Rivnut Tool Loan

A

amb67

I removed my rear hugger this afternoon and every damn bolt snapped on my swingarm.

Gonna have to drill them out and fit some rivnuts, problem is I can't find my rivnut gun.

Does anyone who lives in Kent or near Croydon have one I could borrow for a few days?

Your help would be much appreciated :doug

No point in retapping them as the chances are that next time I want to take off the rear hugger I'll be drilling the buggers out again.

A mild steel threaded bolt in an aluminium casing with loads of water thrown at it daya after day = disaster.

Best to fit a stainless blind rivet and that'll be job done, shame Aprilia don't do this as standard.

RS3Mille, have you really got one or is Badboy just trying to make you look really unhelpful??

get where ya coming from matey

to be honest i've never had it happen in over 3 years, but then i regrease everytime i've taken them out

I had the same issue on my ZX6R about 7 years ago, stainless rivnuts went on that too.

Just wish I could find my bloody rivnut pliers, if I can't find it soon then it will have to be another purchase off Ebay.

are these like the rivnuts which are in the subframe for seat fixings etc?

nice one
just what i need to do to my subframe over the winter for later panels

Always Copperslip every fastner I remove on the Mille, but some plonker has snapped one of the hugger fastners in a previous life.

You've two ways of repairing it, a helicoil insert or a rivnut.

Both would be good repairs and to be honest the helicoil should be your first port of call, the reason is if that goes wrong then at least you can drill it out larger and fit the rivnut.

Try to fit stainless inserts, I know they are more expensive but it will save a lot of grief later.

Both Helicoil and rivnut kits are readily available on Ebay and they are not that expensive.

I have one that you can borrow if you want to cover the post cost. PM me if you want it, cheers Rob.

Cheers for the offer Rob, managed to find my Rivnut gun at the back of my tool cupboard.

All I need now are the inserts, ordered some off Ebay.

Gonna have a bash at inserting a 5mm Helicoil first. I don't hold out much hope as the swingarm material was crumbling whilst drilling out the broken bolts.

Thanks

Alan

I wasn't going to bother TBH, if I did ever drill it out I think I would just re-tap to the next bolt size up.

ive also taken my hugger off and every bolt snapped!!, you guys that have drilled them out, what did you use? i guess a right angled drill, you dont have to take the swing arm off do you? cheers, flash

I tried to get one out on my old Mille, and it snapped. Had it drilled out and retapped by an engineering company.

Steel bolt into Alloy swingarm = electrolytic carnage. :jack

You really need to use a barrier compound to prevent the siezure. something like Ti prep or lithium grease works really well. I did my fasteners when the bike was new anticipating a problem and they still come out every year no problem.

Shouldn't have to though should we? Any muppet, probably even Piero on assembly knows steel and ally make uneasy bedfellows.

I supported the bike on a set of axle stands and a bar through the frame so the rear wheel hung free, I removed the rear wheel and disconnected the rear shock linkages so it could drop down all the way. (Have a look on my oil cooler guard post, think you can see the way I supported it on those images)

You then have enough room to get a standard drill in. Before you drill them make sure you centre punch the remaining bolt and drill it out dead centre. Deviate from the centre and you could end up with an extremely large hole in your swing arm.

As for tapping the holes to the next size up, don't bother if it's like mine. These swing arms must be made of Swiss cheese, I tried that and the aluminium just crumbles. Best to add a helicoil or rivnut and have done with it.

Best way to seal these little buggers is to add a dab of silicone sealant to the hole before you stick the bolt back in.

As you screw in the bolt it coats and seals the threads and stops water ingress.

Works a treat, trust me.
