Fitted a back brake pump heat deflector on my 2004R yesterday. All went well and set the brake up just fine - I thought.

Nice early run on the country roads this morning when suddenly the engine felt as though it was towing something heavy. Slowed to a halt and found I couldn't move the bike - back break was locked on solid.
Let it cool down as I didn't have the 10mm spanner necessary to do a fix. It unlocked and I rode home and have now given the brake pedal a lot more play.

Am new to these little Aprilias and, from what I read, must be the only person to have one whose back brake works!
:exclamation

How did you manage to get that to happen. I only use my back brake in town traffic to control the bike when slow filtering or approaching traffic lights. Other than that it's pretty much useless

i had mine back into the garage where i bought it from when it was still under warranty, they got my rear brake to work turned out to be the rod attached to the pistion the nut had come loose, they over tightened and the same thing happened to me 5 mins down the road brake locking up etc, cooled down got it to the garage they adjusted the rod n happy days!

:ranthappened twice to me, bike stopped middlke of road had to man handle to side of road stripped marster cylinder nothing untoward only solution was to have plenty of play at lever, now reluctant to use it

same happened to mine had to crack off the nipple and pump out some fluid (oohh err)did this twice decieded to sort it so bled it back up and adjusted the rod working rear brake and no locking up on its own

Been there done that!:thumbup
Take the caliper off, hang it upside down from the exhaust hanger so that the bleed nipple is at the highest point of the system and bleed away.
I still ride with the brake pedal backed right off (don't use it anyway) coz i don't wanna be left stranded in the middle of a country lane again.

You get this problem if you have too little play on the master cylinder pushrod.
You should have at least 5mm movement from rest to when the pushrod hits the piston.

Yup, I've now learnt this lesson. Have got the correct movement and no more scary moments. Interestingly I've got a really good back brake now. Can't quite lock the wheel but it can slow me down a lot. Notice the MotoGP brigade use their back brake a lot to rub off speed when entering a corner rather hot or to stop wheelies. Just call me the new Vale!
