Yet another hard starting thread. Grit your teeth

Cheers for that, I don't have the no.s for the bat. infront of me at the moment but i'll post them when I can. I have an optimate but its not that convenient without a garage. Plus it bugs me that its a requirement, its like needing dialysis. I need to ba able to rely on my T!

I posted a link the other day to a solar one mate. £15 or so and works brilliantly

I think it bugs everyone mate, not just you. Sadly this is the one major flaw in the Tuono.
 
Yeah i know, if I go through the list and thats just the way it is fair enough. But I need to give it a shot or I'll go nuts. The solar panel sounds great but we don't get a whole lot of sunshine in Dublin :cool

Doesn't require sunshine mate, just daytime.
 
Duckfoot - from reading the thread it looks like you are talking about replacing the starter relay (yamaha part) but are calling it the rectifier. From what I have learned (the hard way!) the rectifier is ususlly fine, just the wire connectors (brown and white) plugging it into the wiring are dodgy. Solder those bugggers solid. Don't replace the rectifier unless it has bad readings. Don't trust the onboard (dash) voltmeter either.

The starter relay helps start the bike (more current available to the twin sparkies) and stops the excessive cranking which drains a battery very quickly. !00A rather than stock 50A Aprilia part - simple swat out job so definitely do that.

A battery can be fully discharged about 4-5 times before it starts to die... unless it is a deep cycle as in marine battery.

I put is a 14Ah jobbie as I could just get it under the seat, but after the mods as above no more starting woes.

Just make sure you dont touch the throttle on startup unless you want a shredded sprag (starter) clutch they are $$$$$$$$$.

I put is a wee switch so the bike starts with the headlights off as well - less current drain helps the motor fire quickly.

We should put together a deffinitive guide to all this bollix. Symptoms=what problem, wiring guides, what parts from what bikes are compatible, part no and where to get em. Get all the info in one thread, what do you think? :dunno
 
Just a quick update on an old thread. I gave up on the bike before christmas after it let me down again in a pinch. I waited untill i had all my bits together and did it all in one go. So......... Soldered around the rectifier's brown connector, 4x spark plugs, R1 starter selonoid and a military grade battery. The result? Started first time without even a cough, even after being outside in the freezing cold for over 2 weeks with out being run. Well happy :)
As far as the charging goes I'll just have to see when the roads de-ice. But that should be it. makes a big difference at the back of my mind to be able to rely on my T again.

I'll have a go at getting a comprehensive guide to the starting/charging problem with the links and parts when i get a chance.
 
From all the diffrent links on various forums for the same selonoid the consensus was it was from an R1. Straight swap, pulled it loose, disconected a clip, unscrewed the battery connectors and reconected the new ones. Done.

It is nice to be able to rely on the old beast again - I know that feeling! I'm still not sure which mod was the clincher - but having done it all mine has been right as rain for over 6 months now.
