Something is banging

I think I've got a real problem. When my Mille is in neutral I can feel and hear something banging/knocking inside the engine. If I click it into first the knocking disappears.

Anyone got any ideas? Gearbox?

I'm gutted, the bike's been so good for ages but now this. :(

when its in neutral does the noise stop when you hold the clutch in?

Agree with Wolf try this first mate, mine has the same probs come and goes though as soon as you let go off the clutch ya hear a knocking but once the clutch is in or in gear it goes :thumbup

yeah i have it from time to time aswell, usually killing the engine and starting again gets rid of the noise aswell :dunno

had similar to this before on my own bike and it was actually a very light misfire which was only apparant at idle as a knock felt through the foot rests as the ignition cut very quickly and then refired. If you ever ride an rsv with a serious misfire the knock sounds like carnage is going on inside but it's not. ridiing at low speed it was more of a surge on a constant throttle.

Generally the bike ran fine with no load misfire that i could detect. I replaced plugs and found an electrical connector issue and so far it seems cured but early days. will try plug caps which can be a weak spot next.
At first it felt very much like something banging or knocking and not the usual clutch chatter.

food for thought.

Ok so I've had a chance to try it. When I pull the clutch in the knocking stops. So it only happens in neutral with the clutch released...

Clutch basket? It sounds too mechanical to be a misfire I'd have thought?

never tried playing with the clutch with mine in the fault state.

It felt very mechanical though through the footrests there was a distinct clonk but it was felt more than heard.

Failing that i guess the clutch basket would be the next best guess

could be worse as it's easy enough to get too.

Get a friend to listen and see if that's the right area that the knock comes from first just in case.

price for the basket is about £80 ish but it could just be something loose.

I took my Mille over to see Fusebox (Griff) at Customrestoandrace today. He had a listen and he reckons it's just the clutch plates banging about. So, much relief on my part, I'll have the clutch apart soon and see what's going on.

What a nice chap Griff is, he obviously knows his stuff about Milles and it was a pleasure to talk bikes for 10 minutes (nice LC350 in reception too). He's balancing my throttle bodies on Wednesday. Thoroughly recommended. :thumbup

you would think there must be something amiss if the plates are banging. That sounds a bit more than the usual clutch chatter but if the clutch is working ok it can't be too drastic. Thrust bearing perhaps.

Okay I had the bike round a mates house today and we had the clutch cover off.

A couple of things:

The clutch pack inside the basket could move back and forwards a tiny bit. We didn't know if that was normal.

After we looked at that we had all the plates out and the inner basket out and we found play in the outer clutch basket. I've added a picture and a video to illustrate:

Video of the basket play

Again we didn't know if this play was meant to be there but I suspect not and I also believe that it's the cause of the banging? What do you think people?

I'm not sure how much play there should be if any at all. If Griff can't help then ring southern cross motorcycles

I would say it's OK, there needs to be some play or it would never go in gear but did you have it in gear with the back brake on/rear wheel locked :confused
