Our wonderful (inaccurate) voltmeter

Hi guys, did a quick search and found nothing, so thought I'd ask the masses :) Has anyone investigated why our voltmeter is so far off? Is it simply a voltage drop across the wiring that feeds the power to the dash, or a poor earth connection for the dash - or does the correct voltage go in and the calculation of the dash way out? If it's never been looked into I might pull the front fairing off and have a play on the weekend. I'm a VW technical trainer so used to playing with european electrics hehe...
 
FYI the dash voltmeter works fine, it's just the wire feeding the voltage to it. Running an additional write to the secondary fuse box fixes the issue (also steadies and brightened the display) but it would be nice to not to have to have yet another wire going from the battery! Anyone have a wiring diagram that also includes connector locations?
 
Is this another case of poor crimping somewhere - rectified by careful solder run into the crimp joints?
 
Hmm not sure yet but guessing so. The wiring diagram shows a few internal crimp connections but no locations where they are - will most likely need to strip the loom right down to find it :-/ see how I go, unfortunately only a few mins of playtime this weekend...mainly because perfect weather so HAD to ride ;-)
 
In saying that Dr.D, do you have any specific reference material that has the exact locations of the internal crimps? Little bit more of a look then - it is not one area unfortunately, its a collective of wiring sections will there own issues (damn!) I didnt test under full load due to time so just a few consumers on, but still had 0.5V drop from 30A main fuse to ignition switch, 0.2V drop through the switch and 0.2V from ign switch connector to fuses so almost a Volt could be made up there, which would stabilise the lights on the dash plus get the voltmeter a lot closer to the mark. Looking at the wiring diagram there are only a couple of crimps that redoing may help if they are the culprits. I'll give all the main connectors a clean during the week and see if i can easily get to the crimp areas without a further pull apart but unfortunately i'm guessing either a full rewire or addition wires look like the only solution...
 
Its something I have earmarked for winter when I strip down the body work - I have other bikes for after October!
 
It's currently winter here but still 20 degrees and blue skies ;-) almost a case of waiting for summer for us down under, gets too hot riding with dull leathers and 38+ degrees!!

Given the difference the brown connector mod made (I undid the wires into the block and soldered the crimp rather than cut), I am going to go through the rest of the multi-blocks. I would think the voltage drop (and possibly other glitches) is due to poor crimp connections. Others have added extra wires or cut blocks out. I prefer to get the multi-blocks working properly - just patience and time in the big man cave!
 
You right mate I have always wondered whether it would be a good idea to buy another loom and just go through every single connector before fitting it to the bike, I bet it would be worth it
