I think some of them do ballasts with extra long leads specifically for applications like that,not sure where I've seen them though.

I'll post a link if I can find it.

has anyone done a mod guide for a 07 bike?

I would also be ups for a set of these too. Would anyone go halves with me on these?

The guide is pretty generic mate. I used the same process on my car so it will be very similar to your bike as well.

I've had an email back from a company that will make the extension cables to our specific lengths although there is a minimum order of 10 leads. I will measure up how long it needs to be to comfortably place the ballasts in the seat hump and get back to them.

nice idea mate. i have hid on my mille and a pair on my vfr and tucking away even the slim ballasts somewhere up front is tricky. being able to put them further back would make it much easier :thumbup

The main reason I can see for the leads from the ballasts to the lamps is that the ballast is actually a high voltage transformer and the leads are HT leads.
I beleieve the voltage is in the region of 20KV, albeit not a high power output I would exercise caution with the routing and possible fraying of the cables.
This is not an issue on cars and other vehicles as they do not have a rotatting headstock.
The leads should be made with high grade insulation as the HT coil leads are on all vehicles.
Also worh considering a re-prime push switch for the high beam relay just in case the ballast does not prime properly.

Very good point :thumbup at least with the ballasts contained in the nose area there is less change of a break occuring due to bar movement. I tied the single slimline ballast to the alloy fairing cross mount but it's not ideal,I suppose with a bit of ingenuity and bracket making finding a home for 3 should be possible.
 
This forum is detrimental to my bank balance! Me and a mate just went halves on a set of these, if I think of a decent way to mount the ballast out of site, I'll post a pic. I think I will try to secure it to the crossbar as that looks like the best ouf of the way position.

As an owner of a pre 2003 model I have the luxury of having a manually switchable headlight.
I must say the ballasts don't always fire up first time and especially when the starter motor is run the voltage drops causing the ballast to not fire properly.
This is where having the manually operated switch is a bonus.
There is no need for a relay as the bike already has a low and high beam relay.
If you have a look at the post I made specifying the diode modification it details the wiring of the lights circuit. You could add a normally closed momentary action switch in line with the coil of the relay to momentarily interrupt the control thus shutting off the light for the period of time the button is held in.
This would then hopefully cause the ballast to strike on re-energisation. (my switching on and off of the headlight does this and it generally strikes first time once the engine is running.
The option of retrofitting an earlier left hand cluster is far more attractive in my opinion. (bit of a pricier option but cleaner).

I too have a pre 03 model, with a switch, but I tend to leave the lights on anyway, otherwise I forget to turn them on for the next ride!
 
Just finished installing this beauty, and wow what a difference!

I've put the ballast where Pompey suggested but I'm not 100% happy with it there so I'll probably make a small bracket for it and locate it further inside the nose cone. Excellent instructions as well Pompey couldn't fault them. It took me a couple of hours mainly due to the fact I was trying to work out the best place to put the ballast.

Neil, I'll get your half off tomorrow and you too can be wowed by the bright lights!!

I've put the ballast where Pompey suggested but I'm not 100% happy with it there so I'll probably make a small bracket for it and locate it further inside the nose cone. Excellent instructions as well Pompey couldn't fault them. It took me a couple of hours mainly due to the fact I was trying to work out the best place to put the ballast.

You're absolutely right, photos don't do it justice. I've only had my lights on for a short time and havn't notice the ballast getting warm. How hot does it get? The last thing I want is for the ballast to fry itself or something else!:dowhat

They won't get ridiculously hot but the cooler they are kept the longer they will last. I had mine on for 2 hours and it wasn't at all hot but it is a possibility, don't worry about it. When I've got a few quid saved up I'll buy another kit for the high beam and extension leads for all three ballasts and place them in the rear pod but for now the ballast up front is not a problem for me as I don't really notice it.

cheers pal....looking forward to recieving it.......the front fairing is the only fairing currently attatched to the bike so looks like its getting naked in the near future.:devious

Has anyone got any pics where they have put their ballasts other than where Pompey put his? Thanks for the guide though - awesome!
 
The link to the kit used hear has ended. I can only find h1 kits for the mille on ebay, whats the difference between h7 and h1 please? Will H1 fit correctly?
