Thinking just Thinking about an 1198 S

Some interesting comments - thanks guys :thumbup. I have spoken to two dealers now trying to get a price to change - neither has come back to me yet. Find that odd but maybe they are selling so fast they don't want my money :dunno. I will try both, the 1198 and 848 as a lot of people I have spoken to say the 848 is a better road bike which is where it will be most of the time. This is definitely a heart not a head decision as there is no logic in owning such a machine, but there ya go, you only come this way once. Must say the 04/08 Mille Factory looks sweet :banghead

Try Steve at Ducati Aylesbury.

I had a similar experience trying to buy a Factory and an 848. Steve made the difference really by offering a sensible trade in and a good price on the 848. Plus a big discount on the add ons.

I did test ride a 1098 as 1198 wasn't out at the time and found the 848 more useable. Yes the 1098 had the wow factor as your roared away from the lights but i would imagine on a twisty road or wet conditions it would be more of a handful.

You need to ditch the oem cans to get them running sweetest though as per the Aprilia's as well.

My only gripe with mine is clock misting. Which i think i might have cured (need to test) otherwise been solid so far.

Flick's right, the longer you leave the oil in, the more it matures, like a fine wine.

That's just an excuse for being a tight arse. :nana

I'm suprised you don't hang around the back of KFC and put the old frying oil in there.
With the excuse that my bike smells like a nice chicken wing when i ride it that's why i do it, not because i'm tighter than a nuns do daa.

Do you have any furry pizza in the fridge too ?

Great idea Spoonz, thanks!

Would that make it a Goldwing?

Don't get me started on our fridge!
The missus, gawd bless her, was brought up in 1970s Taiwan when they had to queue up for their family rice ration so she hates wasting food. She'll buy anything with an orange 'out of date' sticker on it from our local Co-op and stuffs it in the fridge. Unfortunatly, it's a tall fridge freezer and she's only short so stuff on the upper shelves tends to get forgotten. Then I find it weeks later when I'm rummaging around on the top shelf for a beer and come out with a handful of something indescribable.
She's just taken the kids back East for a while so I'll be detoxing the fridge with a shovel and a jet washer!

i had a 2008 1098 base model that i spent a fortune on. the power of the duke with the full termi system is a bit on the scary side (front trying to lift in 4th at 140),i found that a slipper clutch was a must on this bike but that could just be down to my riding (never owned a bike without one),the handling is slow to tip in needing alot of rider input but once on its side it feels like you can just take your hands off and it will go round the corner itself. compared to my rsv the dukes engine is in a diffrent league for outright performance but the rsv's is more useable on the road, handling wise i prefer the rsv as it turns in faster and takes alot less effort, before i upgraded the suspension on the duke (k-tech fork revalve, ohlins ttx rear shock) the standard stuff was very soft and the bike would tend to push wide on the exit of corners, i never had any problems with my duke and servicing seemed very reasonable, the fasteners for the bodywork did corode very easily though and the powder coating on the frame looked patchy in places after a few thousand miles. i loved my 1098 but i dont feel they justify the price of buying the bike when you look at how much more you have to spend to release the bikes full potential.

Sima07, I've got to ask...

Why did you let it go and what did you change it for?

Your 1098 sounds gorgeous and gives me a semi just thinking about it.... I realise that money always comes into it as I recently had to sell my pride and joy to pay a lump off the credit card.

Was it financial reasoning or just boredom/fancied a change/didn't like it?

Finally had a reply from Andrew at Moto Rapido, Winchester, will call me later today with some figures. :biggrin Beginning to wonder if I am up to riding this monster of a machine :doug

If your having a test ride don't show it your scared or it'll bite your *** :biggrin ring it's fecking neck and take it back smoking :thumbup

Try an 848. For all the reason above i went for the 848 rather than the bigger brother after test riding them

Thinner 5.5 rims/tyres so has the quick turn in of the rsv etc with about the same power as an rsv.
There is a fair difference in price between the 2 as well. it's not a good time to be buying though as prices have hiked due to exchange rate.

The 848 is the fastest selling sports twin ever. must be doing something right.
Moto Rapido have a very good rep by the way (if a little costly. workshop wise)

The 848 does seem the sensible option and at the price could add some nice extras to :thumbup. Will wait to hear from the dealer, take a test ride and see. Really appreciate all the advice :)

i couldnt really justify having that much money tied up in a bike knowing that i might have to lay off lads who work for me due to a slow up in work. so i sold the duke and thats now coverd there wages for 3 months.

Well well I have finally been out and had a spin on the 1198S and 848. A big thank you to Parkinson Motorcycles of Colchester :biggrin:biggrin

Let me say first of all I am no riding god and in the main I like to keep to the speed limits as far as 30 - 40 and 50 go. I will 'nick a bit' when I can at other times but try not to take the piss :nana. I took the 848 out first taking in town and country roads as well as a bit of dual carriageway. The bike was comfortable and felt 'good' overall she had more than enough power and handled well. A very capable, lovely bike. Then came the 1198S! I was a bit worried about this one but as it turned out I needn't have been. Felt much the same except more engine and brake power, also a bit heavier. Felt equally easy to ride, again a lovely bike.

Ok I want one the question remains which one to buy. Money isn't the issue, though like all of us I look for value and try to weigh up my real world needs against what my ego and heart are telling me to do.

To be quiet honest I am leaning towards the 848 purely based on the fact that, for me, it is a better all round road bike!! if it was on looks and brute power the 1198 would win - no question :thumbup I am still not totally sure but one thing I do know is that a Ducati will be in my garage soon..........

Hope to keep my lovely Mille to :thumbup

Well reading your review i would say the 848 is the one for you :thumbup

Although you may at a later stage wish you had bought the bigger one after you get used to the 848 :biggrin

The choice is yours fella, but if i was able to afford either without any issues, and thought they both were equally ok for my riding style then i'd get the 1198s :pirate

In white tho' :devious

Dam you Sir for giving the a reason to buy the 1198S :angry. You do have a point though :dunno

Parkinson's have bid me a good price for my GS Adv so won't be long :biggrin

I think it's gonna come down to personal preference and which bike you feel comfortable with if money is no object.

When i got my bike my thought process was the 1098 was quite brutal and i could have the 848 fully kitted out with Termi's, ecu and some bling for the price of a base 1098.

The 1198 is a little different though as i'm reliably told Ducati made the motor much more user friendly despite it having more power on paper. Were i testing them now i might see it different.
Having said that i feel i can ride the 848 as it was intended and do it justice. Not sure i could have with the 1098 in anything but ideal conditions. 127bhp as mine is putting out in 180Kg package is more than enough for me personally. I also don't like dry clutches, but that's just me.

The only thing i would say is the 1198s is the only nice looking 1198 colour wise. The black frame on the base model in red looks tacky and i don't like the white myself.

Whatever you do factor in a DP ecu and some cans because the bike is transformed with them fitted and that exhaust valve is open all the time with the DP ecu. The termi's come with baffles if you want to be nice to your neighbours.

Today is the day:biggrin Still not sure which way I will jump but deep down am leaning towards one bike? Speak later and thanks to all for your advice :thumbup

Pick up my new bike next Saturday. Ordered the 1198S, the reason? well nothing to do with the speed etc just knew at some stage down the line would have wished I had so I did. Thanks again guys for your posts :thumbup Now all Ive got to do is fine a decent Ducati Forum?
