We are in a bit of a Jam really.

What option have we left with aprilia when the RSV ( old Bi cyclider) model goes out of production??

RSV4??:dunno

I reckon Aprilia should start designing a new Twin.

I really hope that theyll continue production of the V-twin series, the RSV-4 looks fantastic for racing but I suppose not very practical is it?:dunno

Possibly a Tuono or KTM superduke for me for when my creaking bones cant take it any more :biggrin

i'd imagine they're not going to make a V-twin anymore...at least, not in the sportbike martket...maybe a sport-tourer :O

-:banana

I believe there are going to be more focused versions of the Shiver :dunno
but not heard of an Rsv replacement. I say that with some confidence because Uli at MPL has just been to Aprilia and has a close contact there.

for me this is likely to my last Aprilia unless i buy a newer Rsv when they can't give the 08's away anymore.
I don't want or get particularly excited about the rsv4 nor do i want to spend £15k or £12k on a bike. Something aprilia have made a big boo boo about in the current economic climate. It will not sell in decent numbers. The Rc8 has been a sales flop for Ktm and that is only £10k

If i had to buy a bike now that came close it would be a Ducati 848. More power than the current Rsv and looks nice. extremely overdamped suspension etc for the road but nothing that can't be fixed and can be had for about £8.5k. Only trouble is for us taller riders they are a bit cramped.

LOL. I just logged on to to ask the very same question, although I was thinking of putting a poll on regarding the latest crop of alternative super bikes.

I was gonna ask, "What would you choose (if money wasn't an issue of course) out of an Aprilia RSV4, BMW S1000RR, Ducati 1098, KTM RC8."

I obviously know this is an Aprilia forum so there will probably be a little bias no doubt but I don't think it's that staright forward. Personally I wouldn't rush out and get the RSV4 as it's Aprilia first effort in house at making what is a very complex engine in the V4 and so it remains to be seen if it's reliable. Although if it is reliable it will be an immense machine if it's specs of 180+ bhp and 190ish kgs wet are true and with the potential for traction control sounds a corker.

The BMW is also very interesting as it's a totally unknown qauntity despite it's conventional 4 cylinder engine and may well prove to be the weapon of choice if you just want to go very fast, if the specs are genuine, 190kgs wet and 190bhp at the crank. Those are stunning figures and would possibly move the game on in the same way that the first Fireblade did in 92. In addition the BMW will allegedly have ABS and traction control too. Interesting.
To put it into context the latest Fireblade, and current benchmark is allegedly putting out around 175bhp at the crank and is 199kg's wet.

The Ducati 1098, what can you say, a stunning v-twin in every sense. Tried tested and proven. However hard to ride, set up and get the best out of and also overrated in my opinion. It's almost become a cliche in the same way a red Ferrari is. Undeniably a fantastic bike but it's just a too predictable and obvious choice for me to consider it. I could've got one (just, maybe?) but I didn't, I chose the RSV. The fact that the Ducati is possibly/probably a better bike was irrelevant, for me the Aprilia was more charasmatic and exclusive. (However the 848 is a possibilty simply because it's not a 1098 and is more useable and affordable too.)

Last but not least the KTM, stunning bike (in white) easy to ride, cheaper than any of the others and definitely their equal. However KTM are also unproven with this type of bike and more and more slightly worrying stories of dodgy gearboxes are creeping out as time goes by.

Mmmm decision decisions. Personally I would go for the KTM providing they categorically fix the supposed gearbox issue asap as I think it's the cheapest and most useable, and it's a lovely twin of course! However if Aprilia made a 1150/1200cc RSV that would be a whole different proposition.

Before you ask I've got a day off and it's pissing with rain outside so yes I do have far too much time on my hands and nothing better to do! :grinning

a friend of mine has a 05 mille and a new 1098 and is selling the ape  as he loves the duke, cant fault the looks of the thing, but large price tag

My mate has a 1098R, he has owned it for 6 months of which 4 months its been at the dealers ....last time I dropped him off they had 3 there all with the same problem and a
4th to go and collect !!.
However I do like the 848 especially in white :)

Surely Ducati and KTM arn't going to be the only (sports) v-twin builders left beyond the end of this year ?

