RSV HID Xenon Dipped Headlamp Conversion

Right, I'm back.

It's a "no go". :(

For a start, the HID bulb would not physically fit into the hole in the rear of the headlight housing. So I removed the sort of reflective "shroud" around the bulb as it was held on by 2 screws and at least then it slid into the recess fine.

However.....the white plastic locking ring that sits behind the bulb and locks it into position on the rear of the headlight unit would not fit around the back of the HID bulb. Nothing I could do about that as the bulb itself is a sort of moulded in affair into its base unit thingy.

Anyway, I decided to wire it all up the way I mentioned previously anyway thinking I might be able to DIY something to get the bulb to lock in position afterwards and lo and behold - Nae light. :banghead

So I'm guessing this is indeed some sort of Bi-Xenon type affair that has to be wired direct to a power source i.e. the battery. The other wee black box in the pics contains a 20amp fuse which the battery connections run off from.

It's defo a bike HID kit as it has pictures of a Gixxer Thou on the box and is labelled as a Bike kit but it certainly isn't for an RSV. Not sure what bike it would fit, anything with an H4 bulb that had a hole large enough in the rear of the headlight unit I imagine.

It's no biggy, I'll just stick the Osram Nightbreaker back in there and be content with it just now. Just a pity the kit wouldn't work out for the Mille - Ah well, I'll stick it on eBay as it isn't any use to me now!!.

So - Who can recommend me an HID kit to buy for the Mille that does fit properly and is easy-peasy to wire up?. Preferably one with the really small size ballast units designed in mind for bikes as this kit has a car sized one. I'm off for a butchers at eBay to see what is on offer there but in the meantime any recommendations are welcome!.

Ta. :thumbup

****EDIT**** @amb and IanG - Your kits, did you have to run two wires to connect to the battery under the seat too?. Because a lot of the kits I'm looking at on eBay show pics of a similar set up to the kit I have here ( the disnae fit one ) with a load of wiring loom gubbins that have to be connected up to the battery?. I thought it would just be a case of slim line ballast unit, plug into main headlight loom and away you go?.

Nope, my kit was just as you see in the pics,it just uses the wires that feed the original bulb. Takes about 1/2 hr to fit and most of that was figuring out where to mount the ballast and the ''black block'' thingy,................ and then taking the fairing off again as I'd forgotten to plug the harness back in.:jack

Nah, my kit was the plug and play new type mate with small ballast unit as well. My last HID kit I fitted back in 2004 was like that, had to pick up a + & - directly from the battery. :roll

Try this seller on Ebay - Click Me I know you only need one but with winter looming I'm sure you'll sell the left over ballast and burner no problems. :thumbup

These kits are a 10 minute fit job, trust me. :thumbup

Excellent, cheers amb. Didn't even think of buying a car kit and using one set of bits. A guy at work is quite happy to split the cost with me so thats that sorted.

That kit you linked to, I can't tell but do you reckon those ballasts are the small/slimline versions or the big 'uns?. I could message the seller and ask I 'spose. :thumbup

Found these slim ones mate - Click Me possibly best to email both sellers and ask them for the ballast unit dimensions an weigh up the cost difference and I suppose make sure that you have enough space to actually mount the ballast. :thumbup

I think mine was a standard sized one and I had enough room. :eatcorn

Thanks m8. Have emailed both sellers and asked.

There's plenty room behind the dash for the larger sized ballasts though so I suppose there is no real advantage of going slimline except cost of course. :)
