Just been out on the bike Aprilia RSVR1000 2004 model.... Approached a roundabout and she cut out going down through the gears when i hit neutral she stalled. Tried to restart from the starter button....Nothing!! It just ticks and then all the instrument lights went off and on. Checked all fuses and changed the battery over now and it just about wanted to start up...can anyone shed some light on this obviuosly stupid electrical problem...Thank you all Daz....
Ps the bike has been starting fine and running brilliantly until now..

First of all you need to make sure the battery is being charged.

You'll need a multimeter to check the actual charge rate, would expect at least 13.8v at idle with no consumers on.

The ticking noise is most likely the starter solenoid, chances are that it is either the starter solenoid that has failed or the charging system has a problem.

Let us know what the charge rates like before you go any further.

Hi amb..I would say there is plenty of voltage there, however i have removed the battery and stuck it on charge for tonight. It seems to me like this starter motor solenoid as my mate and i changed over the battery and it just about started but then went straight back to a ticking noise. As if something took all the power away from the battery.....Where is the starter motor solenoid situated? I have text my mate to see if he could remember the readings on his multimeter, so should find out shortlt. Just odd how it been running great and then nothing...:dunno

That 11.4v can't be the charge rate, if it is then you have a charge system fault. You need at least 13.8v to charge the battery.

Put your multimeter across the battery terminals and see what you get when the bikes idling.

The starter solenoid should be under the seat although I'm not too sure on the 04 models.

Be careful with the diagnosis, I understand you put a fully charged battery on it and it still clicked away. A failure in the charging circuit could in effect drain a fully charged battery in minutes. (It will turn your battery power in to heat so be aware if any parts are getting very hot)

CHECK THE BROWN CONNECTORS one between the V of the engine and the other under the right hand side fairing.....if they look melted, connect the wires direct (cut off the brown conectors)

Hi amb, i cant check the idle speed as the bike wont start to check it...I will strip down the palstics tomorow and check the wires also now....

You need to start the bike and test the charge voltage before you go down the route of carrying out any stripping or mods to the wiring.

If you start stripping the bike down you could end up with an RSV that makes a good coffee table and that's all.

Ok so how do you suggest i get it started if all it is doing is nothing!!! If it is a charging issue, what should i be looking to fix then???

I had a situation where the bike just clicked at me and wouldnt start:rant, with the sound from the seat unit....... Mine turned out to be a ECU/Eprom related issue, (clicking from ECU) dont know if its possible for a chip to suddenly fail, but im sure someone on here will know. Anyhoo hope u get it sorted mate:thumbup

Hi olek...That is exactly what the bike is doing, can you explain more as to what you had to do...I will check the brown connectors also...

My bike has never had the brown connector issue but i read loads of post about it on the net so i just cut them out anyway just in case . You need 12 inches of heat shrink and a soldering iron ,bit fiddly but worth doing anyway ,i read that sometimes they look ok but still have high resistance joints inside . The plugs are the one that joins the rectifier with the loom and just behind the coolant bottle is the other one on the same loom ..

Charge your battery overnight and give it a go tomorrow.

Failing that you can jump start it with a set of good leads, however I would advise against this as you could spike the ECU.

If it starts OK tomorrow with a fully charged battery then you can rule out the solenoid and the chances are it's a charging system defect.

If you put a fully charged battery on tomorrow and it still clicks then the solenoid is dead or the starter button is on the fritz.

Make sure your battery is in tip top condition before fitting.

Quite simple really, .................. I got cheesy to sort it lol :thumbup

but on a serious note you would need to take the bike off Optimate,
remove seat pads, look between the two seat pads for the ECU (metal cased box under a rubber flap, Disconnect carefully the 2 plugs, Unscrew the 4 retaining screws and remove outer casing, Locate eprom chip, Replace and reinstall by doing in reverse......:roll

However no point doing all that unless you have a replacement chip :doug

Oh dear....Seems to be quite a number of problems arrising here now. I will have a check at everything you have all suggested. Shame i really was getting into this bike and never expected to have such annoying problems like this, so early on into ownership. Ah well chin up, am sure i will get to the bottom of it. thanks to all for advice.....:thumbup

STICK WITH IT DAZ THESE BIKES ARE BRILL ..

IT WILL NOT BE AS BAD AS YOU THINK I'M SURE:thumbup

ps the connector job is easy really so dont worry nothing techy just get the wires in the right order with each other obvious really

Regrettably these bikes do have some issues but I would say no more than its Japanese counterparts.

Be patient with it cause it will be an awesome bike once you have ironed out the niggles that the previous owner caused.

You've made a move in the right direction, joined this forum.

We'll help you sort the issues out, just be careful not to get bamboozled by all the information and if you get lost, give me a shout and if I can help I will and if I can't I will let you know who can.

Alan
