just one thing I dont understand. well I have a lot of things I dont understand but just on this post :)
If replacing the battery to a bigger battery will help solve the starting issues, why did Aprilia fit the smaller under powered one? also if its down to the riders fault if it does not start cos of the battery then why do a lot of people do a brown wire mod, change the solenoid and pray the sprag still lives?

just a thought, never had a bike with so many fuballs :) You still got to love the mille :)

weight/cost etc etc

The standard batt is fine in most situations it's just the bigger batt etc gives you more firepower should things not go to plan.
It's a big lump to turn over so if anything is less than 100% she will struggle.

With a less than 100% batt in this cold weather the starter will take so much juice the spark is likely to be less than perfect. Hence why i luv iridium plugs and use them all the time due to same spark 1/3rd the voltage required.

Hope you got it sorted srchris, my prob. was the stator, all the best Steve

My yam super tenere was also a right bastid to start in anything near cold, quite a few times it got left at home whilst i took another hack to work etc, cause even if it got me there, i couldn't be sure it would get me home again, then it burnt out its reg.rectifier and melted the battery, time for that one to go.

When i fired my rsv up at the weekend, all the clocks reset as it turned over, and mine is kept on a optimate 24 hours aday 7 days a week, so looks like i'm gonna have to get a new battery for mine then............there goes more of my carbon fibre budget :)

I seem to have spent more on this bike in a month of ownership than all my other bikes totally last year .................. ;-)

I'm having the same issue, replaced old Yuasa eith Bosh YTX-14-BS, didn't use bike for last week and it's been cold outside down to -4 at nigh, the battery was taken from the bike and is been on optimate for full week, and this is brand new battery. Went to start this mornig - the engine spins like mad but it won't fire up. Tried with trottle wide open - nothing. Took off new battery and installed old knackered one - started with open trottle from firsr attempt. I didn't start on this battery before. Also it has new spark plugs. Sometimes it starts after sitting for 5 days and sometimes it won't after 1 day, and there's no logical explanation I can find, completely puzzled now.... wtf?

Here is you guys' answer to all Mille electrical problems: Replace the connector on the regulator. The bike can't charge the battery properly as this connector breaks down over time and is a HUGE kink in the system. Even if it looks fine - replace it. Solder the wires for free or find some other connectors of your choice. Mine used to spin and not start and do all those weird things. Everything was perfect on my system but still had problems... until I hard wired this connector. Take the big brown connector out of the electrical system. Mark the wires before you break them out. DO IT.

This is a SAD connector here. When you take it apart you will see. Small contact area on the spade connectors ARE NOT sufficient for the amps that flows through them.

After screwing with different batteries and replacing cables and cleaning all the ground points on engine and frame and all that stuff.... still had weird problems, dash resets and was a slave to the Battery Tender. NOT ANYMORE! All fixed so I consider this mandatory for all Mille owners- it's the most cost effective thing you could ever do to your bike.

I have often thought of putting a 7ah battery 12V under the rear seat cowl thus giving 21 amperes ..........but saying that I know feck all about electrics.

More of a problem on 04 onwards bikes, i have two of these connectors on my 04 bike, i hardwired the one behind the coolant reservoir and did the same with the one at the rectifier, the one behind the coolant reservoir had started to show signs of heat.
My 06 bike has only one connector at the rectifier as they seem to have done away with the other, first thing i did was cut it out and hardwire it.

I am sure they are not such a problem on the pre 04 bikes, but they are worth checking and hardwiring anyway as a precaution.

Plenty of info here

Just got back in from a bit of tinkering with this in my hand :biggrin

Soldered the wires properly, really well attached now. :thumbup
Wasnt much slack to work with though.

Well i fired mine up tonight...first time since November... and roared to life on the first hit of the starter button :pirate

You must have bought the wrong colour chris :devious

yeah the brown connector on my 02 rsvr was melted, so i hardwired the three wires also worth a check on all i reckon :)

Good point. I also think Aprilia should have thought a lot more about this, especially since the RSV has been in production for many year and the common problems have been well known for long. Out of curiosity, does anyone know whether japs twins have the same problem and whether manufacturers have taken steps to solve them?

I have exactly the same problem with my 'storm in cold weather, it just kills batteries, the reg/rect also has problems....
