Does your Mille get rattly when hot?

Yep, at least 20 minutes, stop somewhere safe and flat, switch off engine and immediately check the site tube.

I've got into the habbit of checking after a good ride out

no sidestand, just hold it upright.

Once you've stopped and switched off the engine, you can remain on the bike and peer down to look at sight tube

thanks legs M8

Where should it ideally be on shut off Midway on the sight tube or full

Can I top up with synthetic although in it is Semi?[/QUOTE]

I'm pretty sure that if you use synthetic (even just to top up) you'll be risking clutch slip - stick to the semi-synthetic.

Just checked there is feck all in the sight tube

Before I headed out there was About a Quarter in there.

Ill get it topped up straight away.

Tim, just add a 1/4 of a litre at a time so you can be sure not to overfill it.

If you overfill it, it's a bugger to drain.

So i give it a bit of oil ake it for a spin to warm it up again, then have a look then if I need to add a bit more I need to take it for a spin again..............feck me are all Italian bikes like this??? lol

Tim,

Best way to manage dry sump engines is to check the oil every time you stop and note the oil level in the sight tube.

I have a cable tie around mine so that I can record what level it was immediately after my ride. That way when I get home I know roughly how much to top it up. e.g. If it's between the bottom and midway on the sight tube I know it needs at least a quarter of a litre.

These bikes need TLC in all areas, if you don't they're heavy buggers to push. LOL

Am I alone in the fact that mine doesn't use that much oil to need this level of checking? :dunno I'm getting paranoid here, where's that sight tube, where's that sight tube :hehe

Just as a reference, in the last 6000 miles mine uses approximately 500-750ml per 2000 miles.

Cat, mine has used around a quarter of a litre over 1200 miles which I would consider pretty much standard for oil consumption.

Think Tim is like all of us when you get a new bike, a little paranoid that the bugger you bought it from sold it cos it was having problems.

Think from memory that the official oil consumption figure was around a litre per 2000 miles, so we are all OK by my calculations.

My 02R used about 1/2 litre every 1500 miles up to around 8000 miles. It now uses virtually nothing. It takes a while to bed these engines in from new

Hi all.

I've just got an 08 RSVR and I just wondered if anybody happens to know if the later RSVR's use as much oil as the earlier Mille's and at what sort of comsumption rate?

Thanks for any info in advance.

About the same Rage as they are essentially the same engine. They should use non at all once bedded in correctly. Don't be too gentle running the engine in, use the revs, just don't labour or use high revs for extended periods and get the first 600 mile sevice done at the correct time

Cheers for the clarification. :thumbup To be honest I suspected as much although I was just wondering if anything had changed after they updated it really.

As for running it in I'm essentially keeping it under 7000rpm and going up through the gears hard and fast to that point, as the manual and pretty much everyone has advised me to do, which sounds reasonable.

I'm currently on 597 miles and I've got it booked in for the first service on November 7th so hopefully it'll get serviced right on schedule and I should have full power shortly.....just in time to not be able to use it as the weather's crap. Bugger.

Don't think you are alone, just rode from Perth to Philip Island and back and only used 1.5 ltr in 8000km (06 model), engine now has 17000km on the clock so getting nicely bedded in. I did find it used more when new for about the first 6000km.

my 04 bike has 13k on it now and doesn't require any topping up at all between services. Run in not as per manual and much as you mentioned

My 2000 steed run in by the book. drank oil for england. So much so that i had to take spare oil when touring for top ups.

I personally think it's a combination of blow by on the rings which is a legacy of run in and a bit of valve stem seal weapage on some bikes. I guess it's something you live with really given the expense of doing something about it. It rarely gets worse or is detrimental to the running of the bike.

There was a guy recently that cured a similar issue by replacing valve stem seals on Af1. He had distinct oil smell/smoke at hot startup though.

Mine uses bugger all mate, your not alone! :thumbup How the engine is run in and ridden in its early life makes the difference for sure.
