does the basket move independantly to the primary drive shaft that runs through it ?

If it does to any degree you may have basket wear/compression spring issues between the basket and the clutch drive gear. effectively the basket is damped by springs which are there to stop heavy handed clutch action from transmitting the shock to the gears. The springs and their slots can wear giving you some lash between the basket and the clutch gear.

There is no guidline as to how much play should be there just limits for the slot wear and spring lengths.

If the whole assembly moves in unison with the primary shaft/clutch gear and there is no play between the 2 then it's probably just a bit of gearbox play betwen gear teeth.

Hi Spoonz, thanks for replying :D. I'm a little confused though, the primary output shaft drives the "inner basket"? The "outer basket" presumably drives the gearbox. So the output shaft and basket should always move independently? Or am I all mixed up?

sorry i didn't explain it that well.

I assumed your clutch is now back together but what i'm trying to get at is whether the clutch basket has play between it and the clutch drive gear that sits behind it.

If the clutch is back together and you rock the back wheel can you see the shaft/basket move but there be a bit of slack before the clutch gear moves. If that is the case the movement you mentioned could be in the basket/clutch gear compression springs. If it all moves together and there is no play between the basket and gear then it's probably just free play is the gear meshing of the box.

If the clutch is apart you can try twisting the outer basket and looking for the same movement between it and clutch gear.

I think that makes sense.

Oh okay I get you! :thumbup When the clutch is all back together there's still play between it and the clutch drive gear behind the basket and the output shaft is moving with the basket. I haven't tried the back wheel thing.

If your up for another stripdown i can give you the specs for the springs and housing slots if you want to check them.

Spring wear limit is 26.75mm outer and inner and the pins that go in each end of the spring must have no more than 0.3mm wear into the surface.

The spring housing is 32.65mm

You will have to remove the oil pump drive gear to gain access and they recommend not re using it (plastic).

It's actually easy enough if you have a the clutch apart Milleboy, you'd get it easily.

Millyboy i make it sound worse than it is.

i have a knack of saying in 20 words what a more literate person would say better in 5 :dunno

we normally get there in the end.

LMAO!!! spoonz i got a mate exactly the same super detailed and super technical but he always talks in super long words bit like a doctor:laugh

Secret weapon ive always had one for a car but not found one for a bike as of yet :laugh the search goes on

Certainly cheap compared to new. but you'll make me feel guilty if it's not the problem.

Lol don't worry Spoonz, if I do buy it, I fully appreciate it's my call. The thing is I can't see what else could be causing the banging...
