Was just out for a ride this morning, doing approx 80 when i heard this almighty clatter from the gearbox and the rear wheel locked up. I dipped the clutch, tried another gear and the same happened so just held the clutch in and came to a stop.

Does anybody have any ideas of what this could be?

Supposed to be going france friday!

Its on a 2001 rsvr

Sorry bud, can't help but to a novice here it doesn't sound too good!!!!

Have you checked the basics like the chain and sprockets?

Was the engine still running or did the engine cut out?

Does the engine start and idle when in neutral now?

If you removed the chain does the rear wheel spin up OK?

As you can see mate there are a million and one things to check out before assuming the worst. Best bet is to get it looked at by a local friendly mechanic if you can't see anything obviously failed.

wouldn't be chain or sprocket coz the clutch would have made no differance if it was pulled in or not, the back wheel would have stayed locked up

Sounds like a gearbox problem mate, if it freewheeled to a stop with the clutch in, then I doubt it's the rear wheel or chain & sprockets, and from what you've said the clutch seems to be working ok too. The output shaft in the box turns with the drive spocket so is turning with the wheel regardless of whether the clutch is in or out, so maybe a primary shaft problem??? Not sounding good mate I'm afraid :(

yearp, thats fooked awright...bet it made a hell of a noise when she dropped

probably get more back for it in parts and search out a nother running bike.

Exact same happenend to a mate, how many miles? New engine for a few hundred and sorted

Ouch, sorry to see that mate. However, coming from a history of two strokes a disaster like that is not a particularly rare sight :eatcorn

Be interesting to know what caused it though, is this a common thing with these engines? Can it happen if the valve clearances are too loose, or if the motor has been over revved?

Depends what the rest of the bike is like as to the plan - personally I would track down another motor. As already said, I've seen plenty on ebay for a few hundred quid. I'd do the valve clearances etc on the new one before you fit it so you know it's good. You can also give the bike a mega clean all round the frame while it's out. An afternoon, maybe a day to swap the lumps and job's a goodun.

Good luck :thumbup

tough luck m8, plenty of engines on fleabay for about £500, it's a gamble , but I got a real good motor for my Firestorm from a breakers, done 1000mls with no problems

you will be able to sell plenty of parts off your dead motor (Clutch, starter sprag etc)

Miff

There is a guy in the midlands with one for sale, he's out of the country until the weekend, if you want to pm me your tel no I can forward it for you.

That's a sad sight mate.

This is thankfully not a common occurrence with these engines, usually happens when they are bounced off the limiter constantly. (Abused :roll)

Rotax engines are pretty damn reliable compared to most, that is as long as the maintenance and usage has been adhered to.

Speak to Mark at Time Machine Bikes, he'll have an engine or two laying around, he's a top bloke too.

Here's one he has advertised on Flea Bay - Click Me
