I went up to the closest Aprilia dealer today in Raleigh, NC and they are NO LONGER going to sell aprilias due to a problem with a particular gasket that allows water to mix with oil inside the engine...apparently, this dealership is having headache after headache in getting aprilia to fix the issue (or to share the cost)...has anyone heard of this? apparently, this particular dealer has sold 3 rsvs in the last 12 months and all of them have this exact issue...CRAP!!! what is going on?
:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant:rant

hmmm, never heard of that one, bad batch of engines maybe?
share the cost part i've heard of...

yes...over a gasket...but also because of the headache that went along with this malignant gasket...here is the aprilia he was attempting to sell to me a month ago: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Apri...002QQitemZ120199602538QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
but as for any new 2008s, its not going to happen. they are not going to order any new bikes because of this issue and are dropping the aprilia line completely. He does have 3 1098 ducatis and the 848 on the floor that he quickly told me that he would give me a very good deal on...lol

Sounds a bit ott to me just because of a gasket :confused, im sure the boys over here will tell you if that is an issue but i've not heard of that one doc :huh

New one on me this, i've never heard of a persitant problem with gaskets failing and water mixing with the oil. Maybe a faulty batch?

i have to admit guys...the 1098 (and even the 848) are starting to pull on my heart strings (i can hear the booooo as i type)...my fear is that as the v-4 becomes more and more a reality as a potential street engine in the next 3-4 years that the rotax will get phased out...and in the process support will start to disapate...
i am heading up to the dealership again next week for a test drive weather permitting...

sounds like he has suckered you in a treat!
never heard of that problem with a mille
hmmmmmmm whats he got on his shop floor ducatis did you say good luck mate don't forget your bank card for the servicing .
don't fall for that old chestnut mate

You say about problems with Aprilia's I say rubbish never heard of that problem If you want problems buy a Ducati 1098,mate of mine has one and he say's it's been back to the dealers 8 times in the first year

guys i am just frustrated, that's all...to have this dream and then make weight (the goal was 185 and i am down to 182)...and then this dealer tells me that he has had issues with all 3 RSVs that he has sold...my dream was stunned...
(in the future, i now know that if someone else has a similar issue on this forum i will place my efforts to encourage them to continue the dream and not to loose heart)...i appreciate all of you who questioned what this guy was telling me as to this issue being something that you have not really heard of...you were helpful for me to pull out of my funk...
peace

Ducati ! dont swear at us doc ... but it does seem he's trying to pull you in to a ducati cos he can see a good reward in never ending repair bills .

besides opinions...has anyone ever seen any empirical evidence regarding maintenance cost comparisons between italian bikes (or on a larger scale...any bikes, for that matter)?

1) Japanese bike forum opinions - "Itialian bikes are way to expensive and not worth it...they are not as reliable and too finicky...you have the best if you go japanese"
2) Ducati forums - "if you take care of your ducati, it will take care of you...and if you do, the costs are nowhere near as high as what everyone thinks...also you have the best if you have a ducati"
3) Aprilia forums - "we are italian passion without the perceived ducati maintenance cost...also aprilias are more reliable then ducati...you have the best if you go aprilia"
4) MV Agusta - "all bikes not MV are inferior on multiple levels and our bikes are the sexiest...if you don't have a MV then you will never understand...maintenance cost? who cares - i can afford it"
5) BMW - "we build the most reliable, innovative machines on the planet period!"

you get my point...every forum i visit and study is the same...OUR BIKES ARE THE BEST...and so i re-state my initial question...is there any empirical evidence? (excluding the most important point that it is ALWAYS the rider and not the bike)

peace

Im on a Superbike forum Doc which has over 4500 members with a wide range of bikes ...Benellis..Ducati...Aprilias...and of course the main group of Jap bikes. When I was asking advice for either Aprilia or Ducati for my next bike choice the overwhelming votes went for Aprilia because of their reliability and the quality of parts for the money you pay, and because they're a great bike :thumbup. There was far too many horror stories of £1000+ servicing costs (every year  ) on Ducati's for my liking. Although the Ducatis are great bikes handling/looks etc, they were just to much of a risk for me.

If your loaded then it doesn't matter does it, you can buy what tugs your heart strings and fcuk the costs :eatcorn

Speaks for itself :yes:yes:yes, yes we are all passionate about our particular brand and sorry to hear that your worried about the aprilia's in general due to this one off problem. It does sound like a bad batch cos no one here has heard of or had the problem you speak of :confused.
Buy what your head and heart tell you doc and be happy with what you ride what ever but some how i think you will regret not experiencing the aprilia for what it really is.... a good bike that wont let you down and empty your wallet as much as a duke :thumbup.

Peace man !:yes

2) Ducati forums - "if you take care of your ducati, it will take care of you...and if you do, the costs are nowhere near as high as what everyone thinks...also you have the best if you have a ducati"

Doc, I was a very happy Ducati owner most of last year. I changed the oil religously every 3000, warmed it up before riding, took it easy for the first 5-10 miles, had it serviced regularly and STILL got landed with a £1070.00 bill for 8 out of 16 rockers that were 5hagged!

Allegedly the 749/999 series engine doesn't suffer from this and the 848/1098 should be even better logically. The latter are still very pricey at the moment though. The 848 is certainly getting rave write ups and I could be tempted in the future if it's engine doesn't have the above problems and the servicing costs are lower as Ducati state they are.

Jap bikes, everyone knows they need little care and do the job very well, but they tend to be a little souless!

MV Agusa - do you have the money to say I don't care how much it all costs?

BMW, they do build quality, reliable bikes. Never been my cup of tea but they are starting to bring out some really nice kit............ if you can afford the purchase price.

As has been said on here before, you get so much quality kit on the Aprilia as standard and they are still sold at a good price. We all tend to see a bike that our hearts totally overrule our heads on, buy it and go blind to the comments about the bikes particular faults.

Just don't sit there worrying and find yourself a couple of years later still wondering what bike to buy! :thumbup

we say here that "if everybody bought a motorbike only hearing his/her head then everybody would only run on scooters". Sure most of the people having this kind of lovely big machines got caught up with the heart setting the head aside... this is why, after owning four japan bikes I decided to try Ducati and... well, fallen deeply in love with the twins and that "different" feeling they provide both when on the road or when stopped in front of you, or even when seeing people pointing at you when riding on the street... things which didnt happen in the other bikes I've got.

Me and my wife enjoyed ourselves with the three Ducati we've got which never gave us any trouble at all. However, we felt really disappointed thinking every time on the exorbitant costs each mille you are riding on your bike (taking into account the fact that we're the kind of people who take a ride every weekned), and being very hard trying not to cry in front of the service invoice when leaving the garage after service... Ducati feelings were unfortunately too expensive to maintain...

I've just found now in Aprilia the feelling and the exclusivity I was looking for in a motorbike... with a reasonable cost (as compared to Ducati) It was the bike I've ever wanted to have with such (surprisdingly) maintenance costs, in line with the japanese bikes.

I'm very happy with my Mille.

Sergi, you summed it up wonderfully there. I have to say that the RSV hasn't quite got the 'feel' of the Ducati experince but the costs seal the deal for me.

Sprocker, scooters are great fun around town. Nippy, very cheap to run and I don't mind just doing 2 miles on the scooter!
