Happy new year to all.. :thumbup

Just a looking for some feedback..

Have a 03 RSVR (about 6 months).. Recently changed the battery and the S Valve, and all okay :thumbup

Went to start the bike after a few week in the garage,(and a cold spell) and it wouldn`t start. I think i flooded it... No problem... removed a couple of plugs, dried them out, and hey presto.... started.

Did about 80 miles, and parked it up again for a few days.

Went to start it during the week, tried to fire, but then wouldn't. Maybe flooded again. :dunno

Normally, i`d use the choke on full, without any trottle... Last time, i didn't use the choke, just winded it on a small bit (to avoid flooding). When it didn't start, i opened the choke.

Am i doing something wrong ??? Bye the way the garage isn't heated or insulated, so it would be Cold iish

Cheers to all

Dave

Hi Dave,

Firstly you wanna get yourself an Optimate if your not using your bike daily. These buggers need a battery in tip top condition to start them.

I leave mine for weeks on end sometimes on Optimate, when I come to start it I always apply full choke and no throttle, hit the starter button and she fires up every time.

PS. My shed is flipping freezing too - get yourself an Optimate before you damage your sprag clutch set up.

Aldi are doing a good charger now for 12.50, ive had one for 2 years and it's
( touch wood) never let me down.

Thanks lads...... But she's on an optimate all the time..... i always re start the cycle every time i disconnect :).... She only done 14k miles..... I`ll be getting her service in Feb anyway, and i`ll getr the plug changed... might be the problem :)

No problem at all.

Stick some Iridium plugs in it, they make a difference when starting.

Always use the full choke when starting from cold, if she doesn't fire first time then a problem may exist.

More than likely the plugs will be knackered or perhaps a HT lead has high resistance, let them know at service that you've had problems so they can check things out.

Don't suppose you have connected the test ports and checked for any fault codes?

Sounds like a plan :thumbup

When you start talking test ports etc i`m lost:dunno
I think i`ll leave it to the professionals, for my sake and the bikes :biggrin :biggrin

No probs I understand.

Suppose it's a good job not everyone wants to fix their own bikes and cars, people like me would be out of work. LOL

Just a note Dakar. under normal starting proceedure, never ever touch the throttle when starting an RSV, this is how sprag clutches will fail, especially if the battery is low or the bike is not starting correctly. Open the cold start lever fully when cold and hit the starter button. If it doesn't fire within a few seconds then there is a problem that needs sorting whether it be plugs, battery, starter solenoid etc...

Boys, i hate to be the bearer of bad thoughts etc. but I've had my 99 rsv for a little over 2 years, an the last year has been nothing but trouble. now where do i begin,

the front tyre lost all pressure while flying down the m3
the side stand switch failing and killing the engine, again while flying down the m3,
the bikes more temprimental that pavarotti's taste buds,
it dont start properly in the mornings, an especially if its rained....(typical italian you might say),
the fuel injections too tetchy,
and the bike itself dont really fill me with confidence when i'm out with the guys on a ride out!

right, now im finished, roll on 15th of january when i get my duke back!:thumbup:biggrin

I hear what your saying mate, even jap crap can be a nightmare though.

These Aprilias do like to be pampered and polished quite a bit.

A Duke on the 15th??? That could be out of the frying pan in to the fire.

mate, my duke has just been stripped, serviced, had an mot, an stuck on the dyno, so theres not a thing wrong with it. if you've seen the story i posted a while ago, its the same duke that was stolen from me 2 years ago :biggrin:thumbup

Front tyre loosing pressure ! same thing happened to me on rear, not the bikes fault but very dangerous it is caused by cheap valves bit like when you spin a bucket of water round and nothing comes out due to the centrifugal force, when your wheel is turning at rsv speeds the valve insides get sucked in and the air escapes get to a tyre dealers they will replace them for around £2 a valve.

New plugs and a 13.5amp battery last year.Always kept on a charger.Fired up every few weeks. But,like last year..prolonged cold spell and lo and behold today, she did the run for a few seconds and stall. The only way to start her is to warm/take off the battery..charge for a few hours..full throttle, crank over and away she goes!My Ducati was the same, battery voltage drops so low in sub zero..it will not crank a v twin over fast enough and give a full 12volts to the electronic ignition.Regards AL (ex tech/mech).

Thanks to all.. At least i know what the correct way to start her now. Will bring her for servicing and get it all checked. Expect it's the plugs, as the other have been changed :thumbup
