WATT Did I Buy?

Hello, I'm a new owner of a 2009 twin? I don't know what I bought. But, today as I was still breaking in the engine as per owner's manual, I was stopped at a light, someone rolled down the window and said; "Nice bike." I gave him the thumbs up and said thank you. See, it called out to me. It was on the showroom floor for a long time. It was an eyesore to some. She was sitting in the front window. It was as if I were walking in the red light district she sat. I have to confess, we are having an affair and I haven't told the other bike why it hasn't been ridden so much lately. Yes, I hit my head a number of times crashing bikes, but it was love at first sight and I'm sticking with that story.

Yes, novice here.
1.What is this called, an R or a Factory? Factory comes with a rear seat cover, the R does not? I have the R model?
2. What is with this popping out the throttle body? Does this have two maps with two different timings? Is one crank short a millimeter or something?
3. How can Aprilia get away with a bike that needs throttle emissions servicing like I have no option for map 2 also? I am handcuffed buy the dealer's flip of a switch?
4. A dealer has me buy the proverbial; short of buying a 5 thousand dollar Axone with sniffer ports to dial in the emissions, plus switch back an forth from race to street? That is Crazy!
5. No, you cannot have my Aprilia back. It's too nice a bike.
6. Anyone have a stumble at 3 to 4 thousand rpm?
7. Yes, I love the twitchy throttle. If you are not on point, what was the point of buying this little ripper.
8. Transmission has to be planted well, correct? Miss shifts or am I just a sloppy shifter?
9. She has so much gear, I run in 4th and it purrs like a kitten... Sans the stumble.
10. I'm following book break-in and 6 thousand rpm is pretty high, but I went there the first time and saw the light come on as I shifted up to 6K.

Do I have a fever or is that how being love struck is?

you have the R

yes 2 maps...map1 &map2

map 2 will give you better response if you have unrestricted cans (ackras etc)

nope...that's just business I'm afraid
5. No, you cannot have my Aprilia back. It's too nice a bike.
good call
6. Anyone have a stumble at 3 to 4 thousand rpm?
never noticed
7. Yes, I love the twitchy throttle. If you are not on point, what was the point of buying this little ripper.
indeed
8. Transmission has to be planted well, correct? Miss shifts or am I just a sloppy shifter?
requires firm left foot
9. She has so much gear, I run in 4th and it purrs like a kitten... Sans the stumble.
you need to swap out the primary gear to a 15T (ideal world = 15T-42T or 15T-43T)
10. I'm following book break-in and 6 thousand rpm is pretty high, but I went there the first time and saw the light come on as I shifted up to 6K.
you can adjust the point at which the red (shift light) comes on through the l/h bar button....your choice
Do I have a fever or is that how being love struck is?
probably both

welcome btw...enjoy your bike.

Do u know what I've noticed a bit of a flat spot on mine about 4-5k with the throttle cracked on open on full. Still its a fecking quick bike.

is it just me but i've never seen an orange and brown tuono? thats a strange looking colour scheme

Awright 2K min...welcome intae the brethern of the converted (and afflicted)

Everything u have described is typical of the Tuono.

While the standard bikes are immense anyway, a couple o "must do" mods (IMHO)are:
1. 15/42 sprockets, will sort oot that low rpm stutterin at low speeds. Really smooth the whole thing out.
2. Some decent cans and Map 2 set up. Its not that painful to get done and only needs to be done the once.

Then simply git yer arse oot on it and ride the bugger an get the miles on it so ye can get that needle roond tae the 9000rpm mark......

....then ye will soon ken all aboot how these bikes pull and why we awe luv them! :whoop

hey 2K min....jist had a thought....u say its a 2009 bike.....u bought this brand new? Its 2011 the noo, must hae been sittin there for a while.

and wheres your mirrors?

Tifa, Appreciate the response as with the others giving comment. Oh, I about love that gear box and having 4th gear run this smooth, then I have two more gears remaining. I think I'll pass on the sprocket change. Yes, I imagine it is the garage with the soft light; it sure amasses some color changes.

