Reading these tales of woe make me wonder if I've just been lucky..Had mine 2 years exactly and have clocked 16,000 miles...Only niggle the back brake, and a speedo sensor after being in this summers floods..

Compares well with my R1 that ate it's gearbox and Krapasaki which blew its head gasket, both at lower mileage..

fookin italian peice of ***** has cost me a fortune and its going to someone whos got more money than sense
lucky bast***s will get it sorted though

Sounds like your having the same snags that i had with mine, i changed the ecu after a bit of triall an error and its been fine ever since. i got mine for £60 delivered of ebay, they had a few chipped one's there too.
hope it helps

wiring mod is now done and with a fully charged battery I now get 13.7v against 13.3 at tick over

Its not setting the world alight but im sure every little bit helps

Agreat1 you've certainly had a mare with your bike and it's a shame you've decided to sell it as you've spent so much time and money on trying to sort it. I do feel for you fella as these are great bikes but it looks like you have a rogue bike there as they are pretty damn reliable if looked after correctly from new. These bike need a little pampering and it's so important when buying second hand to make sure the bike has been well looked after and correctly maintained from new.

There seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment where people are buying older second hand RSV and RSVR's and having major problems with sprag clutches and poor starting. These two things are linked and it all stems from just a few minor improvements that can easily be remeded but the damage may have already been done.

I'm on my 3rd RSVR and covered over 36000 miles on these bikes and only ever had a headlamp bulb, a fork seal and a battery go on me ( touch wood ). My prevous R1 had gearbox issues which were fixed under warranty and before that my fireblade had to have new clocks , temp sensor and replacement discs again all under warranty so it appears that problems are not just linked to Aprilia.

Good luck in whatever you go for fella :thumbup

it will cost me about £440 parts and £100 labour

money spent so far
£880 new wheels as had bent rim on front (didnt notice when i bought it)
£40 new battery
£30 new solenoid
£80 new fuel pump assembly
£300 full service (including shims)
£220 new tyres (dunlops and theyre *****)
£300 investigating starting problems with no real result
£500 Akra exhausts
£150 rear brake mod and servicea nd its still pants
£140 new fork seals

So apart from the odd stone chip it will be sorted and in excellent condition - just to get rid of it quickly she'll be up for sale for £4200

£440 parts for a sprag clutch? cost me $500 aus$ for sprag and holder 2years ago
What else are they changing?
And the alternative is known now.
Broke puller? cheap tools I didn't

Bent front wheel? and Fork seal? Did they cheap the forks for straighness?
Sound like a drop or ran into something.
"£300 full service (including shims)" Did you mention the starting problem?

I liked the old Dunlop's But there's been better tyres for a long time now.
Why did you buy them?

after finding the bent front rim, i hda the forks checked for atraightness and they are true

but yes that did cross my mind

my starting problems have been going on for months now and sometimes it seems to be sorted then out of the blue it returns

not blaming the mechanic as i work as an instrument engineer and sometimes you can chase a problem for ever before stumbling accross the problem

This is the best battery as it gives more cranking power

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Top-quality-Varta-YTZ14S-BS-motorcycle-battery_W0QQitemZ290260663744QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item290260663744&_trkparms=72%3A12|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Size wise it fitted straight into my 2001R, so should do the same on the edwards, i had to modify the 04 and 06 model slightly and relocate the tilt switch, not a big job though.

good luck

Badger are you sure this is the correct battery? It arrived today and it is a lot smaller than the ytx14- bs that I have fitted and is only rated for 11A not 14 like the one I had.

actually it probably is the right one as it has mega cca compaired to the ytx one.
