Hi all, had my RSV about 4 weeks now and there are still a couple of things that really pi$$ me off with it. (apart from the sidestand and the low speed riding experience that is!)
At, shall we say, motorway speeds, I find the wind blast overwhelming to be honest. On my Fireblade, I could have comfortably sat at 100-120 and not been too bothered by wind, but at considerably lower speeds on the RSV, I take a right hammering.
If I do go a bit quicker it feels like I'm being blown off the bike, as if there isn't a fairing fitted! Does a DB help a lot on these?
Also, my bloody mirrors turn themselves inwards at the same time. I have tightened them and thought they were better, but it still happens, what a load of :jack

Hi Jay.
I've got a DB on mine (MotoGP branded but don't know who makes it) and I don't feel like I'm being blown off (save that for when I get home, :devious). I do get a bit of turbulance around the helmet :)devious again) if I sit 'normally' and either sitting up a bit or ducking down behind the screen helps a lot. I'm going to try and find a slightly higher one when funds allow. You might try moving your seating position round a bit to see what works best. A DB wuld probably help as well.

A double bubble screen will help + 16/44 gearing for the low speed riding :thumbup

Regards the mirrors, are the screws too long and they're bottoming out :dunno i dont have a problem with mine :confused What about using a little threadlock incase they're working themselves loose.

Think I may try a DB, the fairing must be narrower than my previous bikes cause none of which have given me this feeling, even flat out on my little NC30!

Mirrors - they fit into the fairing etc OK, I think it must be something about the centreball joint bit, but I tightened them up to what almost felt like they were going to break!
Anyone? :dunno

Done the 16T front for now, might consider doing the rear when the set needs changing. Has made a massive difference for me, just the wrist crippling clutch to sort out at some point.

She's not getting anymore ££££'s chucking at her yet though, in 4 weeks i've sorted her out with a new rear tyre, battery, MOT, seat hump, front disc, front sprocket, exhaust can and tail tidy! OUCH

JayB, have you unbolted the mirrors and checked that they have the appropriate parts? The centreball is actually seperate from the mirror and bolts to the fairing. If the mirrors are moving at speed/wind, then i'd hazard a guess that perhaps there is something missing, or maybe the centreballs are not whole underneath the mirrors. Could be the right parts are there but they've been put back in the wrong order.

No not checked that guys, I just tightened them up when it was getting dark.
They do move easily and it seems like a simple thing that would be stupid to have been overlooked by Aprilia R&D that the mirrors are only good up to a ton!
I did see that the brackets didn't need to come off - after I'd removed the first one.
Where can I find an exploded view so I can remove and check them?

Those mirrors should be OK for as fast as the bike can go.

Right, well that means they've been tampered with for sure! It does really annoy me, quite un-nerving when you are suddenyl unsure of where your 2 following mates have disappeared to!

I will have a check later against the posted diagram link - cheers by the way.

Should I remove the lot with the bolted mounts to make it easier?

My mirrors do the same thing - only the other day I was tootling up my very own private runway :devious making some progress when they folded in on me. Will have to check the mirrors against that diagram in daylight.

Got a double bouble type screen on mine ( fabrini or something like that ) and it works a treat - don't get any neck ache and the fairing does a good job in my opinion :eatcorn

Remove the lower bolt and components, which will release the mirror arm itself, leaving the centreball mount in place, as you'll be able to inspect this once the mirror arms are off. Are you able to post a picture of how they are currently mounted out of interest?

from underneath or above?

Mate, they obviously shouldn't be folding like that. Let's say mine have been tested beyond 150 and they didn't budge, in fact they are difficult to shift when stationary to be honest. My mille just blew over into a fence, luckily only snapped mirror mount!!

Try this link and find the mirrors on there. Think they are in body panels? I've just ordered one mounting kit for £6 something plus £5 postage and it came in two days. Might be worth just starting again for £13 plus postage? Anyway, just taken mine apart again and they should fit together from underneath in this order: Bolt, washer, spring, small round black plastic half moon bit. These fit snuggly from underneath into the black plastic mount with the dome that can be seen from above. Then check the mirror has a thin metal half moon bit inside the housing. This sits between the mirror and the black plastic mount fitted to the fairing. Simply bolt it all together and tighten the bolt right up as far as it will go with the mirror set at the right angle for you. Job done. I will try to take a photo for you and post it up later. Nowt better to do as just had double hernia op Monday, ouch!!

The diagram that Caterpillar posted up is spot on. I've just found the right page on the parts website and it has the prices too, so here you go. http://www.apriliagenuineparts.co.uk/component-rsv-1000-2003-front-body-front-fairing-1616.php

photos to follow. Stick with the Mille mate, they are a right giggle once you get used to 'em. I came from a ZX10 and, whilst that was mental and much quicker, the Mille has bags more character at lower speeds. Couple of quick fixes for you. Wind up the idle speed slightly on the small wheel on the right under the tank. This will improve slow speed hunting round islands/junctions etc and change the gearing to 16/44. Simple to do with a Haynes manual (£20). My mate has a Fabbri DB fitted to his and it is much better than my standard screen. All money though eh!!!

JayB, I've taken some snaps for ya but can't find how to post 'em up. Give me your email address and i'll send 'em

yup, get a decent db that will sort the winblast, oh and tuck in too.
cheers

Got 'em dude, magic!

For some reason I thought I'd tightened them right up last week, but checked again and nutsed them up with a socket and they went quite a bit.

Should help. Best get off round the local track again and see if they stay put.

Now to lose 2 stone and fit a DB to get out of the wind a bit!

Cheers all for help with mirrors, helpful replies as always! :biggrin:thumbup
