Morning all, just got back from the Spanish GP, unfortunately on a plane!
Four of us left last Wednesday, through France hooning down those ace N and D roads D940,922 N157etc.
Having a right crack with the lads got to the bottom of the Pyrenees, wicked ride up for about 10 km then the heavens open.
my god never seen rain so heavy, got separated so couldn't stop, made it over the top and headed for Barcelona.
Barreling down the motorway at about 110ish she coughs, goughs again I think f....ing **** Spanish fuel.....(you know whats coming) just get to the turn off and she dies.
Click, click, bugger! as luck would have it hotel only a mile or so away, so the lads take the bag and lid and I push it. A cold one I
s waiting for me when I arrive along with the p..ss taking. Anyway in the morning off to the local scooter shop and managed to get the battery charged , back to the bike with the dreaded multimeter and yes you've guessed it..... fried stator !!
got the bike shipped to a garage for an estimate,, 750euros plus a weeks wait for parts! f..k that. After a two day wait (Spanish festival weekend) the garage finally contact Carol Nash European and give them the information of the repair. anyway I convinced them to fly me home and send the bike back on a truck(10 to 14 working days)Bugger!!
That should give me time to get all the information and parts to do the job. So I need to pick your collective brains, spoke to AP performance for prices ,Stator £ 145, reg/rec £88, plus a gasket. looked at electrex but didn't get good vibes from the posts I read. AP sounded positive that there's is the better one, anyone know if it's 500w or less (can't remember what he said) and the reg/rec is good. Just a couple of things about the job I am not sure of (I AM reading all the post I can find on the forums) do you need the special tool to remove the stator cover or will a little gentle tap with a rubber mallet loosen it (I know about the pull of the magnet). also the bolts that hold the stator to the cover inside I am not clear what the torque setting is and what number locktite to use 243 or 648 .Ihave downloaded the manual with the settings,, it's the wording I am getting confused with(old Git). I will figure out a way to waterproof the connectors, change them or maybe think about remounting the reg/rec somewhere else(any ideas) I am greatful of any replys (even the p..ss takes)! Hey we all got home in one piece that the important thing, Right. P.S. that ducati rear m/cylinder mod was fine no dramas it just worked.thanks guys

A bit of an adventure there mucker, glad it wiz only yer machine that peged oot.

A canae give yer the winfo yer need but waeoot a doubt KB'll be along tae answer yer questions.

All a can say is that yer need a lower output stator than 500,,,,,,,,,last time a noticed the recommended fir a gen 2 wiz 380.

Whit's yer machine anyhoo. ???

hope you get it sorted mate, I would stick with Griff at AP for the replacement mate as they seem to know what they are doing and will ensure you get the right one.
as for removal its pretty straight forward
remove the plastics, belly pan, frame protector and oil tank cover
drain the oil and remove the oil tank or disconnect the top oil pipe and swing the tank out
remove all the retaining bolts from the cover and the cable retaining bolt on the top of the housing
the cover will come away with a little persuasion, the mounting hole for the cable give s somewhere to get a purchase
remove the stator retaining bolts and disconnect the cable connector, there are 2 types of lead on the stator a short lead to a connector on the oil tank side or a long lead on the opposite side. if you have the long lead tie a piece of strong string to the connector before you pull it through then use the string to pull the new lead through.
when you replace the stator casing I found it a big help using 4 pieces of 6mm threaded bar to help guide the casing into place without moving the gasket.
cant remember the torque settings but will have a look in the morning.
hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys, Forgot to say the bike is a 07 Tuono Factory, will go with AP I think, will ring them when I get the bike back. Thanks for the how-to Brooksy, spent the last day or two trawling the web for info, does 11nm torque and Loctite 243 sound familiar?
Loads of info on AF1 site, some of it mind bogling, typical Italian bike infuriating but addictive (had a couple of Guzzi's in the past).
Yes Aldo can't see the sense in going with 500w stator again, hopefully AP's stator has the different gauge windings to drop the wattage down.
Will replace the reg/rec aswell with an improved unit (AF1 site goes into a lot of detail on the series type reg/rec over the OEM shunt type).
New cover gasket, oil and filter hopefully job done for about £250, nowhere near the Spanish dealers price. Only pisser is the month without the bike!!
