Do ktm shims fit?

you inbox is full...you need to delete some messages mate

01827 285500 thats the workshop not sure if he works at wekends though but give it a go..

p.s. do you need a workshop manual?

I've got a haynes one, yeah that would be handy cheers mate.. I have an engine manual but its more about taking it apart and putting it all back together.

Seems like I do need to lock the engine in place with the special tool, or make one as when I try to remove the hex bolts holding on the cam gears it turns the engine over.. I also tried to remove the cam chain tensioner from the rear cylinder and the hex is rounded :dunno not much room to get to it either without removing what looks to be a water hose..

I'll call Griff now.. Would be nice to do it myself as it will be satisfying. Spoke to my local Aprilia dealer who said they have to order shims in from Italy and advised that they couldn't promise how long it would take "how long is a piece of string" lol They did refer me to RSV.NET though..

Anyone sell this in the UK?

I don't fancy sticking it in 6th and holding the brake on..

Ive done did it..

Managed to get the cams out of the rear.. decided to do the rear first then I will do the front once the rear is all shimmed out :devious

I made my own engine lock tool, if anyone wants me to make one for them let me know..

Needs trimming..

Well first off I marked all the gears up.

Held the chain up and removed one cam gear, the chain and gear for the rhs as looking at the bike is now suspended in the air to prevent it slipping a tooth down below.. I was cautious removing the exhaust balance gear and made sure it was marked up with the gear which went over the lhs cam gear.

Off the cam cover comes, once the cam gears were moved out the way I could get to 2 bolts holding in the exhaust balance cam.. which were removed from the 2 bottom holes in the photo above..

I have used a spreadsheet found on another site but I cant make sense of it? I can see what shim it says I need but don't understand what the clearance becomes?

you wont need a kit just the shims (max 8) needed.
As you will know once they are all measured you may be able to swap them about meaning you need to order only a few.
the spreadsheet you show gives new clearance (clearance becomes value) as (shim thickness + Required clearance gap) i.e. shim of 2.75mm and gap spec of min 0.12mm would be clearance of 2.87mm

I double checked the calculations and it worked out right :doug

rearworkingoutleftintake_zpsdd50dea4.png

a=(b - c) d
a= required shim thickness
b= measured clearance
c= specified valve clearance
d= existing shim thickness

Much more complicated than doing them on my blade..

Was thinking it would be handy to have a kit as I wont be opening up the front until the back has been done.. I'm going to change them all to get them in the middle of where they should be. Time for some :cheers

Will have to meet up once its back together..

Sweet cheers for the links mate, I called him earlier today and he did have some in stock but I didn't know the sizes or diameter then :eek:ops

Will drop by his shop Monday after work. Going to be a satisfying job once done.. then onto plugs and oil.

No worries about the spare shims you have been a great help.

You decided to dive in then :biggrin As you've proberbly realised it's easy to make the crank holding tool & yes you can only do one cylinder at a time, don't be tempted to remove that bolt untill it's all back together.
There not much of an Aprilia dealership if they don't keep shims, don't they do any servicing :dunno when I did mine the dealership just let me exchange my shims for ones of the correct size from there selection they keep for servicing.

I found that I had to remove that coolant hose & the round coolant junction "can" to get at the adjusters.

HAHA Yup... Thought it was a bid of an odd response from a dealership.. It does make you wonder if the expensive valve clearance service gets done the majority of the time..

Good stuff, got to be done mate, didn't want to risk it.. spent a lot of hard earned and its a beautiful machine. :cheers

Cheers. Not looking forward to doing the front, it should be more straight forward as no extra gears but is much harder to get to. If only I could buy shims on a Sunday..

Rear cylinder done! Intakes are at 0.15 and exhausts are 0.25.. and the engine still turns over :)

Managed to get the shims at a very good price of £2.75 each!

I'm going to remove the front shims tonight if I can get my hands to all the bolts!
