Bit of advice/opinion, please lads.........

Having bought my first RSVR, and liking it that much, I`ve now seen a newer one, which is in better nick, less worn etc, which is for sale at a reputable dealer.

Only apparent issue (although I haven`t yet seen the bike is it`s miles from where I live) is the fact that the clocks have re-set, and now read around 4000 miles less than they should.

The dealer has immediately been honest and up-front about this, and although the bike is on an `08 plate, it`s done over 5000 miles (as stated by the previous one owner) so is showing somewhere over 1000 miles at the moment.

In short then, as above, as long as everything else on the bike is right, would YOU buy it, or would you steer clear ?

My only issue is having to explain to the next person when I come to sell it on, and if you`re selling privately, it immediately starts to sound dodgy once you start saying "oh, the clocks were re-set at 5k......:devious

Anyway, opinions please gents..........cheers.

Id steer clear but thats just me mate. I wonder how its managed to reset itself? I thought the clocks never lost the accrued mileage? Weird.

This is a known problem. So long as the bike is tidy otherwise , and its what you want , then lay down the cash IMHO

Cheers for the quick replies gents. :thumbup

Sabre: I`ve been reading up on here, and as you say, a well-known issue. Not sure why the clocks have been re-set yet, I presume it`s just been a battery disconnection for some reason, but didn`t they fix this problem after the earlier bikes ?

I know that it was meant to be happening on quite a few of the 04/05 models, but I would have thought it would have been sorted by `08 ?

Anyone else have the knowledge here on whether the later clocks should have had the re-setting issue resolved by an `08 plate ? :thumbup

I thought this problem only affected the early build new model RSVR and Factory circa 2003.5 / 2004.

I thought it was only the earlier models...my 03.9 RSV's clocks had re-set, but seller was upfront about it & the bike was brilliant....there must be quite a few out there that owners haven't been so honest about...If the price was right I'd certainly consider it, but it does seem a little strange for a newer model to have this issue.

You can usually judge if the mileage s somewhere near, by the general appearance of the bike. When I was looking for my first Aprilia, I looked at quite a few where the dealers swore blind that the low mileages were genuine, but the ones I saw,, had the look of bikes that had done many thousands of miles..
The one I finally bought, had (at the time) 1500 miles on the clock, and had the look and feel of a brand new bike..Original tyres, non chewed up nuts on back wheel spindle, chain adjusters etc..And obviously as new..

So if the bike you're looking at appears ok, I'd bye it, but would try to waggle a further discount..

Not sure about reseting the mileage but i know that a lot of 07-08 bikes had issues with the clocks and they were replaced under warranty.

My brothers bike has had two different sets of clocks fitted during its 4000 mile life. These have been documented in the warranty book by the dealer with the mileages, so all is above board.

I would not be put off buying it as long as everything with the bike looks good and rides perfect. Check the tyres as they are always a good indication of mileage and type of riding its done.
I'd prefer an honest dealer than find out later as you always do.

I always buy my bikes based on the actual condition of the machine. Things like mileage and service documentation can be manipulated by sellers and therefore mean diddly squat in my books.

If it looks right, rides right and priced right then make it yours. :thumbup

I am with AMB67

For Goodness sake I ran around with no speed sensor on mine for 5 months..... ITS SO easy to clock miles on a bike its a crime :) My hayabusa has a pickup on the sprocket cover, my Ninja has a cable lol. With basic skills you can pump a chip and "correct" speedos

I never EVER believe the odometer on any Car / Bike

Buy a bike on its CONDITION, what it looks and feels like

You cannot hide a hard Life... Look at Ron Wood :)

Fully agreed Amb. :thumbup

It can be described as one owner, FSH, mint, whatever.........but you can still view it and find out it`s a dog that someone`s been neglecting/thrashing.

We`ll see, but I`ll be having a ride down within the next few days, and I`ll take it from there.

Many thanks for ALL the replies gents; and as quite a new member to this forum, that`s already what I really like about it......there`s always someone to help out, quickly, and give their opinion/knowledge. :thumbup

Hi Dexter, hows it goin mate?:thumbup Slightly different story as mine is a 54 plate, but i looked all over for a clean tidy machine and boy did i see some crap.. I had all sorts of stories about mileages and clocks from dealers, but i think you sort of know if it looks right and you get the right feeling overall. I got mine from a dealer with 2000 Miles on it? 54 Plate? Questionable?, but i have all the MoT's / history etc. which seem to back it up but you never really know. In the end the bike was by far the cleanest i had seen and the condition backed up the mileage in my mind, so I went for it. After all that, i sent it back for a bit of a remap and they put a new battery on it aswell. What happens, yep, lost its mileage... marvellous.. Anyway, they gave me a letter to confirm what happened including date / mileage etc. so should appease the next owner(If i dont wrap it up and keep it just to look at it when i'm old and grey):devious. Might be worth asking if they have any documents to back up the loss of mileage or ask to see the log Book, get the last owner details so you can try and contact him? :devious

Cheers Rhode; things are going as well as can be expected at the moment mate. :thumbup

As regards the bike, yeah, they`ve got all the paperwork to back up what they`re saying, and the actual warranty claim re the replacement clocks.

As you say, you can generally tell whether it`s had a hard life on the condition etc. The dealer is happy enough that I`ll be well-chuffed with the bike when I see it, so fingers crossed.

LOL, cheers Eeza, the deed is (almost) done, and there is money now deposited. :thumbup

The bike is ready-to-roll, so once I get down there, sometime early next week, and I like their bike and they like mine, I`ll be coming home on it !! :doug
