so Al, does oil degrade (go stale if you will) over time if its sitting on the shelf? or does it need the heat to degrade?

May be a numpty question, but if I was to say buy a bulk load will I have hygroscopic probs later on?

Deacs :thumbup

Yes it does degrade very slightly but nothing like brake fluid does.

If your engine oil is in a sealed container it would last for a minimum of 24 - 36 months, most likely longer. Oil containers rarely have best before or use by dates, that's because degradation is negligible during storage.

I have bought two of those four litre cans of 10W/40 from HG and the second one will be used around February 2010 or slightly later.

Should the first batch of oil I put in prove to be as good as it should be and the offer is still on at HG then I'll be buying many more cans for future use.

To give you some idea of storage of oils etc... when I worked for Honda our brake fluid cans came delivered in cases that had date stamps for retail sale some 10 years in the future. :thumbup

cheers matey appraciate it (10 years hey, they don't retail it like that though ;) ). Think I will be doing a bulk buy on my next trip back - stuff over here is expensive.

My local garage just told me that they use 15-50 semi in my Mille. How would the 10-40 do in my Mille?

It'll be fine mate, most garages stick 10W/40 in all motorcycles they service, surprised to hear yours actually uses 15/50. :eatcorn

Seems to be all car based. Motorbike oils, I have been told, do so much more as it also acts as a coolant.

Oh it does Stefano, it cools, cleans, lubricates has anti foaming properties to prevent the oil cavitating under pressure and many more. That site just explains the very basics of viscosity in oils, not nescesarily motorcycle oil.

Mate, you have spent the whole day in front of the computer. Saving the tyres for tomorrow?
BTW: where can I find a good value Michelin Road Pilot 2 rear?

Stick with the 10W/40 oil and make sure it's for 4 stroke motorcycles too. This HG oil would suit you down to the ground mate. :thumbup

Oil is just like tyres and women, find one you like and stick with it :)

oh and AMB's bought all the Oil by the looks of it !

Need to change my oil soon and whilst scouring the many web sites to find the best deal on oil I came across this:

HG Oil Deal - £10.99 for 4 Litres

Checked out the specs and it meets with the manufacturers spec and although Aprilia recommend 15W/50 for our bikes this will be OK. :thumbup As it has been said before on many threads, most Aprilia dealers use 10w/40 in the workshops anyhow.

Gotta go know as I'm off to HG to buy a couple of cans. :doug
i know 2 people using 10w40 oil and wasting their engine so i would not recomend you buying something else than 15w50 as the engine seems to be quite oil sensitive

What do you mean 'wasting their engine'?

Been in the motor industry for more years than I care to mention and can't remember the last time I heard an engine failing due to the wrong grade of oil. This 10W40 is not a million miles away from the 15W/50 and would not cause any engine damage if filled to the correct levels.

Usually the failure is caused by overfilling or low oil levels, causing oil starvation.

But if you are unconvinced then please do continue to use 15W/50 and I shall buy all the cheap 10W/40 from HG. :doug

Looks like the deal is off (or Al has bought it all :devious) cos it aint on the HG website anymore! :dunno

They take these offers off the web site before the offer ends in store so pop down to your local store and see what they have left.

Take care cause as sure as eggs are eggs they'll try and charge you £13.99 for each can when it's clearly labelled up at £10.99. He said it was a bar code error when I challenged him. LOL
