IT WONT START AGAIN....THE COLD MIGHT BE ATTACKING THE BIKE BUT IT HAS BEEN ON OPTIMATE!!!!!

IT BETTER START TOMORROW OR ITS GETTING SOLD:exclamation:exclamation:exclamation:angry:angry:angry:angry:angry:angry:angry:angry:angry:angry

Hi

An Aprilia specialist taught me the 'Ford' method of starting..

First

Is the battery good? Even in the cold, it should turn the engine freely, and not reset the dash (sign of low voltage). Put the cold start full on, leave the throttle alone, try starting in short bursts. Only try about 3 times. It will either start smoothly, or not at all.

If the bike is doing all the good stuff, has fuel etc, try this next bit once or twice only. Hold the throttle FULL OPEN - to the stop. Don't blip it. Try starting. You may get a couple of loud cracks, like a backfire. As soon as this happens, back off the throttle (remember cold start is still on), and the bike should clear its throat and go on fast tickover.

If anyone thinks this is wrong, do say. I probably revert to this about once a month on a bike that's been left unused for a while but is fully charged and has nothing wrong with it.

I know that if you try and try to start a bike that won't start, the sprag will go eventually, but having done that, it took a lot of abuse for this to happen - dozens of start attempts.

Thats pretty much how I do it too mate. First choice is no throttle and cold start lever. If that wont work and you suspect flooding do the above but never "blip" it or you will feltch the sprag.

mmmmmm well left it on optimate and will try tonight.

the thing was it was ridden saturday weekend just gone after coming back from griffs so know on that part everything is perfect and new....

just dont understand. might just be the extreme cold we are having.

:thumbupSince i put bigger battery on mine and updated to yam starter sol,and put idirum plugs in,i have no problems at all now. My bike is left outside hooked to opti 3,it is hardly used due to losing my job, but starts first time when i try it.
if you flood it ,i was always told to start with full open throttle but let go soon as it starts.
I would not wont to sell mine, and i did think of it because of the same problems when i brought it,but £100 well spent.Saying that if things dont pick up soon, she might have to go on ebay.:angry

The extremely cold weather we've been having may have killed your battery....i.e. it may have seemed ok in the slightly warmer weather but the minus Centigrade really knackers batteries fast...Would try above suggestions & then look into cold cranking power of battery...may not be up to the job!

Chris

Just because it's been hooked up to an Optimate doesn't mean the battery should be okay. I had the same thing before Christmas, bike used the day before for a long run, put back on the Optimate as soon as I got home. Wouldn't start the next day, though Optimate seemed to show that the battery was okay. I went out and bought a new battery (the better specification YTX14BS) and it started straight away. Has started first time every time since. :thumbup

There seems to be a misconception that if the battery is hooked to an optimate, then the battery must be OK.

The vast majority of starting problems with a Mille are weak batteries, in this cold weather the engine oil has soooooooo much more viscocity and it really takes a lot from the battery to just turn the motor over, let alone start it.
If you have any doubts about your battery, pleeeeeeeez do yourself a favour and throw it in the bin and buy a good battery like a YTZ14S-BS, this battery has far more cranking power and will solve a lot of your starting problem issues.

If you keep trying to start with a weak battery you WILL feck up other components that cost a lot more than a YTZ14S-BS to replace, don't blame Aprilia for a bike that is not starting when the problem lies with a consumable that needs replacing when it's useful life is over.

So to cap all that.................................................

Totally endorse what the guys are saying about the Optimate and about getting a new battery !!

the battery is already a 14bs :thumbup dont jump to conclusions and is fully charged....

anyway full throttle wound back to start seems to be the method when starting in cold. started no probs with that done :thumbup bike stays for another day

It could be a truck battery for all it matters if its got a duff cell that is failing under load then its knackered, likewise how do you know its fully charged ?.....my optimate told me that my battery was okay and fully charged but it had a duff cell and wouldn't hold up when cranking.

Full throttle starting will **** up your sprag sooner or later , dont risk it.

What year is it ?

bike is just going to sit on optimate till warmer weather now anyway, i needed to move it today thus needing it started.

full throttle starting wont always be used. just when necessary.

solenoid is getting changed this week.

when i sorted out my new battery which is the model badger says

standard is 90 amp cold cranking power
ytz14s-bs is 200or 220 cold cranking power

My battery is the Varta YTZ already so that isnt the problem as it isnt old.

just one thing I dont understand. well I have a lot of things I dont understand but just on this post :)
If replacing the battery to a bigger battery will help solve the starting issues, why did Aprilia fit the smaller under powered one? also if its down to the riders fault if it does not start cos of the battery then why do a lot of people do a brown wire mod, change the solenoid and pray the sprag still lives?

just a thought, never had a bike with so many fuballs :) You still got to love the mille :)

Good point. I also think Aprilia should have thought a lot more about this, especially since the RSV has been in production for many year and the common problems have been well known for long. Out of curiosity, does anyone know whether japs twins have the same problem and whether manufacturers have taken steps to solve them?
