The Official "I HATE APRILIA......"

T

TinMan

I am the founding member of the "I HATE APRILIA BECAUSE THEY BUILD SUCH GREAT BIKES TO RIDE BUT SO DAMN FRUSTRATING IN EVERY OTHER WAY FAN CLUB".
Well, as you might have guessed, more problems, Decided to check to see if the bike had restrictors in the exhaust headers, easy I thought, whack the fairing off, couple of bolts and bobs someone elses uncle. I should have known better from previous experience! So far got the fairing off, can off and thats about it. ?Haynes says I gotta take the oil cooler off and oil tank, along with various brackets. and thats just for the front one. To add to my woes, the nuts are so rusted they are completely mishapen, got 2 of em to loosen up, but the 3rd has started to round off now. O, so thats the previous owners fault, not aprilias I admit)
Really I need to take off the whole radiator/fan system to get some good access to it and have a proper go, but I dont ahve a garage and am a bit wary of having it in bits and not getting it back together again in time.
Not even looked at the back one as looks even harder to get access too!

Every other bike I've worked on its been so easy to work on in comparison, i can see why the mechanic I was talking a while back to said he hated italian bikes now! It's almost as if they deliberately try to make it as much as a pin in the chuff to work on as possible, must have a whole department dedicated to it.
Anyway, rant over. Will take a break, then go back outside and stare at it some more (whilst listening to next doors even more annoying pest alarm ringing non stop in my ears!)

tinman, unfortuantely i think you have been misinformed fella. There are no restrictors in the exhaust headers and never have been. The standard single end exhaust can of the earlier shape pre 2003.5 RSV mille and Mille R had a cone tack welded inside the link pipe that was easily removeable and a plastic restrictor plate in the airbox, again easily removeable. The exhaust derestiction only applies if you keep the standard end can as a new race end can come with a link pipe.

You can then activate the 2nd full power MAP by carrying out the wire snip to the ECU

The newer shape 2004 RSVR and Factory are not restricted in any way. Only MAP2 needs activating when race cans are fitted

ok, cool, at least I dont have to waste time trying to get the bolts off then! Although it does rule out yet another possibility. Got another eprom chip on the way from a very nice man incase mine is duff.
Wire is cut on ecu, hooked air filter, no restrictor bolt on the throttle pulley, is getting annoying not knowing what it could be. Maybe its just a slow bike..... The runt of the factory litter.

Just noticed you track a Gixxer thou,an Ape will feel slow after one of them it's a rather deceptive kind of power rather than an I4 kind of rush.

Well down the bottom of the rev range it seems ok, although no better than a standard geared aprilia despite having a 16t on the front, but the real difference is when it gets to about 9000rpm, my mates standard mille seemed to hit a bit of a powerband and gave an extra surge, mine is just dying out by that point.
She tops out at about 150 (private roads of course!) but takes ages getting there although top speed isnt really an issue to me, but the extra power along the rev range would be nice!

Hi Ian, I only tracked the gixer once, she went due to house re-mortgage payments! I've had the aprilia since my gsxr600k2, and it isnt any quicker than that, I know cos my mate has it. But the real noticible difference came when I rode my mates standard mille (bar can) the other night, different animal.

Sorry to hear of your woes TinMan, I think I maybe eligible to join your club too :biggrin

With the beasties you have to learn to short shift to keep in the torque curve, I have the twin plug small valve motor and it gets very
asthmatic the closer I get to max revs so I tend to change just after 9000 rpm (9200 if memory serves me).

Although I have not had the beastie dynoed I would expect some where around 118 - 122 bhp (that would be a pretty good number for my type of engine)

I run 16/44 gearing , Hooked Airbox & Dr Rossi chip

Hmm, sounds very much like mine Kiwi. Although mine should have the later motor being an 03. It has 2 plugs per cylinder? As I said though, its not really anymore powerful than my old 600 and she was 109bhp. I would send it to the garage for a dyno setup but just changed mortgage companies and the gits took me for every penny (and more, hence the no more trackbike. I had so the purse strings are very tightly wrapped for now!

If you invert the wires it results in a ignition ******.
I thought front coil is front spark. (center Sparkplug)
Can anyone confirm that.

I can sympathise with you,I think mine is suffering from the same thing, has an impressive mid range but seems overly soft in the higher revs. This is one reason I want to get Griff on the case as he could probably ride it and know where to tweak immediately.

I'm overdue for the valve clearance check and wondering if the useless Ape dealer that's been in charge of past servicing has EVER checked them. I'm almost certain they haven't as their criteria for checking them is ' nah mate, don't need checking, they're nice and quiet !'

Hopefully over the winter everything will get sorted tho'

Generally I can hold my own against anything I ride with short of a mates 1098s, but this week I had a bit of a struggle to hold a good SP1, I was starting to find the limits, both mine and the bikes.

Nothing that a couple of trips to Griffs and Maxtons won't cure I'm sure.

As for me,I'll just have to except that I'm slow and concentrate on being SMOOTH and slow. LOL

Never realised that,is it obvious from the lead length if it's correct?

I don't thinks so, more the position of the sparkplug in the head.

Uh. Dedcided that I would check the actual spark plug electrode, pulling off the ht lead cap and was proving a tad difficult, all of a sudden it came off, leaving its connector still stuck on the sparkplug, cant get it back on now........ Definately think I am gonna sell this curs'ed machine and get me another one ready for next year!

Glad I could help !! :eatcorn

Relax some lube and a pair of plyers will fix it.
The connector has a treat in it so you can screw it back together.
