Sorry to hear that,I will of course monitor the situation.

However, given the inherent benefits of the design ,should the worst happen I'm capable of getting it sorted :thumbup

Just wasn't worth the hassle of starting from scratch that's all.

I think there are quite a few well satisified customers out there who would take issue with your general sentiment however.

I hope you can get it sorted to your satisfaction eventually, if not you could always get your local welding specialist to strengthen it surely?

Ian

Why should you sort it out yourself when it was sold to you as a better than original stand :confused its upto the person who made and is selling these to ensure all is well with the product, just a small point tho, make sure they have product liability insurance on them cause if they brake and your bike hits the floor you or your insurance pay, not his

Yes I agree with you however , whenever you buy anything from other than an accredited business concern then surely you must accept some risk of being disapointed .

I have no first hand knowledge of the incident in question obviously, however I am capable of reading tru' all the relevent posts and weighing up if it was worth it to me.

I am a precision engineer with most of my time in the past 20 odd years spent drawing and then programming and making hi tech compts for the defence industry using the latest CAD-CAM & CNC equipment, so I'm not completely clueless.

I could have designed a stand and had it made in house from aircraft spec Titanium, I could also do as some other talented individuals on here do and make parts to sell to fellow forum members.

I decline to do so for the very reasons being put forward here. It's not worth the potential for anything going wrong.

Would I have handled this case differently? possibly, who knows.

I'm happy with the stand I have,it saved me some work, and time I could use for riding the thing :thumbup

Yes the design is spot on............LET DOWN by the quality of the material, thats why he made stands out of Solid metal rather than tube, MY point is, why say " i will send you the new updated version....at NO COST" then ignore email after email when asking have you sent it yet and so on

I took the stand off as soon as i learnt a bike had fallen over cos the stand gave way

Good design.........CRAP WORKMANSHIP and EMPTY promises

Accept your point, can only say that this third gen version seems to be of resonable constructional quality.

Granted, if I were to make one from scratch I would NOT fabricate the female end. I would mill from solid and bore a mounting hole at an angle in the closed end of the U section to accept a turned spigot on the foot, and then weld a good strong reinforcing fillet all round.

May yet come to that, hope I don't have to.

In the meantime at least Gary gave us a choice, and I expect more bikes fell off an Ape stand then had a Bubsy one break.

Just fit a GSXR stand it sticks out further than the Aprilia or modified one and the bike is much more stable. I've got one on mine and its excellent.:inlove

So are the later Bubseywoo stands aany cop. I have one if my garage waiting to fit.

Well as I said before, I would have designed it differently BUT , what I can say is that it fits, does the job it designed to do,changes the balance point so there is more weight on the back wheel and it looks smart as well.

Time will tell I guess, IF the welds are suspect I would expect to feel a difference in the action hopefully before total failure.

Lets just say that I won't be jumping up & down on the seat with the stand down to test it.

Further tip, I relieved the rearmost (upper) stop pad on the stand by a couple of millimetres with an angle grinder just to fine tune the at rest posn.

It now tucks up very close to the belly pan, just personal choice.

As for making any parts myself, from today I'm officially on " gardening leave" for the final 6 weeks of my redundancy notice.

I'm guessing the company wants to do something that would be deemed unexceptable to people working notice. Like imposing new working conditions ,pay cut and overtime working to clear a major backlog of work.

Classic British management, skim the cream then screw the workforce harder.

On the brighter side tho' got all the Cad-Cam software at home,so might get around to using it sometime.

My side stand failed and my bike ended-up on it's side (2002 Mille). I've fitted a Bubseywoo job and it seems rock solid. I'm still of course careful where I park now too. I'd recommend a Bubseywoo as an upgrade for all new owners. I also fitted new springs, nut bolt and washers, just to be safe.

Does anyone know if the GSXR Stand needs to be modded to fit the APE?

I have a K2 Stand in the Garage :biggrin

Yeah, I've got one I bought a year ago and I love it - first thing I changed.
Having said that, I'm a little suspicious that the bike is leaning over a bit more over time and there's quite a lot of play in the top mount even though it's bolted up tight. Think the top mounting fork is bending very slightly.
I gave it a quick inspection last night - after the bleedin' MoT bloke got his mate to cant the bike over on it to check the wheel bearings:jack - and looks fine but I will have it off and give it a proper inspection.
Still one million times better than the original one though.

Could someone tell me please if the GSXR Stand is a straight swap or will it require some sort of modding?

Thanks in advance :thumbup

needs a bit of modding.........i had to cut the foot off then saw an inch off the stand and then weld the foot back on, need to put a blob of weld in the U shape bracket so the stand dont go forward to much, not much to do but its a pain if you aint got a welder or know someone with a welder

cheers bb1000, fortunatly i know a decent welder though the only thing that concerns me is getting the foot at the right angle, the way i see it the more surface area taouching the ground the more stable.

Perhaps the foot requires to be welded while the stand is attached to the bike to ensure accuraccy?

funny really, i'd read all the occasional comments about the stand being crap & you should fit a busby one or a gsxr one & i've always thought "yep, i need to get one!". you see, the problem with my stand is that it stands the bike up almost upright to the point that i have to choose my parking spots with care or the bike will topple over onto the right side & i have been assuming that that is the reason for them being crap.

now it would seem that it is the opposite & that the original stands are too short & i have been wrong all this time! i can only assume now that someone has put a new stand on the bike which is too long:roll
