Hi guys.
I tried to start the mille last week and she wouldn't have it, I had to leave it an hour, treat the fuel and heat the casings up and give it a fistful before it fired up. Took her out for a good run then left her for a week before again having trouble again today, holding the throttle wide open before she would start. I know this is no good for the dreaded sprag!
Its not a charging issue, She has a new Motobatt 14amp battery with all charging mods done, 150amp starter solenoid etc and kept on an optimate.
The fuel is super and has been in there a few months but as mentioned i stuck some Silkoline FST in it just incase.
The plugs are only 5 months and 400 miles old so wouldn't have though they would be the problem but i will take them out for a look if the problem persists.
No dodgy sprag noises and when she runs she runs well.
13700 miles on her and all services done.
Ive never had a starting issue before, i done all the charging mods to stop it ever happening and to make the sprag last longer.
Apart from plugs is there anything else i should be looking at to sort it? I don't want to f*!k my sprag by having to start her like this every time.
Regards,
Simon.

Maybe check your wiring mods with a multimeter to see that you have good connections???

Brown connecter mod has been done, new airfilter fitted. I took it out today and it was fine, hardly needed any choke from cold then no choke thereafter, im hoping it just didnt like not being used, ill be starting it up once a week now untill spring.

I start the RSV once week and run until the fans cut in a minimum of 2 times , never have issues when doing it like this , Oh and thats on a 3 year old 190cca 10amp battery :biggrin

Hey Mate, I've had the same problem. I even had the same battery. Things is, if she's starting intermittent it's the sprag clutch. If you've done all the other mods, it's time for the sprag. It will work off and on, until it's just toast. I had mine replaced and not the flywheel either. If the mechanic doesn't damage the flywheel when he heats it, to get to the sprag. It should still be usable. My bike starts now, like its eager. It's like a new bike.

Had trouble again today, held it right open again. Im not getting any slipping or dodgy sounds from the sprag, i hope its not that i could do without the cost

Replace sprag. If stator, regulator, solenoid, batt, and starter are all fine, there's only one culprit SPRAG IS SPRUNG!

For the reliability and peace of mind, it's totally worth the money to fix it right. It's just as reliable as a jap bike, when the sprag is healthy.

How are you trying to start it ? - sounds a silly question I know but worth asking.

Have you any other mod's on the bike ?

i do not understand what you all are always talking about "how to do the starting"? it has to start by pressing the starter button in neutral. end of story. no tricks. if it does not start that way, you have a problem and you wont solve it by a workaround or by doing some voodoo magic procedure in front of your bike

You obviously are very lucky or do not own a Gen 1.......you cannot start a Gen 1 just by pressing the starter button or on the throttle alone.

fast idle fully on
no throttle
press start
once fired up reduce fast idle to about half way of it's travel

My first bike the 2000' mille was perfect. Bought brand new. It sat most of the summer but started every single time. I never had issue. Then 13 yrs later, I bought the same bike. Second 2000' mille was hell, to start. It had 20,000 miles on it and the guy tracked her. I had to do full electrical tune up and sprag. After that it was golden. If it's not automatically starting, if it's intermittent, you need sprag check out bro.

All ways start mine the same way from cold - about 1/4 fast idle, no throttle, press
if the engine is vagly warm then no fast idle just press and go.

I never us much fast idle as I hate the engine reving high when cold, I try to keep it below 2.5k or even 2k if possible
