Winter mods check list please.

It's my next winter mod on the list mate

In theory its only a case of along side the cut out mod supplying the side switch with an ignition feed, which will allow the dash pod light to work but get rid of that bloody cutout.
But every time i wander into the garage i get distracted , im a bit of a goldfish.

My best mod so far is fitting stomp grip to the tank, it made a big differance to me being able to move and control the bike, id def recomend it only cost around £40 and 15min to fit all you need is a hairdryer( the wifes of course :biggrin).

Have you done the headlight wiring mod it stops the dip beam turning off when the main beam is selected this is the link its very well detailed and only takes max 1hr. http://apriliaperformance.myfastforum.org/sutra2356.php.

i fitted stopgrips today too there worth every penny:thumbup

i cut mine slightly as i wanted them to miss the black oe bottom section (im funny like that ) :biggrin

It's amazing how a simple bit of rubbery stuff can transform the connection betwen the rider and motorcycle.

And great to find someone more anul than myself LOL :biggrin

Ooo hadnt thought of them! I can imagine how that must feel. I was impressed when I fitted renthal grips to my RVF the different it made in connection to the bike.
Think they will go on the wish list ;) bit down the line when some track time is booked.

Not sold on the headlight mod! why would you want the low beam to stay on? dont think I`ll add that to me list.
But the sidestand mod will have to be looked into and done I think. Deffo want to keep the light though, just incase!

Right then! Update...
Finally got it in the garage with the plan of doing the wiring mod and getting rid of the brown connector...
Got all the parts laid out and ready and.... Bleeding soldering iron dont work any more! doh!
Changed the fuse in the plug....nope.
Sooo just got everything ready to solder and took stock of the rest of the bike.

original 50amp solenoid still in there, so new one of those due.

Battery is a varta YTX12 BS, so thats gonna be uprgraded too.

Looks as though the ecu has been done (should this have been done as mine has an sbk chip in it??)

Opened the airbox, its got a K&N filter, and I THINK the restricter in the airbox has been removed (will find another pick of that and confirm)

Back to the wiring mod. I`m sure the guy has given me the wrong size wire. No way two of them are going into one ring connector! And each one is twice as fat as the wire on the 30amp fuse blcok they are being wired to...makes no sense! so should I get thinner wire? Get another ring connector so each wire has its own (negative side), or divide the wire evenly at the block connector end (pic to folow what I mean) and just use one + and one - ??
Hmmm

Brilliant thread Steve :thumbup
Now me hybrids finished I need something to do through the winter, once I have the comfort kit sorted gonna work me way through your list :biggrin

Sounds like the wire's too thick, i got both of my wires into a yellow ring connector...

nikfubar - Cheers dude. Hoped it would help people! It was so confusing when I first started looking into it all, as the mods are refered to differently buy different sites etc. So thought it would be handy to have it all in one place ;) I will do a recap as I check stuff off and add other bits, to make it easier for people who just find the thread :)

mak595 - definitely think they are too big ( see pics, ) each one is 3 times the thickness of the the fuse block wire! I dont mind using thicker wire. But it would need and an extra ring for the ngative side or, like I said just use one. and divide it at the connector (see pic) would there be a problem with that?? What do you guys think?

Inside my airbox, bit oily and K&N filter in place, but..

How do you clean a K&N?? it looks abit oil-logged, theres actually a little pool in there...

No restrictor! shame :(

WP_000349.jpg

On to the wires..
The ECU has had the wire cut, but I was wondering where that stands if its running the SBK chip???

WP_000345.jpg

So you can see how thick this wires are (14ga apparently...) compared to the black wire of the 30amp fuseblock, so two of those fat ones are supposed to bottleneck to this....err

WP_000347.jpg

Was thinking of just using one and dividing it at the plug end so each spade gets half like so... anyone see a problem with that?

Thoughts on a post card :D ....

To clean the air filter K&N do a cleaning kit which is a pump spray bottle of cleaning fluid & a spray on filter oil. You spray on cleaner leave for 10 minutes then wash off under the tap. When filter is dry spray on oil. :thumbup

Ah nice one nick cheers :thumbup

dont suppose you have this kit laying around.......? :devious

I`m cheap ya see :D

Howz your bike by the way? got it back yet?

I`v got a spare front fairing. Wel actually I have a whole spare set, inc tank lol. What year is yours to have a shiney black tank??

Mine was the very last of the 03 models registered in 04 it's got shiney top fairing, tank & bits of the side fairing.

Looks smart bud :D
Still prefer the 02 tail light mind :p
My mate is a sprayer and says he can clearcoat my whole bike stickers and all for 200quid, so it`l be the same but shiney, but undecided.

Yeah that's all aprilia did to my model is clearcoat, as the shiney bits have the decals under the laquer & the matt bits, the decals are on top. :roll

Your only down the road mate, we shall have to meet up!
(so we dont jack the thread totally into a paint finishing thread :D )
I`m off to bed, more updates tomorrow! ;)

Hey nick.
You see the last pictures I posted? Yeah bout at that point still!
Problem is my car is sorned at the mo, as things abit tight, and I`m insured on the GF`s car. but shes been a busy little bee and its never free! meaning I cant get to my mums garage where the bike is to finish it!
HOPING to get there tomorrow as I have just borrowed......my push bike (harsh times...) Meaning I will be able to get there even if it does take me an hour!

You got any thoughts on the splitting the wire idea I mention with the last pics??

No, can't see why splitting the wire would be a problem, the only thing I would do is to heat shrink it like this

Airbox questions...

Whats the difference between a hooked airbox and and open one?
And where does the mille take its air from as std? I`v never actually noticed intakes but the oem airbox is sealed and the intake seems to all come from underneath it? (cant check myself as my bike is 10miles away )
Aaaaand if one fits a hooked/open airbox, what to stop crud being sucked in from under the tank?? As from what I can see only the air coming through this big outlet at the bottom is filtered and the trumpets are left open? errrr am I missing something here? what if you rode through a dust cloud?
