Reservoir socks

Not a new Quenten Tarentino film, but the ones sliped over brake and clutch reseviors.
A friend asked me the other day while they look cool, what do they do or what are they for.
After a few mins battering ideas back and forth we gave up and admited we didn't know.
But I vowed I'd find out. So what is the purpose of the socks?

If you own an rsv an not used your brakes so hard that fluid comes out the resovoir your are not trying hard enough..honest it happens

'Tis true. And then it blows back onto your tank and fairing paint, not good.

Is it just fluid expansion due to heat build up that causes it to escape?

No I think it's the **** quality OEM cap they fit, all the paint pickled off mine so I fitted a billet one & it's been fine ever since :dunno

I had brake fluid all over the dash.....changed lids now to Oberon ones....but still got my sock on

I always like to know if I still have break fluid in the system, would not be at ease hiding the level....:jack
