I just picked up an rsvr from a dealer and rode it 10 miles home, yesterday. It was given a full service etc. It was a bit dirty and had naff stickers on it so i set about cleaning , then i noticed the chain was slack, slack enough to be hitting the exhaust!
The chain has a really bad tight spot and when it`s tensioned with enough free play, the other side has 2 inch`s of play.

I know it`s a consumable etc,,,, but when you put £5500 in there pocket you don`t expect to be paying out for a chain and sprockets 10 miles later. :pirate

A DEALER ? - WHICH DEALER?
Their poor service just reprisents them trying to make more money from the deal :jack that is just not good enough :rant

name & shame...
if it was given a full service im pretty sure that would include sorting a dodgy chain and sprockets, have a look at the oil colour if its really black already they probably didnt service it (im pretty sure fresh oil wouldnt go totally black in just 10 miles)

i would be going over it with a fine tooth comb and finding everything wrong that they failed to tell you about, make a list. if anything is really bad and would have affected the price then you should be talking to them and if they dont want to play fair tell them you will get trading standards and the department of transport involved

the more dealers who get away with crap like this, the more will start trying to and we will end up with no trustworthy bike dealers. i have no faith in dealers anymore..

Sorry mate but you accepted to take the bike "dirty & with naff stickers"out of the dealer. As for the price you paid surely it must be a near new bike so should be a minter?I bought my 04 factory in mint spec from a general dealer at a fair price but service backup etc has been crap.Do what i did and moan with your dealer till warranty runs out then go else where.Speaking of which, anyone give a top service around Leeds area ?

before you name and shame dude.......

having been on both sides of the counter , my suggestion is you give the dealer a chance to redeem himself, if your not happy then talk to em mate.........if they are reasonable people then they will see whats goin on and deal with any issues that they might have missed!!

if not then go for it mate dealers that dont pull there weight deserve all the **** they get!

I don`t want to name them yet, i phoned and said the chain was knackered and had a mega tight spot. He just said he would get me a price for the chain ( he obviously isn`t going to pay for it ). It turns out the bike was serviced by them just before it was traded in. Looking at the paper work, that was in May.

The oil and fluids are ok, and it runs fine. when i say `dirty` it`s probably okay by most peoples standards. In my line of work attension to detail is everything so my bike`s are practically concorse clean. Or i`ve got OCD:thumbup.

I`m just a bit miffed at needing a chain already!:angry

so what are you moaning about then, you should have told them to take the stickers off, also if they didnt spot a duff chain in may when they serviced it then i wouldnt let them touch it again :eatcorn

What you have to remember is that you have purchased a used bike!

However, saying that I would not expect the chain to have a tight spot and would certainly expect the selling retailer to rectify this at no cost to yourself.

If they expect you to pay then simply advise them that they had duty of care in delivering a bike that had a defect and that if this defect is not rectified to your satisfaction then under the sale of goods act 1979 you will be pursuing them for a full and unconditional refund of your paid funds.

If in doubt consult this web page - Click Me or contact me I know quite a bit about consumer law and what I don't know my legal team will. LOL

I just went and double checked, the sprockets look okay, but when i have roughly 1 inch of slack the other has 2 and can contact the exhaust. Def need a new one.

Don't they have to be 'fit for use?' Plus a worn chain is dangerous and I'd have thought you'd have some leverage there as to them selling a vehicle that is not safe..

Years ago I bought a car from a main dealer, and it turned out to need nearly £1000 worth of repairs..Wrote to the MD stating the faults and threatened to report them. etc etc..Got a letter back by return of post..They repaired all the faults, plus got free servicing and MOT's (including parts) for 2 years...

The vehicle has to be fit for use..

I too bought a second hand bike , but paid extra for a 2 year warranty , as my bike only had 1500kms on it when bought , now im getting a new dash as the old 1 had a fault , best 1000dollars ive ever spent for a warranty , it took a few phone calls but dont trust any dealer !Id get the missus to hound them , as mine does a good job at hounding me!

I'm with Fusebox on this one....

Have a chat with the dealer, put your disatifaction to them in a positive and proactive way to see what they can do about it. Dealers generally don't want disatisfied customers, so try and get them to see it from your side (but you must also understand theirs).

Have a plan what you want done and be prepared to compromise. After all you did buy a second hand bike with presumably plenty of oportunity to poke about with it. If they can't give you what you want as the cash cost is too much, try getting something that is easy for them ie free labour time and free fitment, cost price etc. Only then, if you get brick walls and no joy, do you name and shame!!!!

Hope this all works out for you, as it is a real bummer when you find things are not all as they should be with your new toy!.....:thumbup

TT

I`m going to have a word with them on monday. I don`t mind fitting the chain myself ( I`ve fitted loads ), they have a chain in stock and i`ll be pushing for it for free. Seems fair to me , i get what i want and i don`t take up their time.

I can't believe how bad the dealers are. I bought my RSVR on an 09 plate and did about 100 miles when my ignition barrel died and cut the ignition, while exiting a roundabout at about 50 mph. Luckily minimum damage to the bike, top panel smashed and side panels sent away to be re painted... But that was just the start of it, the Aprilia dealer put a warranty claim in for the ignition barrel but wouldn't cover the cost of repair, as no way to prove it was that, even though the bike will only start when wiggling the key??? They have now had the bike for 5 weeks and are still waiting for parts to come in from the factory, but found out yesterday that Aprilia IT have shut down for summer hols...

I am not a fair weather rider and was wanting to use it as an all year round form of transport...

Why oh why did I sell my blade???

Has anyone else had trouble with ignition barrels?

A few interesting points here..
1.) What do you mean 'when one has an inch of slack, the other has two'? You don't mean the upper + lower chain lines? Get the top tight (as though it's driving) and then look at the bottom.

2.) I too know what it's like to be on the other side of the counter. 4 years selling mtb's, 3 years selling cars and now I sell advertising. A used bike is a used bike- be honest about what is acceptable and what isn't. I used to sell cars with 3mm tread on the tyres, sure people wanted new ones but where does that money come from? It's a business!

3.) Don't let people say you paid too much, they got a better deal etc...They don't know the circumstances. For all you know they got knocked on their PX which is how they got the money off!

4.) I wish you the best of luck getting this sorted, but try to avoid getting heavy handed with Consumer Goods Act etc. Everyone kicks up a fuss about it, but if you say something wrong or use incorrect terminology it can leave egg on your face.

For instance, amb67 has said the dealer has a duty of care to deliver a bike with a defect. Obviously it was a typo, but that makes no sense and if you wrote that in a letter to the dealer he'll laugh his ass off.

I think most people are reasonable, I'm sure if it's a knackered chain it'll get sorted or perhaps they'll do the chain at cost and the labour free?

If the chain is knackered it WILL have worn the sprockets. It's a false economy not to change the whole lot as a set, don't be tempted.
