Ok so I have a 2001 mille and at the moment it doing a good imprestion of a paper weight when I try and start it it turns over but won't catch i've tried the normal stuff thought i'd flooded it so I disconected the fuel pump sensor still nothing checked the spark plugs and there fine the battery ok although I going to change it any way and now my sprag is makeing horrid noises again HELP.

What made you think you had flooded it Millemille? Were you, or have you been touching the throttle when trying to start?

Cold start lever on full I assume? No alarm or immobiliser in place? Do you happen to know what model battery you have and when was the bike last started? Left on charge via optimate or left to sit?

Not sure about the battery number, no I never go near the throttle when starting fast idel on of course I have a bit of a problem with it flooding when I start it but normally disconecting the sensor solves this.

Ok. I remember reading you had an Edwards engine fitted as a replacement for the previous engine. Did the edwards engine come with the throttle bodies or have they used your existing ones? On the same front, did they change the ecu or stay with your existing ecu?

If you've had problems with flooding on starting, then i'd hazard a guess that the throttle bodies/cold start linkage is set up incorrectly. Who led you to the disconnecting of the fuel sensor? If you are buying a new battery, then go for a YTZ14 BS :thumbup

The bike last started sunday and ran fine monday nothing, the throttle bodies are off my old engine and the ecu is the same although that had been re-maped to map 2 I will just say so everyone has a clear idea the engine was put in by me and couple of friends it had to be done on the cheep not only am I a poor instructer but i'm a single mum so i'm really skint.

Nothing wrong there Millemille :thumbup

The throttle bodies and ecu being off of your old engine will be fine. Which brings me to the next round of questions, did you have similar problems with the previous engine flooding/non starting? Pretty sure it was Sergio on here that had a similar starting issue due to the cold start linkage/set up screw having come loose. Vibration is a cause of a lot of the little niggles we all come across. Have you connected up the diag and checked the TPS sensor reading on the dash for a 0? Pop the tank and take a good look at the set up to the front left of the throttle bodies. The workshop manual is downloadable here via the file vault for reference. I'm guessing you have already checked that all of the pipes and hoses are in place and none have pulled themselves off.

Batteries on these are susceptible to being ok one day and not the next....don't give up :thumbup

Can't give up the bike isn't just my only form of transport its how I make a liveing I have checked the tps and I have got a 0, I did have similar problems on the last engine hence the nakered sprag on it looks like i've gone for a repeat performence with it, its a fantastic bike the first one that really suits me and my rideing style(completly mently)but i've only had it 2 months and had nothing but problems how unlucky is that.

i thought i was an unlucky sole!!

if you had a similar problem with your old lump, it does suggest that your problems are related to your bike's electrical. when you say flooded, i guess you can smell petrol real bad when cranking it over?

i have had cars with similar problems and it ended up being some stupid pressure/temperature sensor etc.

my mates TL1000R did the same as yours just before the bloke was coming to buy it, that turned out to be the tip-over sensor, it had come off it's mounting hook, so that could be worth a check

other than that, it's just a matter of swapping stuff until it's cured.

i do have a set of coils that didn't sell on ebay if you want to borrow them to try. other than that download the manual and get a multimeter out.

MilleMille,

I am only down the coast in Southend so can always pop up at the weekend and take a look if you like ?

I have a great deal of experience with recalcitrant Mille's :devious

The bike is in chelmsford where I work so I may take you up on that, starting to run out of ideas.

Spooky indeed, if I can actually get this thing running maybe we could sort a bit of a rideout, also a bit of advice from anyone in the essex area where to get aprilia bits.

Well like I said I can pop over to take a look, especially as its here in the centre of the Essex universe. !!

New spares or 2nd hand spares ?

PM also sent

You've been a tad unluckly Millemile but as has been said don't give up. You need to go through a process of elimination. As the guys have said, the battery needs to in tip top condition and preferable kept on an Optimate battery conditioner. Don't try and start the bike unless the battery is fully charged. Stater solenoids become lazy over time and older bikes will need them replacing by now with an uprated one. Yamaha do a direct plug and play replacement, part number 4KD81940-00 about £30 from any yamaha dealer.

As the very knowledgeable Caterpillar has said, check the cold start linkage is operating correctly. If unsure, you can bypass this by closing the lever fully and then very slightly opening the throttle as this does the same thing as the cold start lever.

If your sprag clutch is making a loud clanking noise on start up then chances are this has failed and needs replacing unfortuantely.

Kiwi has very kindly offered to have a look at it for you too so a second opinion by him may throw up some some new light

Hope you can get it sorted

Don't worry you'd really have to go some to upset me as an instructer I work with blokes all day so don't worry

I'm going back up to chelmsford tonight where the bike is so I shall be doing work on it tomorrow first thing i'm going to do is change the battery and the solanoid that bit should be easy but I need some advice on doing the sprag where to get the bits and how to get the old one off, can't afford to take it to a mechanic.
