Airbox questions...

Whats the difference between a hooked airbox and and open one?
And where does the mille take its air from as std? I`v never actually noticed intakes but the oem airbox is sealed and the intake seems to all come from underneath it? (cant check myself as my bike is 10miles away )
Aaaaand if one fits a hooked/open airbox, what to stop crud being sucked in from under the tank?? As from what I can see only the air coming through this big outlet at the bottom is filtered and the trumpets are left open? errrr am I missing something here? what if you rode through a dust cloud?
Forget all this, I think i`v managed to answer most of it ;)

Your air intakes are directly below the top fairing & feed into the sides of the airbox. Not got one but I believe the hooked airbox is a plate which replaces the airbox & a Pipercross filter goes over the trumpets & is secured to the plate. There is also a small pod filter for the crankcase breather

Yep cheers nick, thats what I figured after trauling through loadsa old threads... lol
Still dont quite see the difference between hooked and open though...
Is your bike all sorted yet??

Lol less in bits than mine at the mo!
Now didnt it get "nicked" no pun intended??
Thought they were writing it off, or am I getting confused with one of the many other Nicks...?

Ah yeah that`d be it...

Anyone know if a hooked airbox plate, mod thing, from an 05 RSV will fit my 02 Haga??? Surely the mounting is the same???

:confused How does that work. are you just sealing the edges of the airbox against the bottom of the tank.

Nick - yeah just been trying to get my head around the different types of mod.
Its seems generally you got open type (hooked/renegade etc) which are just a base plate for your gubbins and a filter directly over your trumpets. Which sounds awesome (apparently) but gets rid of any forced induction and also takes in warm air not just the cool air from the front. This gives more midrange boost.

And theres the seal by the tank type, Like Mak`s (evo/Homer hwe etc). The idea being some way to hold the filter in place, ie cut out everything of the oem lid bar the two strips either side to hold it, or foam ontop of the filter so the tanks holds it etc etc.
Then some sort of seal around the bottom of the airbox that seals to the tank, making the bottom of the tank the airbox lid, increasing airbox volume, while retaining the cold air and forced induction benefits.
This gives a boost on the top end, But not so much roar. And is alot cheaper...

This is all second hand and a summary of all the bloody airbox talk I`v been reading over the last two days! lol.

Mak595 - SO! what do you make of it all? any change in noise from your style? Your tried an open type? any comments on the above?

Does the open airbox really make that much difference to the volume, the airbox is a pretty snug fit to the underside of the tank anyway, from the picture it looks like a standard paper filter, wouldn't it be better just to fit a high flow filter like K&N :confused
Also how good a seal is formed, whats the chances of sucking a load of crap into the engine.

The slightly less reliable seal is one of the possible cons of the evo type. Where as the open renegade style as a directly fitted filter.
And yes usually this type would have a K&N etc to maximise effect. Mak just probably hasnt got round to changing it yet. Apparently I seem to recall, someone sayin the oem box is 800cc and with the tank as the lid its 1400cc...

Wait for Mak or others to say how well it works as I`m not running one yet. Badger seems to estimate about 2-4 hp but says it very noticeable ;)

Mmm sounds interesting, may have a go at that then :thumbup Do you have to do anything with the fueling, does this make it run lean

Again judging from the many many pages i`v read, its ideal, but its seems most dont

The K&N will give very little benefit over the standard filter, it just means you can clean and reuse it, you wont gain anything. Fueling will adjust itself.

Best performance is from an airbox mod and a pre 2001 airboot rubber, PC111 with a custom map (dyno time) and a good exhaust system.

The Evo seal is crap, that is why i used a high density foam that would form to any irregularities on the underside of the tank and give a perfect seal, mine ran for 18k and was faultless, i bet it is still on the bike, i think Supertedlover owns it now.

Have a look here, if you want the pics i can email them to you

Ah badger my man, (only just read your reply by the way)

Thats what I forgot to ask you...

where does one find this "airboot rubber" you speak of? and what does it do??

I reckon I am going to give the door rubber a go first and coat it in lithium grease (maybe Vaseline if I`m feeling gay enough), and I can check that its sealing all the way around by the grease line left on the tank and go from there...

I can vouch for K&N in std airbox doing bugger all. Mine has one and feels strangled still...

well, the K%N actually does something: it filters out the small animals like cats and rats and lets almost all of the dust in! crapy filters they are... Great for track racing though where you don't really care about trashing your engine!
