After 10 weeks off the road due to an engine failure i still have not got my Tuono back and am now totally fed up with the whole thing.

It's all been agreed as warranty work and my understanding is that the bike is back together and running but a sensor is showing an error so they wont let the bike out til that has been solved.

I have never been so exasperated with a company before. Neither Aprilia nor the dealer concerned seem particularly fussed about it and i am now very close to shaming and naming if the bike is not back this weekend as the dealer promised.

Every update i have had has been because i have had to ring or go in, not one single piece of information has been received by me without me chasing it.

Try talking to Amauri on the AF1 site. The man is a ******' GENIUS!! He may be able to help. And make a HUGE pain in the *** of yourself at the current dealer. In a nice way. ALWAYS smile, ALWAYS write down who you talked to and what they said. NEVER lose your temper. A smiling customer that doesn't back off is THE scariest person to a dealer.

That is just awesome advice that Shovelhead. I totally agree with it. Once upon a time in a previous job I worked on a helpdesk and was much more helpful to people who were nicer to me who explained their problem than to people who shouted. There was some top tips on yahoo about this the other day and one of the best ones they gave was get the name of the manager at the shop and write him a letter (not an e-mail) and send it via recorded delivery so they have to sign for it. People are much more likey to respond to a well written letter than an e-mail which they can say they haven't received.

Big end bearing let go and it's not uncommon from what i can work out. It's had a complete rebuild.

AF1Windy had this happen to his bike, but he was only off the road for a couple of months, and that included recovering the bike from France.
It's not a common fault - but the newer (08 on) engines need a bit more TLC when they are run in. Bombadier Rotax who build them changed the spec' on the cranks and it's not been an unmitigated success.

It's the third bike this dealer has repaired with the same problem in two years.

Just spoken to the dealer and they are fitting a new throttle cam position sensor this morning to hopefully get the bike running smoothly.

That new Speed Triple is looking decidely inviting.

I've ridden the Triple. I was soooooo happy to climb back on a real bike after the demo... Riding pos killed my arm, anaemic compared to the T, and the Arrow cans they had on it had a loud spot that loosened one of my fillings whilst I was riding. Not a favourable ride in the least. To top it off, the Street handles better and was wayyyy more fun.

I feel your pain...

You haven't named your dealer....it would be good to build a database of good and bad dealer service...

As for Aprilia (the Company) they suck chunks when it comes to customer after sales & care...personally, when I had a problem, I got the impression that once they'd sold you the machine, and banked the cash, they were happy to see the back of you...Sad really...because they could generate so much more profit if they were a little more serious about developing good customer relations...

But it all starts with the DEALER...get a good one (Southern Cross, Griff etc) and you're sorted...they understand the importance of keeping you happy....get an indifferent one....and you can be left high & dry for months...

I hope you get it resolved before too long...

I wanted Griff to do the work but he isn't able to do warranty work. I have no doubt that had he had the bike i would have had it back weeks ago.

I get the impression that Aprilia's indifference feeds down to the dealers who pass that couldn't-give-a-**** attitude on to the customers.

I'll decide whether to name and shame when this whole sorry saga is finished and how both Aprilia and the dealer try and win back my confidence in the products they sell.

****** **** innit. We bought a new car and it got a warranty recall for a new thermostat. 5, I said 5 ****** times it went back because they kept ****** it up. They didn't give a **** till I asked them for thier parent companies address. When it finally got sorted it had been valeted in and out and 20 quid of petrol put in.

Don't let this ****** experience sour your Aprillia ownership too much...they are awesome bikes...far more involving than the Trips imho...

Good luck...keep the faith....but do keep on top of that dealer.... (could they be in Staffs by any chance...)

Nah. Once it's back you'll fall in love all over again. You need to run the fecker in for about 1500km - NOT the 1000 before the first service. Windy blew his up doing about 160mph through France at about 1400 km or so, I ran mine in a bit more carefully and it's fine at 5k. You are right there have been a few failures, but once the engine gets bedded in propoerly they are fine. It's all to do with a non counterbored oil passage in the main journal apparantly. That and a different hardening process that sees the clearance between bearing and crank get a wee bit tight on some engines.

I agree with Tifa though, it's more to do with the dealer IMHO decent dealers seem to manage to get stuff turned around, whilst others don't give a ****.

Spoke to the dealer this morning who promised he would ring back later today.

By 5pm i have heard nowt so i ring up to be told he is with a customer and will ring back in 5 minutes.

Did he ring back? Did he ****!

I have the name and address of the head honcho of Aprilia UK and a letter is going off tonight with a copy sent to the dealer.

TBh i'm not sure i want the bike anymore if i am going to have problems like this if something goes wrong.

I hate this sort of crap....when you have 5 minutes, email the dealer and sent them a link to this thread....also, if you can get it, get the addies of the ceo, owner, general manager...and copy them in too...
Fuckers need stringing up by the bollocks

Just had a phonecall to say the bike is running but only in safe mode.

The error code is for the throttle position sensor but they have changed that and it still shows a error. They are now taking bits off the demo bike in the shop to see if any of that bike's sensors makes a difference. The ECU is next!

Oh for fuxsake. I ran into difficulties with my stator, then when the ***** finally got it warranteed they put it back together so that it was pissing oil out the right side front. Nearly highsided into a gravel truck when a hard right turn hit all the ******* oil sprayed on the rear tire. The dealer shrugged and said oh well.
Where is the ******* liability??!!!

AND they still are holding monies of mine that were for a battery that was later warranteed as well. They were payed TWICE for that battery.

****.

I STILL love the **** out of my T though and wouldn't trade it for nowt.

I've been for a test ride on a 2007 Speed Triple this afternoon. It's a stonking bike. The engine is every bit as good the Tuono's if not better. Power and torque everywhere. It will run down to 30mph in top gear and still stomp away.

Downsides are the suspension just isn't Ohlins-good and the flyscreen is nowhere near as effective as the Tuono's.

I'll see how i feel about the Tuono when/if i get it back.

After having to chase again, they now say they got the bike to run properly by changing the ECU from their demo bike but since the bike is a Factory and the demo bike is a R model they have sent for a new ECU as it still showed an error code even though it ran OK.

Does anyone know if the ECU's are different or not?

At this rate i will be lucky to see the bike by Xmas.
