forking oil seals AGAIN!

Never had a problem in my Honda, unlike the Kawakacky ;)

I never had a problem with the Honda's I've owned. But owning them is boring as hell, even a blade will never give you a sence of ownership/love you get from owning even looking at bikes like the Ducati/MV Agusta/Aprillia that i have had since.

The only thing you get with aprilia with soul and passion is a dirty drive way....

Nothing on my driveway mate off the Ape. Never had a leak on it.
I think you must lube your chain too much:biggrin

if you don't like aprilia's then the question begs to be asked. Why are you here? Do you not have any friends?

Aprilia have passionately welded my oil tank and the soul of the mounting bracket design has cracked off causing the leak!

i do enjoy the ape when it is working :)

I had exactly the same problem on my 04 R1. a few weeks after I bought it the right leg was leaking. Took it back to the dealer and they had for a day and allegedly changed the seal. 250 miles later leaking again:jack

back to the dealer. They had it 4 days leaving it outside in the rain. When I picked it up it was only running on 3 cylinders! Double:jack

rode home on 3 cyls and did 60 miles. By the time I was half way home the fooooking oil was pouring out the leg. :jack:jack

took it to my brothers garage to check the misfire and found water in 2 of the plug sockets and the plug tops had rusted. New plugs in and back to the dealer. Seriously:angry: and well pisser2:pisser2:pisser2:pisser2:pisser2:pisser2:pisser2 off.

They said they were going to get some seals from Yamaha which should sort it! What bloody seals were they using before then.

You know what's coming, yep bloodything still leaking.

My brother took my legs out and off to ktech. There was a small nick in the stanchion probably from a stone and that was splitting the seal. They overhauled them and set them up for me didn't have a problem for 2 years when it was just starting to leave a oil film at the bottom of the fork travel.

Could be the same with yours mate and a decent outfit should be able to find the problem and sort it. The other possibility is worn bushes? That can cause seals to go early

They are technically stiffer under braking forces.

But unless used to the bikes limits on the track I think they like Radial brakes are only good for stroking peoples ego's in the bar.

If you talk to Maxton Eng they will tell you for road use there is no advantage one way or another.

The only thing that needs doing is setting whichever type you use up PROPERLY for your weight and riding style.

usd's are surely more prone to problems with debris attacking the fork legs as it's the chrome in the exposed area, whereas right way ups it's only the painted bit that gets chipped. Wonder whether i can find a mudguard with a bit of protection on it?

Good idea regarding the mudguard legs if it could be done. RWU forks still suffer stone chips tho' in spite of having raised shields fitted to the top seals.

When I took my SV forks to Maxton for a rebuild the first thing Richard pointed out was a few stone chips in the chrome. Good tip here,he showed me a pair of forks off an Irish road racing bike where the owner had extended the shields up another couple of inches by rivetting an extension to the originals, not too elegant but certainly practical.

okay been to Southern Cross today, 15 miles of the busiest roads (N circular) in the world in pissing rain, for them to say.................................

"Can't find any leak"

they 'say' they took the dust seal off and everything and couldn't find a leak. Checked the fork oil level and it's all fine.

So what the hell was the oil like fluid which covered the bottom of my fork the other day?? All my other levels are fine, it's not brake, clutch or engine oil. when I wiped it off it was like ever so slightly used engine oil, slightly brownish on the paper roll I used. When I touch the chrome part of my fork leg it's greasy on that side, and not on the other. fortunately it's not cost me any more than time and grief getting soaked so far but I'm still a bit worried to say the least
