Out for a play on Friday night with the boys when one of the guys starts to pull away from me on his triumph speed triple, that's strange I think, he never gets away from me. Then total loss of power followed by bad noises from the lump.
I pulled the clutch in and the engine stopped turning right away, but didn't seize up enough to lock the rear wheel. So off I go on Saturday morning to my local Ape dealer with bike on trailer .
Got a call back from them today telling me the engine has seize and looks like it will only be good as an anchor. What a *******, no warning lights at all all services done by main dealer
I'm well pissed of at work trying to earn as much cash as I can to get back on the road

Ouch, that's gotta hurt. Was it assembled in the Ducati workshop by mistake?! Or maybe just low on oil?

there was a guy selling a brand new engine on ebay few weeks back for 550..it didnt sell so keep your eyes peeled

The dealer is gonna look deeper into it tomorrow, I'll post. Anything he finds but it's not looking good

It will almost certainly be the front cylinder's big end bearing letting go.

Why does this only seem to affect Factory models? There must be a reason.

The chances of getting a new engine other than from ebay are very slight as i was told they are no longer made by Rotax.

Interested to hear the diagnosis. Sorry to hear it happened but maybe you'll be able to keep some of us from the same *****. No odd knocks or clicks at idle or rev? Seems strange you didnt hear something before .

It doesn't just affect Factories - it's the last incarnation of the Rotax engine. Bombadier Rotax changed the hardening process on the crank and stopped countersinking the oil gallery through the crank, as a result it can "pick up" the shell bearings and bang goes your big end

has happened to a few I know of - you have to run the engine in a touch longer than the earlier version. I have only heard of them going in their early life though, one blowing at 12k is a bit unusual.

Ahh couldn't remember which one it was. Mine had done 6.5k miles when it let go.

There aint much you can do to avoid it other than keep away from the limiter, so i was told. It does seem to particularly afflict 2008 bikes.

Yep deffo a bearing gone, can't yet say if it's mains or big end but the oil has glitter in it, gonna cost me £150 for them to remove the engine and split the cases. Only them will I know what else has been damaged and of the crank can be saved

I wouldn't bother mate. Buy one of the engines on ebay and save yourself the heartache.

I think the crank comes as a unit with the conrods attached, mine certainly did.

Mine also destroyed the cylinder head, valves, oil pickup, piston and some other bits which i can't remember The glitter in the oil is a sign its done a fair bit of damage. Parts alone came to £2k and that's if Aprilia can be arsed to supply them. My rebuild took 4 months in total due to their inefficiency and slackness.

I was always led to believe the Rotax engines were bullet proof. Clearly not.
Gutted for you CTD.

Ditto, I thought they were supposed to be really strong engines. Just had my 6000 mile service...gulp...

The last twelve months have been pretty ****, had two operations and facing further treatment, lost a close friend in an accident and currently facing redundancy.
through all this the tuono has kept me sane, then you hear of things like this and now i will be worrying about the engine going bang.
Dood luck in sorting this out.

cheers for all the advice guys i'll keep you informed

Bloody hell, that's all I need. I had one of those Buell things and I got shot of it due to the dodgy nature of its engines and other parts. I was happy on my 2008 T, but now I will have to seriously start looking at something else for next year as I just can't have something that has a major fault like this. Does anyone know if this affects 2010 models? I may trade up to one of those at the end of the year if the fault has been fixed.
