Unlucky and very lucky!

Riding home down the A52 today and the chain broke away and smashed into the wheel, chain guard, rear fairing, under tray and also launched the seat cowl off the bike!

It was an almighty bang, thankfully the chain didn't get caught up and lock the back wheel and I managed to get over into the other lane and eventually pull onto a bit of concrete that was a bridge.
I rang the police and my mate who was riding in front and saw nothing.....luckily the police came at the same time.as my mate returned with the bike trailer and we loaded it safely, while the officer closed the inside lane. The officer was a biker too and a top guy and gave me a lift back home....It wasn't far though.

So I need to repair the bike, when funds allow but at least I can put that new chain and sprockets on I've been thinking about lol.

I think the old chain on the bike must of not liked the battering it's been getting on the track.....probably didn't do it any favours!


Can you recommend any chains Aldo?....heavy duty ones....and sprocket makes.
 
not good mate :no as for chains and sprockets theres lots of threads on here but the usual suspects seem to be renthal and DID and sprockets renthal, talon and supasprox :thumbup

You were very lucky , had a guy riding near where i live die as a result of his chain breaking . its alway a worry when i put on new chain on my bikes ....... did i do properly etc etc .
glad your ok though
 
Just ordered a new chain from B and C in Lincolnshire, someone on here recommended them. ...also got some new rental sprockets coming....1 less on the front, 2 more on the rear.

It's a heavy duty tsubsshi X ring jobby.

All parts now purchased through eBay and B and C accessories..

£478 out of pocket but once the last things arrive it will be great to get her out and about again!

Lucky boy.

My original chain (what was on there when I bought it 2nd hand) broke when pulling away from some lights. I wasn't giving it any, but it let go and kinked as it pulled around the front sprocket. Punched the clutch slave cylinder off the engine casing and peeled the motor open. 8 weeks waiting for new engine cases and a hefty rebuild cost = me a very unhappy bunny.
I'd been really careful with maintenance, so can only put it down to wear and tear. Got myself a Scottoiler now as a precaution (lovely little things!).
My advice to everyone out there - if you don't know how well it's been looked after, change it for a new one!
 
I've also remembered what the mot tester said to me last year...which was " your bike has passed, it's in great condition for its age, the only thing I've found was the chain link has been put on the wrong way round....It could come away if it got caught...so I've turned it round for you"

I thought, ooh that was nice of him..but now I'm thinking that he should of just told me it was fitted incorrectly and left it the **** alone!
It was like that when I bought it and I had no idea it was the wrong way round....I never thought to check.

Reading your story, makes me realise how lucky I was....yours did all that damage at low speed!
 
Well seriously that's what he said!

My new chain is a riveted link....but I couldn't tell you if the old one was....It certainly wasn't a DID looking gold chain to be honest.
 
Noticed the chain has also knackered the seat lock barrel, on its way up through the fairing and under tray :-(

Any ideas on what I should do about replacing it....Go for new or ebay?

Warning thread hijack... Slippy, where did you route the oiler? - mine keeps getting air bubbles in and only oils one side of the chain.
