So getting ready for some track days, first one on the list is the Snetterton 300. Doing a few tweeks to the bike to prep for them.
Beowulf exhaust added, and wondering if it's possible to reverse the stock rear sets to make them GP style. I know it's possible on other bikes, like the GSXRs and wondering if it's possible on the 2008 Aprilia RSV-R. If so do i have to buy a new bar for the shifter or do i just have to reverse something on it like you do with the GSX-Rs? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as right now i don't have the cash to buy new rear sets, although it is on the list.
Did some searching and didn't see any posts like this on the forums, if I missed a post on this, sorry for the duplicate post.

Since it is my first time posting on here since i joined figure i should throw up some pics of the bike. Here they are

Hi ZipTie,

My cut on this is 'no', it's not possible simply to reverse the shifter, but you may be interested in my adaptation - which is adapted from a Falco shifter. (The Falco shifts in the opposite direction to the RSV, so using the linkage on the RSV gives you reverse shift - if you know what I mean.)

Here're the donor Falco bits:

I picked up a spare OEM-RSVR footrest and adapted it to take the Falco peg. I had to use a longer bolt to mount this on the RSVR footrest, but the only other thing I had to do was shorten the link rod. Total cost for the RSV footrest and the Falco bracket from fleabay was £88.

As my RSV already had a compression Quickshifter, I decided the easiest and cheapest solution would be to make a bracket so that it still compresses. (BTW: The Quickshifter has a convenient little led on the side of the sensor to show when it triggers!)

Here's my solution:

It's possible to do it with simple workshop equipment (hacksaw, file, emery cloth), with the possible exception of the locator slots for the Falco footpeg, which have two prongs that locate into slots in the bracket. I used a Dremel engraver to make these.

Two things that are not ideal, but I can tolerate:
  1. The left footpeg is now a couple of centimetres further out (the width of the pedal), but I don't see that as an issue on clockwise (mainly right-handers) UK circuits.

  2. The fairing hanger bracket (the black bit that fits on the back of the footrest) wants to occupy the same space as the link rod's rear joint. Although I've tried reversing one of the rod joints and even inverting the whole linkage, I can't find a solution to this, so I'm going to take the Dremel to my fairing as highlighted in pic #2.

One of the main reasons cited for putting custom rearsets on the RSVR is to re-site the rear brake master cylinder. FWIW, I've not had any problems with my rear brake (but then again, I never use it); it goes out firm and comes back firm (so to speak). What's more, the position of the standard footpegs is just fine for me and I have no grounding issues.

BRG,

Thanks a ton for the help. I'll look into that, can't do it at work as the military doesn't let me access sites such as ebay, amazon, and what not. I'll look the parts up when i get home and see what i can come up with. After looking at the stock rear set i figured it wasn't going to be as easy as reversing something on it like you can with the GSXRs. But the idea i had in my head was roughly in the same ball park as what you posted.

"The left footpeg is now a couple of centimetres further out (the width of the pedal), but I don't see that as an issue on clockwise (mainly right-handers) UK circuits." With that being said, for right left handers would i have a problem with the foot rest making contact with the ground or is there still clearance enough that that will not be an issue?
Again, thanks for the help!

On right-handers, with the ball of my foot on the peg, I touch my knee down almost always, my foot occassionally and the peg only if I hit a mid-apex bump. On left handers, I sometimes touch my knee down (Cascades at Oulton is wonderful for this), but seldom touch either my foot or my peg (in my portfolio, there're only really Donington GP and Oulton with a good mix of left-handers. At my local Castle Combe, there are so few left-handers, that that side of the tyre is always cool and not worth a chance!). BTW, I've removed the 'hero blobs' from my footrests.

In any case, as the peg is hinged/spring loaded, it will bend up if it scrapes :)

Here are some pics (no decent shots of left-handers, I'm afraid):

Does anyone know if a Beowulf exhaust will pass the noise regs for a track day? There is one on my bike when I bought it, it still has the baffle in it.

When i bought it i asked the guy what the decibals ran. He said if you run with baffels in you should be good for trackdays. I think he said they run about 102-104 with baffels in. I haven't had a chance to do a track day yet with them on yet, but if i do i'll let you know what i ran at.

It's not as bad as I first thought...

I've just measured up and the reverse shift peg is only and additional 10mm further out.

Just found a set of rear sets on fleabay. Says they were from a 2004 RSV and i got a 2008 RSV. Pretty sure they should work. If not let me know quick as i'm highest bidder!

I had a look on fleabay, but couldn't see any 'Aprilia rearsets' or 'RSV Rearsets' that were under the hammer - only 'buy now' stuff. Please post a pic if/when you get them.

Just had mine out at Castle Combe. Reverse shifter worked flawlessly and is ergonomically easier to shift (and select neutral - if you need that feature!) Feels to make up-shifts quicker, though I suspect that's only because the pedal pressure is less as a result of having a slightly longer gear pedal.

It's one of those things, like a quickshifter or a slipper clutch, where before you've got one, you can't imagine how to ride it, but once you've ridden it, you can't imagine how you ever rode without it.

Unfortunately i lost out on the bid.... Not much of an ebay guy. Thought i had it until i refreshed and saw 2 bids in the last 3 secs...... So now i'm back to looking for the Falco shifter like you have. Sounds like it works well for you so might as well try. Only thing i'm worried about is the length difference but you say it's worked and i'm no pro so the bike shouldn't get that far over :). So back to square one. Sucks too, it was a Gille's Rearset going for 150 quid. Looked on the states side ebay they're going for 500+ USD. It'll be awhile before another set goes that cheap :(