Honda need to make a VTR SP3 ...............

gonna get a 2008 RSV factory in 2010, unless something else takes my fancy before that

I rode both of the new dukes albeit only a brief test but i found the 848 the nicer bike to ride over the 1098.

The 1098s looks stunning but again is a bit pricey but i also think it's bordering on too frantic. It lifts the front everywhere if your on it and i think once the giggles from it doing that have subsided it might be a pain.
I personally felt faster on the 848 because i could use all that it had so to speak. Service costs are a worry and the latest bikes have been breaking springs in the gearbox.

The Ktm, not ridden one but i spent 45 mins talking to a guy with a white one at Santander docks waiting to board the ferry.
His comments were essentiually, Dodgy gear change, very snatchy throttle despite dealers fiddling with it and a race can. It had also had several oil leaks which it had gone back for. It will get better though i'm sure with time.
For me the plastic work looks a bit suspect as well. the orange one i saw at the NEC looked like i had done it with a Halfords spray can in my garage.

As i tour a bit i have to have something that's pretty reliable but also not going to make me a cripple after 2 days. Not easy criteria to match in a sports bike.

quite like my rsv ... thanks goes fast enough, handles brilliant

the 1098's going to 1200 next year, but its way too expensive, to low geared in the first 3 ratios, and its tank range would just piss me right off.

personally im going to keep the rsv add some mods, run my zxr over winter and may be pick up a project bike to play with , depending what comes up first at the right price, it maybe a bonneville, commando, le-mans or a Laverda sf but could well be something else

Are Aprilia gonna drop the rsv?.i thought they were going to slot the 1200 lump init :dunno.looks like i might be keeping the old girl a bit longer then

I'll be keeping my 02 R thanks. In the current market, i would only expect to get around £3k for it and even less as a trade in. For me, it's an awsome bike and i've got it set up just how i want it.

As i've said in another post, in my opinion, the RSV4's priced at 12K and 15K are way over priced compared to the RSV4's main market competitors. Aprilia seem to have pitched the bike at the very top end of the market which looking at the specs is probably where it should be. However you could have 2 2008 Fireblades for the price of a V4 Factory so as good as the RSV4's spec list is it's going to take some serious marketing to shift it. My guess is they'll come down to the price of the current RSVR and Factory within 12 months which then would make it an interesting proposition

Same quandry here..I've got bored with the Jap bikes hence trying the prilia, I've had test rides on quite a number of new bikes and the only one that rocked my boat was the 1098 Ducati..But with the way things are there's no way I could buy one, and at the end of the day I still really enjoy my RSV..
With the mileage now on it, I'm gonna lose a fortune on it, so will probably just keep it..

Been thinking about this for a while. I love the twin and in an ideal world I will keep it forever! If I can afford it I will keep the Mille. Deffo gonna get me a Busa at some stage tho:thumbup

Dunno about you but one of the reasons I love Aprilia Vs so much is their bulletproof motors (er, touchwood).
And let's be very honest here, that's because they're Austrian. Italy has built some great engines over the years but I've never yet heard one described as 'bulletproof'.
I love the look of some Dukes but everyone I've ever known or heard about spends most of its time either being repaired or serviced at astronomical cost. I have to say that the RSV4, lush though it is, may well be the same.
Me? I'd rather build up a stable of Aprilia Vs as they get older and more affordable - I'd like a 2No to give me back/neck/shoulders a rest occasionally, another RSV to turn into a track whore, and one more of either to do a bit of a project on.
Before I know it, I'll be like a mate of mine who buys only 1952 Triumph Thunderbirds and any parts for them he sees advertised and does them up to immaculate and completely authentic original condition and then ... just keeps them. God know how many he's got now.
I really wouldn't mind being like that with Aprilia Vs, 'cos when you find something you like ...
