Track day noise limits??

does any one have details of how they test the dB at track days.

I can get a sound level meter from Uni but need details of distance, rev range etc etc.
I have read it is either 0.5 or 1m away at a 45 degree angle and 2/3 or 3/4 max revs, so i guess 7 or 8000 rpm for us but this tends to be on car forums. Any have a definite set of measures?

Or, as i have the full Akro pipes, is there really any point measuring it?? Are track days out of reach due to noise limits?:bawling

Its usualy about 100-105 db's. They put a microthingy at the back end and you steady rev to about 6k revs. My Quills past at dead on 104db which is what Oulton allows. Akras are ok with the baffles in and probably ok without. Depends on tester a bit, whether he got a shag the night before. Their all a bit different and you only really get a noise limit if the track is near housing.
Tbh some have a spare set of quiete zorst for tracks.

cheers Nob, i see many tracks are 105 dB, but i'd like to check before signing up. Never done a track day before but I can see a few in the future.
Got leathers on the way specially for it.

that's what raised the question in my mind Dynamo but i can't make March unfortunately.

Just read that Castle Combe, which is the closest track to me, has a 105dB limit measured at 0.5m and 45 degrees, so i may just take a ride down there and get them to measure it. Good excuse for a trip out.

Cheers

i've just read further and found that they have a list of standard bikes that fail the noise test, standard for fooks sake. DOH

Suzuki GSXR600
Suzuki GSXR600 K6
GSXR 750 K6 & K7
GSXR1000 K6 – 2006 model with standard exhaust
Yamaha R6 – 2006 model
Yamaha R1 – 2009 model
Honda CBR1000RR – 2008 model

Smiffy, I've got Akra' slip-ons with baffles out. Been to Brands where they are v. noise sensitive. Tested @ 70000rpm and passed every time with a 105db reading.

Smiffy - I have the Aprilia Ti Race cans, louder than Akra's and they pass the noise test at Cadwell (105dB)

My old 07 GSXR750 did sound nice with the stock can so it never got changed

I had my RSV at the local tuners and he reckoned [by ear] my cored and shortened cans would easily pass a 105db test

But they do sound loud so im still a bit worried so the wifes tuono cans will be coming with me

good news indeed. Not had chance to have a play on her yet as still no ins. docs to get tax. :thumbdown

Not even had a chance to get in the garage and have a look see if she's had the airbox mod. I'm guessing there's no way to tell if map2 is being used other than a trip to a diagnostics computer.

I might just get it dynod and see how its running before deciding on where to go. Have to say i'm far from a fast paced racer but i do like my bikes to run and sound sweet. I'm never gonna see the benefit of a few or even 10 extra horse power but if it gives a nice exhaust note and induction suck it'll make me smile every time i twist that wrist.:burnout

It's always the IL4s that fail. One of my pals is a sound engineer in music industry. He told me they use the wrong form of db measurement to catch out the twins. I'd love to explain why but my brain switched off about 30 seconds in

i know how that feels, i'm a analytical chemist and hate it when people ask what i do. Seeing someone feign interest in the answer and then excuse themselves is never great. I wouldn't mind but they asked. I used to just say oh i'm a chemist but got bored with being asked if i worked in Boots.

It's a very easy thing to check. Remove the riders & pillion seats and look for a cut blue/green wire at the front of the ECU. ISTR it's No. 13. This switches the ECU onto map 2 on the Tuoldo.

Next job, undo the two bolts at the front of the fuel tank and lift it. If the top is still on the airbox it's standard. An Evo airbox will have a seal around the airbox lower half, the Rene type will have a carbon fibre plate with a PiperX foam filter.

With it have the Akra 2+2 exhaust I would be gobsmacked if the bike is still on Map1.

There should be a stainless steel tank prop clipped under the rear seat - it holds the tank up for you, for longer jobs.

Re the airbox.
A lot just take the restrictor collar out and fit a K&N type filter. Not noisey but better than the standard gig. Me Falco's like that at the mo.

The split fuse type thing with the 2 green and white wires in and the green and blue one is for the diagnostics btw. If you do go mooching they are supposed to be apart.

thanks for that BF and Nob. Got my ins docs so went for a ride to get my tax, i'm loving the V-twin.
Bit of a culture shock when compared to the Z1000 though, never had that on one wheel so easily and it never felt as planted as the Tuono, and that's with the ragged tyres that are on it at the moment. New tyres to come, any suggestions?

front end seems a bit stiff over the bumps and there's a bit of a click/knock when pushing bike forward and snapping the brake on. I'll get it looked at when i get new tyres next weekend. After the quick play this afternoon i also very much doubt it has had the airbox mod judging by the noise, or lack of.

Better not bloody snow now, that will really piss me off.

mine wont rev anywhere near 70000 rpm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mine wouldn't rev past 6000 rpm when i got it but that was because it had lost power from the battery at some point and reset to original factory values, rev limiter at 6000 rpm and speed in kmh not mph. Are you getting a red flashing light on your dash when you hit 6000 rpm? Or does the needle only go round to 6000rpm when you switch on, this, from what i have read, is what the rev limiter is set to.
Just need to reset the rev limiter if that's the case.

bought my 04 with apparently 18567 miles on the clock, which is shown on the MOT certificate. Unfortunately for the form but fortunately for me, that was actually in kilometres not miles so now i have an 11000ish 04 Tuono.:thumbup
