Turns Will Not Start

06:00 this morning cranks over as usual but will not catch. Started to run battery down after (a) choke only with no accelerator, (b) choke plus accelerator, (c) accelerator only. Serves me right for gettting into my leathers before trying to start the damn thing :uhoh

Rode last week so battery fine (?) BUT it it did take 2nd attempt at starting last week.

Any ideas folks? My plan is to find the battery and jump off of my car battery to see if it starts.

Initial thoughts are battery but then there is the sprag (no grinding noise), tilt sensor (not dropped), sidestand/gear (in neutral), petrol (£10 in tank before parked up last week).

try starting with the throttle held completely open....it maybe flooded.this technique helps it catch and start.dont leave it open though for too long if it does start.....you need to have the cold start open to or it will just die straight as you let the throttle off.

Don't try and jump it off a car please you could fry the ecu. Get the battery on charge make sure you turn your lights off and try again if it still won't start try the open throttle method also worth trying sitting on the bike side stand up in first gear just incase there is a problem with the sidestand etc.

Hi, if you connect the car battery to the bike before you switch on the bike ignition, there shouldn't be a problem. After all, a car battery is exactly the same voltage as the bike only a bigger capacity ;)

However, you could get a spike if the car engine is running and the bike is switched on and you suddenly touch the leads onto the bike battery, then you'll get a sudden jump to about 14v which the ECU might not be too happy about!

Have a spare (car) battery that I was going to connect for the extra oomph. Your points are noted and very valid. I dread what the CCA is on my 3L diesel, can hardly lift the beast out of the boot :exclamation

I am making a list of all suggestions, so feel free to contribute.

(Yamaha Solenoid is £33+VAT with 3 day delivery, if I end up needing one).

i recon its the batt on the way out, it may read ok on load, but if after work hours outside ect, it wont start its prolly that, they can fail without warning, mines doing the same at mo, gonna get a new batt.

All of us should have gathered for a "group buy".

Confused by the battery thread on the site but this may help
  1. YTX12-BS @ £34.12inc - charges at 10Ah
  2. YTX14-BS @ £38.82inc - charges at 12Ah but 16mm taller
there is a price reduction if you order thro their www

Not sure of advertising rules but you could ring 01623 757377.

Let us know your outcome, as others will probably benefit also.

I had this problem last week.

Turned over very well but not start. I whipped out the 12 amp battery put in a spare one (14 amps) from my other Mille and it started 1st prod.

They need a lot juice (amps).

Check your plug gaps dude, all 4 of them as they need all the help they can get with those compression ratios, mine was a right pig to start till I checked the gaps and found them a tad on the wide side, once adjusted she fires first time now, most people dont check the gap on brand new plugs and assume that they are ok !!!!,just think about trying to spin that bloody big V twin lump over with the smallest battery Aprilia could get away with AND fire four bloody HT coils ,also check your fast idle gap setting, the back stop under the air box on the throttle linkage

Sorry, long day at work. Plan to get back early tomorrow and try some of your recommendations.

Could go into the garage now BUT if she starts, will have to go for a ride :inlove

:thumbup thanks for help.

Parked next to the diesel and it jump started first time.

Then had to go for a ride - roads greasy and a bit of rear wheel steering woke me up :biggrin

Leaving it alone for a couple of days (maybe) and if fails to statrt - then will buy a new battery.
