morning all new to this site.
i have just bought a 99 mille a bike i have wanted for a long time but never had the cash spare. anyhow, got this one at the right price but it has a starter prob, it turn over very slowley and is laboured. ihave been told its either a prob with the starter itself or the the starter clutch. can any of you dudes out there point me in the right direction and give me some info on how thw multifunction dash works, cheers

hi mate and welcome is the battery a 12 volt or 14 as they do take a bit of power to turn over it has to be in tip top con_ as for the starter clutch dose it sound like a bag of bolts when you try to start in crunching it so its had it but try a good battery first:thumbup

Check the battery first, that it is fully charged or try jumping it off a 12v. If it turns over slowly still or makes odd noises, search "sprag clutch" on this forum. Particularly, "BMW sprag".

Welcome. :pirate

Depending on how mechanically minded (and you have to be fairly able) you may be able to change the sprag clutch yourself.

If you have doubts, do not attempt it, and find someone who knows what they are doing!

welcome hooner :thumbup
also have a look at the starter solonoid i had the same problem last month.
cost me £40:eek: from dealer but think you can get a yamaha one for cheaper there's a link on here some where

Welcome aboard hooner :thumbup

Have you checked what the voltage is showing on the dash before attempting to start? anything below 13.2-4 is likely to result in a non start.

Check the battery. If it is coded YTX12BS then consider upgrading to a YTX14BS or a YTZ14BS if it needs replacing, as these have greater CCA to help wake the beast within.

The solenoid usually results in a simple click click if it has past its sale by date. Bridging it with a screwdriver across the terminals will turn the bike over if the solenoid has pooped its clogs.

Sprag......don't get drawn in by the paranoia. Unless your bike is making some seriously unhealthy noises when trying to start, it is unlikely to be the dreaded sprag. Go for the easy and cheap fixes first, and remember not to continually attempt starting with a weak battery as this will put extra strain on the sprag mechanism.

Oh, and keep off the throttle when trying to start. Cold start lever only and a quick press should see you started. Be aware these wee beasties an flood quite quickly.

Good luck :D

Evenin all! Sorry for not replying earlier as pc is on the blink. Thanks to all who replied to my question, taken some advice, got new battery and new starter solenoid. However, the next problem, took casing off to investigate sprag clutch and had to disconnect alternator block connector. I feel I've made a big mistake as to reconnect it looks like Im going to have to take the engine out of the frame HELP!

:dunno hi hoon i am sure there is some one on here to give you some help.as far as me i can only say if you can get on line and see if there is a pic to show how it goes . sorry not much help .welcome aboard and i am sure help is on the way soon very good peeps on here. good luck. :thumbup

the conector block is between the cylinders and will not come thro any futher its as if the wires are to short or its tangled up some how

can you take a pic and maybe we can see the problem..if you take the cover off try and refit it ?

pull the tank off and give yaself some more room

yes it is tight in there but a bit of jiggery and you'll have it sorted
