Snapped chain

When.mynold chain snapped it tore through the back of the bike after taking a chunk out of the rear wheel, wrecking the chain guard and hugger and then the under tray, side rear fairing, and seat cowl ....oh and even the lock for the cowl too!

I was very lucky and it missed me but I check my chain alot more nowdays!

Good spotting there mate...it's a shame you've got to buy a new one but at least it's limited to a chain and sprockets!

Like the arm torque techniques... and japery.

Of course amount of muscle power needs to vary depending on length of wrench. One has to be a seasoned mechanic to get that right 100% of the time! :) But allowing that alloy front shock mounting plate can crack if overtorqued, the good old torque wrench has it's place, especially for those of us that haven't calibrated our arm muscles as well as the more seasoned mechanics amongst us :thumbup

Pretty sure over or under-torquing rear wheel nuts can't be a good either! :bawling

Well.... following on from from my earlier "reservations" about the DID 525 VX Chain, I have now logged a complaint with the importer regarding the suitability of this chain for a Tuono.
Have to take it back to the dealer for inspection next week & they have to contact the importer with the results.
Won't say any more at this stage but will post up the outcome.
:(

UPDATE:

After a visit to the supplying dealer / shop - (Woosters on the A64 Leeds) they inspected the chain and rang the Importers (Maxxis International UK PLC) while i was there.
Maxxis, who i must say, showed fook all interest in it, requested that the chain be sent back to them for inspection. They (Maxxis) refused to talk directly to me at this point "for legal reasons" (i assume that is because i did not buy it directly from them).

Just to be clear, This chain was recommended to me by Maxxis - Not Wooster's !

Anyhow, long story short - Wooster's kindly agreed to give me a refund "regardless".

I removed the chain and returned it this morning and left with a full refund - Hats off to Wooster's !

For the record, "IMHO" the DID 525 VX chain is not suitable for a Tuono 1000.

Interestingly, although many main "online" box shifters clearly recommend this chain for a Tuono (as well as the official importer Maxxis Uk) - This contradicts the official DID website..... Which states that this chain is NOT suitable for bikes over 900CC.

F. Knowing what you are like at getting the coffee in ( and Mr b for that matter ) I'm very surprised you didn't cobble something together out of cable ties and baler band !! :yes

After an initial adjustment, I've done 1k miles keeping up with Giles (hey that rhymes) and it's not needed any adjustment.

So that's a DID 525 gold chain with JT sprockets. Lots of lube to be fair. And 700 Plus miles was done in 2 days.

It was reasonable pace, but not track day speed or anything like that...

So... what's the difference between a DID 525 'Gold' and 525 "VX"? I presume the former is heavier duty... at least.

You can get a DID 525 VX chain in black or gold.... Tiz the same chain.

From DID site:

525 VX - MAX 900CC - Value chain

525 ZVM-X - MAX 1300CC - Super Strong / long lasting.

Tiz the letters you need to look at.
One is around £75... the other is around £100

Glad yours is OK. ... maybe mine was a duff one ?

Wish I was Mr B...

Should have my last *** next Tuesday, so hopefully fit to ride a few days after that...

torque wrenches are for ******* just calibrate your right arm F

I've worked for years on bikes & cars...tractors too even.
But you can't beat using a decent torque wrench.
Problem is, some cnuts have no idea of what's tight.....and what's undertight.
Typical example of why I always use a TW are the Ohlins forks lower axle pinch bolts.

My ex brother in law was a gearbox tech for caterpillar.
He used to build/service the gearbox/engine packs for a whole range of military vehicles.
Challenger tanks/Abrams/Volvo etc...some of it real high tech stuff.
He reconed he had a pretty good arm for guessing the old torques....truth was, even after 20 years, he was still stripping ****.
Not very often....but still stripping none the less.
Those that never use a torque wrench are taking the lazy way out.
Just my 2 penneth like...