I've looked at most of your bikes to see the product line evolve up to this last year of the Tuono twin? In 2010, it was replaced with the V-4? Then a v-4 owner complained it was as powerful as his Factory twin? I would assume the Factory twin has more HP mapping than the R twin? I'm still catching up on the product.

About this map 2, I caught one post where map 2 was in play. He said his friends could smell a raw gas odor out of the exhaust. Is that the case? Then I'll pass, thanks. I like running lean. I've tried to tune the pop out, but not that stumble. I think it needs that stagger on the one cylinder, Yes? I see the tach is programmed to swing at 6K for break-in. I did play with this setting and now that I have a few more miles on my 3rd time out, I noticed I can move 100 rpm increments up from the break-in limit of 6k rpm. I'm like a kid with a new toy. This bike is way smart with a lot more CAN than I am used to. I'm learning something new, so bare with me. So yesterday I took it upon myself to run up to redline (6.1K) in 2 gears and stopped. I saw the red shift light and I am learning I have a tiny computer here with a lot of features. It also told me I had a turn signal out. As for the mirrors, It was never PDI'd. I told them if they want to sell it to me, it's gotta roll out dry.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z36dJrnZWjY I have a few of my own ways of setup out of the crate. I had to bring the bars back and the levers to my comfort zone. I set the front wheel up a certain way so I am sure there is no bind. Yes, I am somewhat anal with my bikes. I look at it as a hand built with the parts fitting together better, or what I think might be better? I don't know, I'm still learning. I kind of line up the axle and brake calipers to the forks. Everything is loose so I spin the wheel and punch the brakes a few times. I figure this is the static setting for these parts. I then tighten everything back up. I really don't know if it works or not, but there is no buzz in my bars. My front wheel rolls free after the first ride for break-in. The brakes do not make a peep.

One more time. It fits me like a glove and I'm obese. It handles like a dream, and I'm old. I lost the pop at idle and I'm smiling about all this commotion about this dreamboat being a sitter for so long. And when I take off, the front end starts to dance ever so little off the ground. I made a great move on a great bike.

Hey Rico, I can read that without the translator :thumbup

Welcome mate, enjoy.

jist watched that clip again.....whit the **** is goan oan there......way too much touchy feely:crazy

No - the Factory and R models have identical engines, the difference is in the suspension, and of course Factory owners are cooler people. :)

The bike is sold running on map 1 with over tall gearing and a restricted inlet to pass emission laws. V Twin engines LIKE to run really rich and the Tuono is no exception. Once you have it run in, which is 1500km [900 miles] get it swapped over onto map 2 which will isolate the o2 sensors and allow the engine to run properly. The stumble you are experiencing is because the fueling is too lean on small throttle openings at low revs. In order to get rid of this drop the overall gearing by fitting the 15t sprocket (that should be under the rear seat) as others mentioned go 42 on the rear as well, or go 16/44 it's pretty similar and you will get the bike to how it is actually intended - pre-emission laws.

Dropping the gearing makes fook all difference to fuel economy but does reduce your Vmax to only 160mph and means that at 30mph in third gear you will be at about 3k rpm, where it will run without hunting/surging - if it's on map 2.

If you doubt what I am saying, go to ApriliaForum and ask there, you will be told the same thing by people who have a huge depth of knowledge on these bikes and engines.

Glad you like it - but that little Sachs shock on the back isn't going to be so good once you get really moving, it's junk. Get the engine/gearing sorted, that wheel will soar over the tarmac.

Don't get too carried away with the dash, our resident dash expert Tifa will tell you it has it's own little collection of idiosyncracies.

and it doesn't have a gear indicator - whatever anyone tells you. :lol

WTF is that video about .... I thought race prepping a bike involved alot of money and technical know how , i was wrong .... all you need to do is finger your exhaust , touch it with a file and do a finger mouse impression on the brake lever , im off to prep mine !
