Metal shard in Tire

I just pulled out a small metal shard that was about 4-5 millimeters deep out of my front tire/tyre :). How deep is the tread on the Pirelli Corsa's? They only have 1k miles on them so they should be thick enough to handle the "puncture" but I'm just wondering as I can't find my plugs and need to prepare for the worst. The puncture isn't even big enough from a width perspective for a typical plug. Am I worrying for nothing (not that I shouldn't get a new repair kit anyway) , or is there something other than a plug that I should be getting?

Mucker,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,whit price is yer life worth.

Yer shout.

Well by my calculations roughly 6 trillion green backs. That aside, are you saying get a kit (which I'm ordering right now) or get/git a new tiyre??? :dunno

Hard to say without pics but then again I would buy a new tire. U'll ride with the confidence that u did the right thing!

It's a five week old tire. Hate to drop $350-400 unless necessary. In the absence of a pic, picture something the thickness of a prong on a dinner fork and about 4 mm long. The puncture was top an mm or two deeper then the rain groove.

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago.

Almost new back tyre picked up a very thin nail and had a very slow puncture.

I decided to get it repaired at my local place I get it serviced.

It was done properly, using a plug with a big mushroom end on the inside that was glued in.

But to carry out the repair, they had to make the hole bigger to get the plug through the tyre .

Anyway, all was good for many miles, the tyre was getting worn to the point I was thinking about a replacement.

I was heading home one night, in the fast lane of a dual carriage way.

The bike felt really strange, like you know there is a problem, I pulled into the slow lane as fast as I could.

By the time I had stopped, the back tyre was completely flat.

The plug had come off inside my tyre, leaving a big hole for the air to get out very quickly.

I now keep the plug as a key ring to remind me not to do it again.

As Aldo says, it's your call.

That's my issue with plugging: making the whole bigger. It sounds as though you were better off with the slow leak.
If I don't loose pressure in the next couple of days, I'll assume the puncture is not deep enough. If it does I'll guess I'll get a new one ... ugh...

I would plug it or get a new tyre....I've had trees plugged before and they were fine, although that was on a Divvy which is much slower.

New tyre. I'd plug a car tyre but not a bike tyre. It's **** luck, but not a waste of money.

Here's the culprit and the hole is the wet spot in between the outer and center grooves. No water bubbles so I suppose that's good.

New Tyre.

Made the mistake of having a repair on a corsa 3 on me T (i got a puncture within 100miles of fitting it). It didnt blow out or anything but it bugged me to the point of changing it anyway...

It's that small hole where you see the water stain. So I guess technically it's not a puncture as I don't see any bubbles when I pour soupy water on it and I haven't seemed to loose pressure in the last 24 hrs.

Ive got a similar piece of metal in the rear tire , it aint leaking so its staying in there and its in the centre of the tire so its thick at that point and its been in there for about 1000 miles ....

in that case no puncture :thumbup you need to purchase one of these :lol

Shouldn't that be everyone's travel mug? :)

I was going to leave it in too but a little piece was sticking out and I didn't want it to go in any deeper... of course, that's what she said...:lol
If you look at my hole- the tires- it's very near center as well. I think the treds a quarter inch there.

When a modern tyre is worn down to legal limit, it's surprising / shocking how thin and pliable they are.

Most people take a bike or wheel into a garage and come out with a tyre fitted now and don't realise how they have changed over the years.

so this thread is devoted to your non puncture !!!!!

Well, in fairness the thread did read "metal shard in tire." What I was trying to get at is how much rubber do we have to deal with in determining if we may either have a very slight leak or are risking a future leak, but I should not have used the word "puncture." Perhaps "insertion?" :)

I'm sorry I mislead you. I never meant to hurt anyone. I'll do whatever I can to regain your collective trust and repair the damage I've done to our relationship. Take me back? Please? :lol
