Suspension Setup

Had the suspension done, and wow. what a difference, defo worth doing. :thumbup

Agree. Even at the low speeds I travel at I can really tell the difference. Bike feels much smoother and composed.

Hi guys, went to see what settings my suspension was at today but the rear compression screw doesn't seem to 'click' when I turn it?!! Anyone know how many turns out it should be? Maybe I'm just not feeling the 'click' ???

There is no click on the rear compression. 1 and 1/2 turns out from fully in is where mine is at

Any body know of someone near Sheffield or Chesterfield. Would love to get mine set up properly.

Found this fellow ALPHA SUSPENSION SET-UP - Welcome who seems to get good reviews, he's even set up a V4R for someone called Ryan, maybe he's on here? Does an online suspension review too if you cant get to him (like me whos in the middle of the north sea :bigsmile)
Aprilia Tuono V4R
Had a good ride on the Tuono today. Suspension, especially the rear is much improved. Thanks for your help. Regards, Ryan

Whilst were on the subject, any one know what the front and rear sag should be set to? Cheers.

I adjust my suspension on all my bikes , thats wot all the adjusters are for , makes a huge difference when you find the sweet spot !!

After reading this thread I went for the "Online setup" from here http://www.alphasuspensionset-up.co.uk/On-Line-Set-Up. the bike;s handling is much improved.

The standard settings were far too hard for me and set more for trackdays, my rear sag was 13mm, which was way too stiff for road riding.

This bloke knows his stuff, you do the work and measurements, he will give you settings to try for your weight and riding style, money well spent for me.

+1 for alphasuspension. I used for my previous bike,a 954 blade. It was awful if it hit a bump mid corner /was unsettled when cranked over. An email conversation was done and it transformed the bike. Ideally i would of visited directly but was too far to travel and alpha suspension came highly recommended. Wouldnt hesitate using the same service again if needed. Im a bit of a novice when it comes to suspension [emoji4]

Everybodys riding style is different so we all like different settings, the V4 Tuono suspension is set pretty stiff from the factory.

As a general guide for road riding :- Front sag window 35- 43 mm Rear sag window 30-38mm, If you do track days then you should stiffen up the suspension

As you can see in my previous post my bike came from the shop with 13mm rear sag

I have used alpha too.

My settings were a little out and far too harsh for road riding.

I now have rider sag set at42 front and 39 rear and it handles really well.

It holds a line through fast twisties and side to side transition is spot on with the bonus that I no longer looses teeth when riding a bumpy road like the A93 Blairgowrie to Glenshee [emoji106]

I weigh 88kg nekked and the above is spot on for me.

Its good to know what others are set at, right now Im at 39mm Front and 52mm Rear, thats really soft on the rear but going to try 42-44 today, in full gear I weigh 90kgs.

The sachs rear spring on the V4 is very stiff, for the 52mm rear sag I'm only 1.5 turns clockwise on the rear spring preload, but I like the softer settings

Can you guys post your front and rear Rider SAG, rebound and compression settings. Mine is set to:

Front:
Rider SAG set to 36mm
Ride Height: 3 lines showing
Rebound: 4 clicks out from full hard
Compression: 7 clicks out from full hard

Rear:
Rider SAG set to 32mm
Rebound: 14 clicks out from full hard
Compression: 2.25 turns out from full hard

Running Super Corsa SP's tires. Bike handles great. I weight about 190lbs/86kg.

Front

Rider sag 42mm

Rebound 12 clicks from fully in

Compression 9 clicks from fully in

Fork height two rings showing above top yoke

Rear

SAG 38 mm

Rebound 19 clicks from fully in

Compression two full turns from fully in.

Running Metzeler M7rr, bike handles extremely well without being overly harsh.

Body weight 88kg nekked.

These settings are MY preference only, I like soft suspension and I've been working with Alpha Suspension to get these settings to my taste as I don't have the skills to do this myself, these settings go against the grain on a V4 Tuono, riding on standard settings I've only done a couple of thousand miles but had to get the suspension sorted. I've been blown away with the performance of this bike, even the standard exhaust sound is awesome, I'm going for the factory model later this year.

Front:
Rider SAG set to 39mm
Fork Height: 2 lines showing above yokes (standard setting)
Spring Preload: Hexagonal nut (Range 40 1/4 turns or 10 Full turns) I've got this 90% off, i.e 1 turn in clockwise (this is an extremely soft setting)
Rebound Damping: Centre of left fork (Range 18 clicks clockwise to fully on) I've got this at 12 clicks in, 6 from fully in
Compression Damping : Centre of right fork (Range 18 clicks clockwise to fully on) I've got this at 12 clicks in also

Rear:
Rider SAG now set to 46mm (Soft)
Rebound: (Range 30 clicks clockwise to fully out) got this set at 19 turns in (anti-clockwise)
Compression: (Range 3 turns or 12 1/4 turns) got this at 2 turns in or 8 1/4 turns clockwise (on)
Spring preload : Only got this at 2 turns in, from the shop it was 8 turns in (clockwise) which gave a rear sag of 13mm, felt like a racing ducati setup :dunno

Running the Diablo Corsa standard tires, 32psi front 36 psi rear, suited and booted 90kgs but, I'm on a diet.....honest :yes

Looking at Rizla's sag settings, they seem more in line for this beast of a machine :thumbup but as I said before, one man's meat will be another's poison, everyone's ideal setup will differ.

Your last comment is spot on.

It's all about what you want from the bike and what you feel comfortable with.

K-mac seems to be set up stiffer than mine so will be fantastic on fast smooth roads I assume.

Mine is a compromise between yours and K-mac's.

I like to ride fast through the twisties, but I also like my teeth and kidneys where they are :crazy

This should read 19 turns out (clockwise)

Hi Guys,

Really interesting info, especially as I'm in process of learning how to tweak my suspension.

I assume most of the above is based on Gen2 suspension. Can anyone advise how relevant the settings are too a Gen1 with the Sachs rear shock?

(Thanks in advance).
