On my rear shock between the threaded collars and the top of the shock in the mannual it says max 25mm the guy before me has put it at 34mm see photo

Should i wind it back to 25mm max or should i just say **** it and get on with riding it.

you should set it for your weight which is what the adjustment is for.

Obviously the original owner was a Bart fastard :eatcorn

Tim, as Spoonz says its for preload, and that should be set to around 25mm rider sag (i.e. measure from axel to seat point somewhere when you're off the bike with no load and then sit on the bike and measure same oints again and that should be 25mm as standard)

deacs :thumbup

Cheers Colin/Clyde

I need to sit down and sort this suspension out.

Ill try and do it tonight.

Right lads I ve taken the following measurements

Rear Front
Bike no weight 51cm 13cm
Bike own weight 47cm 10cm
Bike with me 45 10

Whilst bouncing the front to settle i felt that the forks didnt slide progressivley more of a snatchy feeling, the forks where redone about 5000 miles ago.

okay so:

Rear static sag 470mm - rider sag 450mm = 20mm thats ballpark
front seems iffy but I'll need to try and remember the sag for the front - with age comes a dodgy memory ;)

You sure:confused, rear unloaded 510mm less 470mm gives static sag of 40mm on rear, should be 10-13mm

front seems fine at 130mm unloaded less 100mm giving 30mm of static which is on the soft side but still OK, but how come the front has not moved with you on it as it is still at 100mm:confused

You on the Pino Grigio :biggrin

I used an Abba stand contraption to lift the rear wheel clear from the deck. and it read 510mm i then took the bike off the stand and stood it upright on its own and it read 470mm. So i sat on it and the measurment was 450mm

I cant seem to understand the front either what would make the front compress under weight then?

I dont understand any of this suspension **** lol.

When i was doing WSBK i had my mechanics tweak it :eatcorn :doug

looking at the preload on the spring i would say you would not have much static sag at all, surely it ain't sagged 2 1/2 inches with rider sag:confused

How are you going about taking these measurements mate:exclamation

With the wheel in the air and my weight on it 60mm difference.

I took the measurement from my paddock bobbin and the bungee hook under the rear cowl

Perhaps ill take a few piccies of how I do it.

ps Wish Griff was ere.

I had same problem, mine was wound fully down when I bought it, was rock hard, read manual and said 25mm max or rebound damping would be useless?? wound it back to 25mm and it was soft as *****, can't remember measurements but was far too much sag.

griff had a play and helped me understand it all a bit better, but still had to wind it down more than 25mm.

Rear rider sag should be about 30mm mate not 60mm, not sure what you are doing, i can't imagine your shock being that knackered, it could have lost loads of damping but the spring wont be weaker.

BTW are you doing this with cold suspension?

Standard springs on these shocks are pretty weak. Not built for your average rider. I fitted a heavier spring which made mucho difference.

Yep shock is cold

My rear is off the ground!!! and my arse is on the bike in a rossi racing style posistion.

Are they all like this????????

Just retaken the measurements of the bike without weight on it and its 484 mm WTF.

I adjusted last night the screw on the bottom of the shock as it was at 15 turns out and standard is 7 I also set the red knob at the top to 12 turns out again standard settings.

The front seems very hard, when i get on it it hardly moves.

I take it you were not happy with the handling, it might be an idea to take it to someone that knows their suspension if you ain't happy, a bike should not change its sag by 14mm overnight, i would give you a hand but you will need to ride it to Scotland bud:doug

Cheers Lads

I cant seem to undererstand it either unless i have a sticking suspension linkage

OR

My fondness of red wine and beer played havoc with the measuring.

So badge with the updated figures does this seem right?

Is the updated figure 14mm less static sag on the rear? if so you still have 26mm of rear sag according to your first figures, it should be 10-13mm really.

The linkage bearings could be causing things to stick if they were pretty bad, might be an idea to check them for their condition.

Or, lay of the booze:eatcorn

484MM rear wheel off floor
470mm bike under its own weight
450mm with my arse on it.

Thing is im not a fat fooker 12stoneish

That gives you 14mm of static and 20mm of rider, that is pretty close mate, you must deffo been pished the first time:biggrin

Actaully it gives 14mm static and 34 rider. Rider sag includes static.
Who's pished ? :biggrin

close but maybe a few mm too much imo but i would say the spring is the right one for your weight.
