it is a ytx14bs I changed from a 12 to help with this problem around march

If you need any more CCAz than what the YTX14BS (these crank great) can deliver..me thinks you got more than battery problems ol mate. :dunno

You can alway fit a YTZ14SBS battery. This gives much more cold start cranking amps compared to a YTX14BS. Might be worth a shout if you're still having starting probs. I believe you need to do a small mod to make it fit correctly.

Badger i think knows more on this.

That might be a good idea.

Is it anything to do with the bike being an edwards and maybe its got higher compression or something else that these bikes have?

bit of an update. No scum bags pinched it :( so I had a look at it. The negative lead was working loose tightened it up and the bike fired up straight away.

Knocked it off and fired it up again and the battery had lost a lot of its oomph and wouldn't start it.

So i'm not really sure if I fixed it. The problem is if it doesn't start 1st prod their isn't enought juice in the battery to get it going.]

I left it off the optimate last night and have just started it with my multimeter taking readings.

It was 12.6 volts before turning the ignition on the battery dropped to 11.8 volts

1st go at starting dropped the battery down to 10v whilst cranking, It didn't start.

Battery recovered with the ignition off to 12.4 volts had another prod at the starter and it dropped to 9 volts whilst cranking

Knocked the ignition off and the battery recovered to 12.2 volts. The battery dropped to 8 volts just as the bike fired but didn't reset the clocks.
The bike then charged at 13.3 volts.

It must be a poor battery, even though its only a few months old. I'll change the starter relay too whilst im at it and give all conections a good clean.

Thanks for all your help

Is 13.3volt with a multimeter across the battery or the voltage reading in the dash?
A heavily drained battery should/will charge at or near 14volts with the engine running.

check the brown connector

i have just read that a ytx14bs doesn't fit an 04 onwards bike

is this true?

as i'd love to upgrade

the X? or the Z mate...the YTX fits in the 02 with room to spare :dunno
Surely the 04 seat is not that low in the subframe? The YTX 14 is 15mm taller than the 12, all other dimensions are the same

yeah i dont think it will fit in then as the level/tip over sensor will not secure into position holding the battery down
i wonder why that is?
why would they make it so that the battery wouldn't fit a newer model

buggered if i know matey...trying to piss you orf i guess :nana

Have you tried changing the spark plug leads/plugs?

Also name the dealers who cannot fix it!
Someone else may have more info on the dealer............

First thing I did. Checked the plugs to make sure both plugs were working. One wasn't so I checked both plugs in the working cylinderto make sure both plugs were ok. I did the same with the leads to count them out too. This led me back to the coil pack. Following the diagrams found that the fuel relay must be working because the bike would fire up on one.

J&L ordered a new set of coils. They fitted them and it didn't work. They didn't know how to use thier diagnostics machine and was blaming the fuel injection system as it was showing open loop (as it does when the engine is not running and you are on Map 2). They also got scared by the powercommander as 4 plug and play connectors was too much for them to understand. They lied on the Warranty claim saying the bike was fixed otherwise they would get charged for the coil pack they thought wasn't at fault.

I then took it to another Aprilia dealer who diagnosed the problem but is struggling with Aprilia to accept the warranty claim.

Sorry for Hi Jacking the topic but I guess it still relates to the title "piece of **** Italian *****". lol

Gaz, i will do a post later on the battery size and fitment, also the brown connector is better hardwired, 13.8 to 14 volt should be the charging voltage

No It's more relevant to shoddy bike dealers or service.

I managaed to get one to fit in mine. You ust have to relocate the tilt switch and a bit of dremmel work,

Fits a treat,

This is the best battery as it gives more cranking power

Size wise it fitted straight into my 2001R, so should do the same on the edwards, i had to modify the 04 and 06 model slightly and relocate the tilt switch, not a big job though.

The brown connector at the rectifier is suspect, i removed mine and hardwired it as the block connector corrodes and causes resistance which in turn can feck the stator, have a good read here for info on it

I would also throw away the aprilia solenoid switch and replace with the yamaha one.

Check and make sure other connections are clean and good, it sounds to me like your battery is not good mind, good luck

Make sure you charge the battery FULLY before you fit it otherwise its probably doomed after about 12 months.

Optimate is NOT a charger. Its a top ups.

I am away from my bike for a week and I have left it OFF my optimate to check how good that 'new' battery is that I took off my Tuono project.

I must admit my first TL had a prob, and on some advice at a Battery store I bought a big amp thing costing me £130...:dowhat It worked. In fact I kept it, that battery lasted four years on three differant machines, when I got back from Australia after 18 months it fired my TL up on the second attempt!!!!
I sold the battery with the bike and its still going strong.

I few more pence makes makes a lot more sense....:nana

i've bought the battery badger recomends (infact the one in his link!)
Starter solenoid will be on order shortly and then im going to check all the cables

the wiring mod looks very simple badger, but if it works......

will be carrying that out very shortly

we shouldn't have to re-wire this and uprate that and change this etc
we pay a lot of dollar for something that should work

Mine's going - mind made up as soon as its out of the garage with brand new sprag clutch its up for sale

yeah i know i've spent nearly 2 grand on this bike putting it right, but its proper skint me - and i cannot afford it anymore - well sick

watch out for it if you like - when its sorted it'll be fleabay for 4 grand
