Have you checked that everything is tight up front? ie: head bearings, forks, wheel spindle.

I think your first diagnosis is probably right, it sounds like a nut loose on the handlebars!

The mechanic did ask if the front tyre was worn but it's still got plenty to go
Suppose that would be a good excuse to the wife to get a new setThe car tyre I mentioned earlier in this thread that I had trouble with, was not worn, it was new. The 'wobble' it caused was down to a fault in manufacture of the tyre that was not visible. When the tyre was changed the fault disappeared.
