Wonky fuel light, or wonky bike?! Is my bike supposed to do 60 miles to a tank?!

Hi folks.
Well I'm in my 6th week or so of Mille ownership, and while she looks great and she's an absolute pleasure to ride, I have some concerns.

I read in the manual that the fuel light comes on when the tank has about 4 litres left in. Fair enough I suppose, my last bike didn't have a fuel light, so this is an improvement.
But, I was riding round, happy as larry, fuel light comes on. So I tootle off into the petrol station, put £10 (about 7 litres) in, and carry on.
Literally about 20 miles later, the fuel light comes back on again.

Is there a problem with my Mille? There is no way that my bike is burning approx a litre of fuel every 3 miles surely? That'd be a tank range of 60 miles out of a 20 litre tank, which is freaking INSANE! :eek:

Are there certain things that I need to check or tests that I need to do?

PS: My last bike was an RS250, so I'm used to using higher revs in lower gears, I spend most of my riding around the 5-6k mark, though for cruising I let it drop to 2.5/3.

Are you riding like a boss??:devious i put £20 in my bike and i got bout 105 -110 miles before light came back on. My light comes on for a couple of seconds then goes of for ten mins before staying on.

Mine was doing that, it was on for a brief period, then when I looked down again a few seconds later it was off again and I thought "whew, false alarm". Now it's on and it's staying on!

I Went out for a ride on sat (hooray) and was doing about 75 miles to £15 worth of fuel but I have a renegade induction kit on the bike.
From what I've read these bikes are thirsty anyway and even more so with mods.

The Mille has a race pipe on and has had the blue wire cut, but is otherwise stock - airbox is unmodified. She backfires occasionally but I'm told that's normal.
I want to figure this out :p.
 
My 03 got around 80 to the tank. This rose to 85/90 with airbox, can pc3 and remap.

Only way to tell really is to put fuel in.
Fill to the rim, reset odometer, ride, when fuel light comes on again fill to the rim note how many litres, note how many miles.
 
Hi Sqiud where can I find blue wire to cut as I am not sure if my mille has it cut.
 
At the rear of the ecu. There are 2 connector blocks the cut wire is pin 16 i think in the left block.

Squid i get about 120 to a tank, and have never backfired. What chip are you running??

Do the airbox mod, do the collector mod and get a gabro f255 chip ... Awesome !

As far as I'm aware, I'm running the stock chip. Which airbox mod are you referring to? And what is a collector? lol

The bike backfires if I hold it at the same (usually moreso at low revs) revs for a while, and judders forwards and backwards a bit while doing so.
If I blip the throttle and close it completely after, depending on how hard I blip it, I get two or three satisfying pops from the exhaust. Those, I like, but if they're a problem they can go too? :)
 
Sounds like you have a misfire occurring with that judder, mine did this for a while, so badly that it became scary going around islands. Griff had a quick play with the tbs at a suspension set up day and its been good since.

Thanks for the reply. I'm gonna have to get Mr Griff to have a once over of my girl at some point.
Short of cash at the minute though :(.
 
I need to get my TBs set up properly, been meaning to for ages but finding time to take it to Grifflaah is proving to be a mission. If I remember right TB set up is about sixty quid from the man.
 
I get about 110-120 miles from full tank to light coming on. A little less if I`m ragging it. I think I worked it out to be about 10 miles to a litre or 46 to the gallon on average. If my maths is correct. I don`t think that is too thirsty for a litre sports bike. Used same method as Claude stated earlier.
 
I've used Claude's method to determine tank range on my Mille, I've also learned to stay much lower down in the rpm range. Now I don't scream it at 7000 everywhere, I'm getting about 100 miles before the fuel light comes on. :)

I think it's cos I was just riding it in the wrong gears, being used to the RS250's need to be screamed everywhere.

Tried that method myself, unfortunately my speedo sensor has stopped working at a guesstimate I reckon I got around 100 to 15.5 litres
