Winter, starting bike every 2 weeks. BAD - GOOD ??

mc, a counae agree more and if a wisnae such a lazy **** a'd do something aboot it.

Ajist thought aboot i and with the fan running it wid only cool the fluid in the radiator, not really cooling the engine.

Hmm"¦"¦the cold starting every coupla weeks thing"¦. A few years back before I had a shed I kept my bikes outside in the back garden under a waterproof cover and over winter would start the bike every week or so"¦"¦..one of my ZRX's went in for a service and the mech phoned me up and said my cams were badly pitted and scored"¦"¦.asked him why that would be and he asked if I started it over the winter while on the stand without actually giving it a run"¦"¦he reckoned thats what caused it. He reckoned wtith the bike leaning on the stand, the oil not getting to the upper right hand side of the engine (was the right hand side of both cams that was marked) coupled wih condensation in the oil (caused by engine not gettin up to operating temperature and then cooling down) and no load on engine either"¦"¦..was a costly repair, two cams from a binned nearly new ZRX from a breakers"¦"¦.not cheap!! I dont start my bike over winter now although its now in a watertight heated shed. Dunno if the mech was talkin **** or what but what he said kinda stood to reason but what i would like to know is what damage could occur just bein left unused for months"¦"¦bikes stored under a cover in heated shed so shouldnt be too bad eh???

Bike shops have bikes in for months over the winter and they don't start them up every 2 weeks, at least the ones I know don't. They are inside tho' so may make a difference. As ive; said before I never bother starting mine, had many over 35+ yrs, some of which have stood outside under a cover and all been fine.

Personally ... I think if the bike cannot be ridden it should be resting in a well ventillated place ... wheels off the ground (Abba) optimate plugged in ... dust cover over the top and left alone

What possible purpose is there in starting a freezing cold bike and letting it run?

**** all purpose apart from a quick lazy lob at the sound of the thing

Yeah, I agree, just take it of the battery optimizer for a week every month or 2..

Make sure you stuff some rag up the exhaust pipe to stop any damp air that might be in the shed. Plays havoc with the internals of the cylinders cos 1 valve will always be open
Oh yes, make sure you remove it in the Spring!! Boom Boom

& You might get a frog hibernating in it too.

You lucky, lucky, flash, flash bunch of *******s.....all smug and starting /or not starting your bikes there on a whim...:yes
'shall I'?
'shan't I'?
'is my optimate on'?
'blah blah blah....'

Give a thought for a poor ****** like me....the only way I could get mine going is to pour petrol over it, and sling a lighted match at it......:banghead :bawling

U shouldn't start the zrx on it's side stand for that reason I always used to sit on it or put it on a paddock stand theres another problem with the side stand on the zrx it don't go forward enough there is a fix (to take a millimeter out of the block stop) as for the cams being pitted I know guys who have got 06/07 zrx's and have got little pitting marks on the cams it's all down to build quality and these cams are banged out of the foundry at a great rate these bike are built to a budget, I used to have a mk1 bandit 1200 (1216 big bore) modified engine used to do the same to that never had a moments bother stripped the motor down to fit different cams and the other one's I took out were fine the cams on my zrx (that I have just sold were all fine when I did my shims last yr.) I let my bikes tick over for at least half hour fan has kicked in god know how many times.

see noo heres a funny ****** thing,,, the fechters up on its staunds, an tricled oot its nut,,,,,,n oo a wis talkin tae the duc mechanic wha said its no a guid thing tae let it sit idle fir weeks on end, an its also no a guid thing tae kindle the hoor up an run it up tae temp, wi-oot takin it fir a spin,,,,,so what the **** are ye meant tae dae on black ice an snawy roads,,,,,,,,, maybe hook the **** up tae the treadmill so a can gie it a run in the lab :thumbup.....
I think its a Doocardi cambelt issue mate.
I've heard of a couple of bikes where the belts had gone hard and brittle from lack of use.The belts can either snap or jump a couple of teeth on start up.To be fair,I think its only happened on bikes that have had very little use and the cambelts were old.The scaremongering certainly shook up the Ducati Forums.:crazy

Indeed I was, :yes but the convenient room came beforehand.... ;)

Sorry...back to topic.....you *******s are so lucky that you have a bike that actually runs...my pain in the arse, ******* T is currently doing an 'Arthur Scargill' :crazy
