Stator replacement

Guys

After having my rewound stator burn out for a third time in 12 months recently I decided to opt for a genuine Aprilia replacement. After a six week wait and £250 lighter it has finally arrived! I'm thinking of installing it myself but the only thing that concerns me is a mention in the workshop manual of a special tool needed to re-fit the generator cover. Has anyone else here done the job and is this tool stictly necessary

I fitted my own.....no special tools required....just take it easy, the magnets make it a bit tricky but its easy enough

Guys.....the best thing to do also is change the rectifier to a Mosfet type.....the orignal rec is a shunt type and draws max current 100% all the time ...... mosfet type rec is new tech and does not run as hot or draw max current all the time so the stator dont get such a hard life

The Mosfet type rec (FH021AA) is found on the 07 onwards R1's and newer ZX10r.....got mine off ebay for £45 and its running superb

old type......new type

You can use push on crimps or order the plugs from http://easternbeaver.com/Main/Elec__Products/Connectors/R_R_Connectors/r_r_connectors.html

Mate, its called an allen key, real easy to get off, just undo the 10 bolts & the cover comes off.Fit a new gasket aswell(if the one on there is ok,use it)

Thanks for your update but I'm not referring to the allen headed bolts holding the cover on, I'm referring to the special tool which screws into the aperture in the middle of the cover - see pic below.

Hello mate, you don"t need to touch that, when you take the
Stator cover off, only 3 bolts hold the stator on,simples.

Change the rectifier while ya there to a newer type..(Mosfet FH012AA).... found on 07 onwards R1.....the old shunt type on the aprilia are crap ..... hence one reason why the stators burning out

info here..... http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=202735

Loads have done this and so far so good....even mine, you dont need to relocate it, I put mine in the same place as the OE one

Got round to doing the stator this afternoon.

Here's the shiny new stator ready to go on..

Putting it all back together tomorrow with no brown connectors. I'd got rid of the one by the rectifier but the second connector which is normally found in the vee between the cylinders had been routed around the rear cylinder and I couldn't get at it. Wish I'd persevered now!

Very common problem .... the brown connectors are an issue that has popped up many times, anyone reading this should bypass them ASAP AND the white connector under the tail unit with red/white and red/black wires going to them............this however WILL NOT stop the stators burning out just make them last a bit longer maybe

SO Far, the way to go is to replace the rectifier with the mosfet type.....as well as the connector bypass

This aint just an Aprilia problem either....other makes suffer the same thing

Don't forget about the other half of the circuit.
Make sure the ground (earth) wire connectors are in good shape. Better yet, replace them with heavier gauge wire...
