seized engine i mean. use what you want anyway if the manufacturer recomends 15w50 and you want to save 10$ then go on and use a friting oil if it is worth it. anyway maybe your geographical location allows you to use such an oil with no problems. what i simportant is the APi specification anyway

Although my knowledge of oil specification is limited, I'm going to have to agree with AMB on this one - a seized engine is unlikely to be from oil grade and more to do with improper maintenance (i.e overfilled, undefilled, not changed regularly enough etc). Of course this can only be presumption because I don't know the actual circumstances, but as you say after saying only use the grade recommended is that as long as it is indeed graded then thats the most important. One thing to note is that Manufacturers will recommend whatever oil they can get the best deal on when releaseing the bike for sale from production (a good example of this is Husqvarna - they have regularly changed oil spec when releasing the following years model of the same bike).

Bloody hell that was was a pretty good debate, I am sorry chaps to throw a spanner in the works, I to use 10/40w semi manufactured by shell. This is used all other V twins. I am not sure there is a right or wrong. The oil intervals siurely is the most important. Great information though. Thanks.

In all my years working as an engineer, I've never known an engine failure due to wrong oil grade! The difference between the weight of a 50 vs 40 oil is pretty small, in fact if you left your 50 grade oil in a bit too long it'd soon degrade and become thinner like a 40 grade anyway! The problem could arise if 10/40 oil wasn't changed regularly enough, it'd become thinner still, 30 grade or less (which is hardly the fault of the oil!), and even then I'd be surprised to see an engine actually seize because of it, most cylinder siezures are due to an overheat rather than oil related. Oil related problems usually manifest themselves as bearing failures.
I actually use 15w50 not because I think there is anything wrong with 10w40 but when I changed to 15w50 I found the engine ran quieter due to the thicker oil, the trade off for that is my gearchange is harder and neutral is tricky until I've done a few miles... each to their own :thumbup

Just thought I would let you know guys I got 4 bottles of the semi and they gave me a fully 10w15 for £14.99. I think fully at that price is a steal!
